Which visa for my child?

i know i have posted before, something similiar to this. I am moving to Bogota with my son, I dont know if im going to have a teaching job before i get there or look for one after i get there. What visa specifically should i get for my son and i and are there any requierments on bringing him over there? thank you

You would apply for the same type of visa(strange but true) as for you. You may request the same visa for your son, provided he is financially dependant on you. I assume you will have a visa before entering Colombia and will NOT be entering on your passports as tourists. I would also have a certified copy of a birth certificate issued by a city, county or state and which has a raised seal; If you have have legal custody of the child, carry the original or a court-certified copy of the court order granting you full custody or guardianship of the child. Get certified copies of all school records, medical records,. etc. etc. and bring them with you. If you later find a job you will have to apply7 for the work visa at MRE in north Bogotá

To prevent problems make sure you have written permission from his father-should look similar to this:

I (we) authorize the minor child _________________________________________________________ with passport or drivers

license number ________________________ issued by ______________ on ____ / ____ / ____

and being born in ______________________________ on ____ / ____ / ____ to travel on any

occasion to and within the territory of _____________________________________

as well as to return to the country of residence, unaccompanied or under the responsibility of

_____________________________________of ______________________ nationality and

residing at _______________________________________________________________________

with passport or drivers license number _____________________ issued by _________________

on ____ / ____ / ____ and being born in _____________________________ on ____ / ____ / ____

and being the legal or birth ___________________________________________ of the minor

child.

Signed ___________________________ on ____ / ____ / ____

Hi Gator, so what you are saying is definitely get the tourist visa before entering into Colombia. I will do that then and also get this paper filled out, if possible. The thing is, its a bit of a sticky situation. The father and i never talk. Basically, he has never seen is child since he was born and he is almost 5 now. Probably the best thing i could do like you said, is get the paper filled out showing i have full custody and rights over him, if i cannot get the father to fill out this form. How long does it take to get approved for a tourist visa?

Why a tourist visa? If you don't have an issued visa from the Colombian Consulate then enter on the US Passport then adjust status with MRE when and if you get the position.

Just filling out a paper would not handle the situation. You must get a certified copy from the court of the court reflecting sole custody.

BTW, do you have a passport for the child yet? All children regardless of age (including newborns and infants) must have his/her own passport. For a child under age 16. Both parents must appear together and sign if only one parent appears then you must submit from the second parent a notarized statement of consent authorizing passport issuance for the child. If not then you must have a Court order specifically permitting applying parent to travel with the child or have a Court order granting sole custody to the applying parent. If all that fails go on line and look at Form DS-3053 Statement of Consent or Special Circumstances: Issuance of a Passport to a Minor Under Age 16.
