"White"Colombians and costenos and racism.

Why do colombians treat each other like sh..t even when they're far away from home? I'm sick of seeing my costeno husband being rejected subtely or otherwise by Colombians in the country we are living in,but I think I know why...he is dark skinned and they're all fair. They can't be bothered to pass the time of day with him.Really mean and small minded. They should be reaching out to their fellow countrymen particularly as the Colombian population is so small out here.

I hated the racism in Colombia when I lived there.I hate it even more now I don't.Incidentaly the locals here don't give him this treatment...just other Colombians.Just who do they think they are?

Nothatsure-

Do a search on this on PBH. The threads are endless. What you'll find is a lot of, "it's more classism than racism" crap from the crowd here. The shit transcends reality.

I see these geeky wannabe Colombian skinheads around in Bogota, and truly must laugh in their faces. I mean swastikas in Bogota??? Talk about in need of a reality check???

On a brighter note, I do find it funny when those same discriminant folks go abroad to the USA and are immediately mistaken for Mexicans, or to Spain, where they get their true comeuppance. It ain't right, but karma's a bitch.

Here here toneloc24.
When you live with someone being treated this way you really feel it.I wonder how many people posting on here experience the colombian brand of racism first hand.I experience it second hand through my hubby and that's bad enough.
I'm glad that some get their comeuppance...they deserve to!

ietk says on Apr 14, 2008, 12:45:

The problem in Colombia is not only racism there is some we do not deny that but the main problem there lies in the social status of the person in question, I am from Barranquilla and something that I hate about Barranquilleros is when you meet a person from Barranquilla the first question to come out from their mouth is most likely "Y que apellido tu eres?" and the second one "Y en que barrio vives?" I hate that, is like if you do not have a known last name or live in an upper class barrio you belong to a different sector of society.

Mononoke28 says on Apr 14, 2008, 12:47:

See, I'm with you with the whole racism issue since I also believe that it's wrong and it shouldn't exist. BUT what gets to me is that you're pin pointing only Colombians as being the racists ones. Isn't that a form of judging others? Racism is everywhere in the world. The southern states of the US for example are inundated with these kind of attitudes, South Africa, England, Spain is beyond repair, even countries within Africa have to live with who is darker and who's lighter, same with African-Americans here in the States.

So you do have a valid point, but as soon as you pidgeon hole Colombians as racists, your point loses all validity.

English,American,Canadian,Australian all make him welcome..they are more open minded.De pronto says racism isn't about naionality but about small minded people.Well I'm sorry but there sure are a lot of small minded Colombians around. They should be ashamed of themselves.

romy says on Apr 14, 2008, 13:01:

Mononoke-just because racism exists in other places, doesn't mean you can't discuss racism in Colombia in a Colombia-based forum.

Racism is rampant in Colombia. I've been told stories that my grand-mother wouldn't let her kids play with the 'coloured' kids. And they were a poor family by all means.

I'll agree with Lauthra though. I don't have too many Colombian (or latino) friends and it hasn't had to do anything with race, more with having different interests and social networks.

nothatsure says on Apr 14, 2008, 13:03:

I have actually taken lifts with Colombian 'friends"who have insisted that my hubby sit in the back and not the front of the car,I have been invited into a house in Barranquilla and my husband expected to wait outside...I waited outside with him,and on one occasion he was not allowed into a hotel in Cartegena. We have arrived at one or two hotels in this same city to find that the room we booked over the phone is mysteriously no longer available. The whole thing makes me want to throw up.

dwr says on Apr 14, 2008, 13:07:

Let me pose this question. I know that many people on this site are Colombians living outside of Colombia so I may get shit. But, is it possible that Colombians become "stuck up" when they live outside of Colombia? I haven't put much thought into it but it has crossed my mind on occasions. Colombians in Colombia might be a better people than those who have made the great escape. Bring on the criticism.

Frank Rizzo says on Apr 14, 2008, 13:09:

Frank- I was just giving my 'personal manifestation', but I agree as I have seen it. However, maybe not as bad as "don't play with them" kind of attitude or some of the things nothatsure has mentioned.

dwr- that's probably a whole other discussion. I don't know how my attitude has changed because in my mind my roots are still in Colombia and I'm here merely to get an education. But I would say that the reality for a lot of Colombians that go abroad, is that they start making money at levels they never had before in their lives. And of course their social circles in Colombia more often than not would not have experienced such prosperity. So there is going to be a certain clash when they see eachother again.

The author of the original posting implies that her husband is somehow victimized by his fellow Colombians because of his racial or ethnic background and is therefore ignored by them. But let me ask you: (1) Why should your husband be a charity case that needs to be welcomed, entertained, and treated with kid gloves just because of his nationality?; and, (2) How may your husband contribute to his being ignored by fellow Colombians? Is he boring... loud... uneducated... arrogant... interested only in one or two activities? I think this issue goes much deeper than your assumption that this has to do with skin color only. Mis dos centavos... Gracias.

I was brought up in the US and saw a lot of this behavior not only towards me, the Colombian, but towards my other Latino and African-American friends. And I'm not here bitching about how I've been treated. We also lived in a very small town called Ellenville, NY and the racism was palpable. I shrugged it off and moved somewhere else.

I agree Colombians are very racist and classist, but it also doesn't mean that you have to hang out with someone in the exterior just because you are both Colombian, but might not have anything else in common. BTW, racism in Colombia is couched in paternalism, and it is not overt hate against blacks as you might see with the KKK, but rather, it manifests itself more as discrimination. Colombians will say, I have nothing against "los negritos", but have one try to date their daughters and even the most liberal Colombian will have a coniption fit.

I'm also suspicious that this may not be simply a case of racism, but we really don't have any way of knowing, we have no real data, just one person's opinion.

From what I've seen in Bogota, if you're a fucking costeño de mierda you're a fucking costeño de mierda. I've seen it happen to a costeño friend of mine who is as blond as I am. Hell, in Bogota there are SO many levels on which people can and do snub each other, race is just another drop in the bucket, really.

If you turn on the TV and watch CSPAN and then watch its Colombian equivalent, I GUARANTEE you will see a lot more variation in skin color, age and a LOT more females in the Colombian version.

Of course I'm not expecting him to be a charity case...don't be stupid doktordemente.I'm just upset that his fellow compatriots can't even say hi to him in passing if they see us in the supermarket rather than walking down the other isle and pretending they haven't seen us at all.Obviously not all people share the same interests and it doesn't follow that all people of the same country will be best buddies but common good manners surely? I don't want to be best mates with my compatriots either but I ackowledge them if I see them out,I accept invitations to things and return the compliment at a later date. We're all in this together when we work in countries other than our own so what's wrong with being nice to one another. The lack of good manners and education,as far as I'm concerned comes from people who think they're too good to offer common courtesy to someone who think is beneath them.

What I see is that many Colombians who are "nothing" in Colombia suddenly come to Live abroad and they suddenly think their status in Colombian went 5 times higher, they go back to Colombia with this air of superiority .and speaking Spanglish........

I see this all the time! What ticks me off is when they barely speak English right and they are showing off!!

I remember the first time I went back to Colombia- I was 18 and traveling alone. When it was time to get my luggage, no one told me to get a maletero...que pasa? I was getting my luggage and by accident I hit a lady with my big hips...right away I said to her,
"disculpa senora, que pena fue sin querer."
Do you know what she answered me???

"Beeitchh!"
She couldn't even say bitch right, so I answered in English and said, "if you are going to try and insult me, learn english properly." She rolled her eyes, and had no idea what I said so I I said it in Spanish, y que no se olvide que al fin del dia somos colombianos antes que todo!

I have a friend who's mother lives en los Alamos en Pereira, she has the best of the best in Pereira- una de las damas de sociedad there...guess what she does for a few months every year in the states when everyone thinks she is visiting her successful son in NY? She cleans houses, but goes back to Pereira being la reina de Pereira!

No me gusta cuando la gente se tiran a mas, like Kat mentioned with what estrado they are from..so true! I have no shame in telling people that my mother's family is poor, pero pobres humildes, gente con respeto, dignida, valores, y bueno corazones...

Humans Blow! Every country on this planet has bias, bigotry and predjudice and always has. Too many human beings murder, oppress, rape, pillar, abuse, pollute and overpopulate; are motivated by greed, jeasousy and dishonesty. Its not an aberration limited to one country, ethnic group, sex, religion or age group.

There is a small percentage, less than 20%, of homo sapiens on this planet who are genuine, honest, special spirits. The reason a geniune, sweet, loving person without predjudice (like Kat1 for example) stands out so much is because on average...humans blow!

If it were not for our art, music and ability to love, we would be the shit stain of the universe.

And near the worst are those who want to point the finger, place blame on a narrow segment of other humans using anecdotes, statistics or conjecture; instead of recognizing the universal truth of the overall moral and ethical weaknesses of mankind.

Those who choose to cast suspicion, instead of working to uplift the stature of their fellow man/woman. They always perceive and position themselves as the 'good guys', the 'plain dealers' and 'those others' are always the problem. "Oh, if we could just have a world without those (substitute any race, religion or culture here you see fit), we'd be alright."

It never, ever changes. Humans blow!

Okay, I spelled his name wrong. Buchanan. And by the way, YOU spelled it wrong too.

Point is, you quote HIM to make a point? Has anyone ever, ever, ever applied the term "great speech" in the same conversation as Richard Nixon??? No. You moronically believe Buchanan's somehow "special" because of this.

Keep trying.

at Notthatsure - your husband has his issues with his countrymen. Unfortunately, WE still have these kinds of closeted idiots amongst us. Sometimes it's better when people DON'T speak to you. The grass isn't always greener. Racism is still very alive and well. Only difference between now and then, is that now we fight back. And folks like Mark Anthony are bitter about it. Now since folks like Mark Anthony are determined to tear down Rev. Wright, I think they need to consider what he has already done for the USA. You quote Pat Buchanan? I present a brief bio of Rev. Wright. I'd put this background up against Dubya, Cheney, Buchanan, Hannity, O'Reilly, Hume, whoever. I think he's EARNED the right to freedom of speech. Affirmative action my ass.

"From 1959 to 1961, Wright attended Virginia Union University, in Richmond. Inspired by President John F. Kennedy's 1961 challenge to "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country," Wright gave up his student deferment, left college and joined the United States Marine Corps and became part of the 2nd Marine Division with the rank of private first class.

In 1963, after two years of service, Wright then transferred to the United States Navy and entered the Corpsman School at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, where he graduated as valedictorian. Having excelled in corpsman school, Wright was then trained as a cardiopulmonary technician at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland where he graduated as salutatorian.

Wright was assigned as part of the medical team charged with care of President Lyndon B. Johnson (see photo of Wright caring for Johnson after his 1966 surgery). Before leaving the position in 1967, the White House awarded Wright three letters of commendation.

In 1967 Wright enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1968 and a master’s degree in English in 1969. He also earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School. Wright holds a Doctor of Ministry degree (1990) from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, where he studied under Samuel DeWitt Proctor."

How about this? ONLY in parts of sub-Saharan Africa have human beings been farming the land for a good ten thousand years WITHOUT managing to deplete the soil! Everywhere else we farm in a non-sustainable manner and eventually wind up with famine. Most of the Middle East and the Horn of Africa was lush and green in ancient times, and now it's DESERT!

And i ASSURE you if the New York Pig Department and other occupying armies of legalized street gangs in this country enforced the laws equally there'd barely be a black person in jail at all, or more than half the country would be incarcerated!

What's the point in looking at human beings in racial terms anyways? We are INDIVIDUALS, answerable to each other and to the law as such. Hell, most of us have no fucking clue what really is in there in our DNA anyways.

Hey everybody, let's give Mark a hand, he likes asians (How about North Korea, do you love everything about their culture?). Maybe Mark here is actually demonstrating that ignorant/hateful people are becoming slightly more in touch with reality. I mean 50 years ago Mark would have never used the term asian, but I am sure we can think of a few words that would have been flying off his tongue. Granted it has taken years and years for such a miniscule transformation, but maybe it is something. Or does he simply like Sony TVs and sweet and sour pork?

I really enjoy how you are calling on people to open their minds and listen to you...you are one funny guy. I sincerely pray that you change your mind about Colombia.

I've already said this SEVERAL times, but it is VERY apparent that MarkAnthony is a bigot, and now I am also beginning to suspect that he is a condescending, ignorant racist.

Just read his comments on how he rails against the the fact that a hip-hop artist acknowledged the beauty of Medellin
http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/kanye-west-digs-medellin/
at his thoughts on Hip-Hop music "I guess I can take a stick and beat it on a garbage can and you can call it art if you want."
at anyone that listens to Hip-Hop: "And anyone that would listen to that trash is way beyond ignorant. Actually uncivilized is a better discription"
at how he thinks that hip-hop is the cause of this country's collapse "And 99 percent of the noise is just flat out ignorant. However, not when yo don't kow any better and were brought up with it. It is all you know whioch is sad and which is why the country is collapsing."

and on and on...

I'm very close to putting him on ignore, but not until I've exposed his disgusting perspectives for all to see.

They said I couldn't play football I was too small / They say I couldn't play basketball I wasn't tall / They say I couldn't play baseball at all / And now everyday of my life I ball.
