IF you encounter a couple of dozen soldiers on a trek around lost city...the leader of which wears a mask & sports a screaming eagle patch...would they be farc or regulars

Maybe it was a screaming condor.

Seriously, the 4th Brigade of the 7th Division of the Ejercito Nacional have a black and white condor on a blue background worn on both shoulders. Also, the Brigade de Aviacion actually have an eagles head, pretty similar to the US Airborne insignia.
Don´t know why they´d be wearing masks though.
What other items of uniform, equiment were they wearing/carrying? There are military personnel from NATO countries, mainly the US and the UK, who are attached to Colombian units for training purposes etc.

Leave the big stick at home...carry a cannon!

If you meet again try this:(Brother-in-law said britabroad is likely correct)

¡Me encanta su uniforme y sus ametralladoras están limpias!
I love your uniforms and your automatic weapons are very clean.

If all else fails try this:

Pueden llevarse a nuestras mujeres, pero dejen nuestros boletos de avión.
You can have our women, but leave the plane tickets.

I would bet they were the ley. I've seen many times the antinarcoticos wearing mask on the road from Santa Marta to the Guajira.

Durito, the paras do not control all the Sierra. I do believe they are in control of just the first part of the trek, near Buritaca. Up in the mountain, it is farcland.

The Sierra is full of army right now, after the intervention of the big fishes of the government to go for the Mellizos and Los Nevados.
By the words of the ministry of defence Santos, La Sierra Nevada is being taken as example of the "seguridad democratica" of Colombia for 2008.
Have a look at "La Sierra Nevada, ejemplo de la seguridad democrática "

But then, it was 2004, so, I don't know.

..probably still don't...ignored advice to get a guide in tayrona later on & got a little concerned late in the afternoon & a little lost...

..saw other soldiers along the way who only waved...these guys were different...they gave me cause for concern at the beginning...but that vanished with first laugh i managed to get out of them.
