Which music is closest to a Colombians heart?

Last Saturday morning I put on some Vallenato full blast to cheer up my husband (we are in the UK) only to be told to turn it off as he couldn't listen to this music anymore (makes him too homesick). Salsa or reggaeton is OK but not Vallenato. Anyone else experienced this reaction? Is it mainly Vallenato that triggers the emotions with Colombians abroad? I now listen to it in the car...

Vallenato is "mucho sentimiento" not just music you dance to... this coming from someone not particularly fond of vallenato, but still I can recognize that it is the musical genre that most identifies colombians and that strikes chords really deep when far away. Not to mention that most vallenato hits are full of melloncolly (sp) with themes such as heartbreak and nostalgia. Listen to the lyrics of "Los Caminos de la Vida" and it's enough to make you wanna jump off a cliff. There are exceptions though, you could try some of those faster and cheerier songs from artists like Joe Arroyo, Carlos Vives or Kaleth Morales.

No song jerks the tears out of a transplated cachaco(a)'s eyes in a cold northern winter like Soy Colombiano by Rafael Godoy. If he is really depressed, listening to this song might cause him to overdose on aguardiente. I remember playing that on my car stereo for my dad (shortly after his visit to colombia), he stared out the window and asked me to turn it off.

For costeños, there is a more upbeat version by Lisandro Mesa, with paso doble-like accordion solos. I highly recommend that version!

SOY COLOMBIANO

Rafael Godoy

A mi deme un aguardiente,

un aguardiente de caña,

de las cañas de mis valles

y el anís de mis montañas;

No me dé trago extranjero

que es caro y no sabe bueno

y porque yo quiero siempre

lo de mi patria primero.

Ay, que orgulloso me siento

de haber nacido en mi pueblo.

A mi cánteme un bambuco,

de esos que llegan al alma,

cantos que ya me alegraban

cuando apenas decía mamá.

Lo demás será bonito,

pero el corazón no salta,

como cuando a mi me cantan

una canción colombiana.

Ay, que orgulloso me siento

de haber nacido en mi patria.

Y para mi una muchacha,

aperladita morena.

Una rubia de ojos claros,

de suave piel montañera.

Muchacha, música y trago

de la sierra y de mi llano.

Ay, qué orgulloso me siento

de ser un buen colombiano. (bis)

(Rafael Godoy)

it depends on the age and the region. For some people it could be the bambucos and guabinas as sang by Garzón y Collazos, Silva y Villalba, for some others vallenatos...but the one common denominator for all Colombian tearjerking music in exilio is spelled c-u-m-b-i-a...

For me and my people it'd be Grupo Niche, Leonor Gonzalez Mina with her immortal interpretation of "Navidad Negra" (En la playa blanca de arena caliente hay rumor de cumbia y olor a aguardiente...), "Mi Buenaventura" and the hauntingly beautiful Colombian blues from the Pacific Coast: "La Mina" (aunque mi amo me mate a esa mina no voy no quiero morir en un socavón...)

I've known Colombian machos cry like babies listening to tangos, rancheras and....now that Christmas and New Year are coming, "Cinco Pa las Doce" and Historia de Navidad de los Hermanos Lebron.

Colombiche, is that a vallenato song? I don't know. So, please answer for me.

A very good Colombian friend living here in the states made a cd of vallenato music for me, and I listen to it in the office, almost every day. I don't understand exactly all the words, just yet, so mostly just the melodies and tunes; it is some of the happiest music I have ever listened to. Conversely, soy gringo blanco, and it puts me in a very good mood :)

Not Vallenato This particular song that I quoted belongs to a colombian genre known as guasca or carrilera. I don't have any time to do any research right now, but I will tell you what I know about it. This music, I belive, inherent to the paisa region. A lot of it sounds sort of like a small colombian town ranchera (uses a lot of the same instruments). These songs generally tell the tale of heartbreak in a very tragic, almost humourous way. For example, the song I posted above, is a woman who talks about murdering her husband by cutting off his belly button with a razorblade and then killing his mom (don't mess with paisas alright!).

This kind of music is looked upon with disdain by the upper colombian classes (musica de cantina), I bet some of the more illustrous colombianos here think I am a guisa because I know about the subject LOL. Here is a dirty little secret: even the most seasoned estrato 7 colombians take guilty pleasure in listening to one or two of these tunes when they are broken hearted and drunk.

The best know performers of this genre are Dario Gomez, Hermanitas Calle, John Jairo Perez and El Manicomio de Vargas Vil.

As you can see, it's a slow day in Kanader today.

All-time favorite song MARTA LA REINA

Una vez me quedé
Muy dormido en la playa
Y así yo soñé
Que del cielo bajaba
Un enjambre de estrellas
Y la luna plateada
Y las olas del mar
Con su luz salpicaba
Sobre el mar divisé
Divisé una cumbiamba
Que al sonar de tambores
Sobre el agua giraba
Las parejas de estrellas
Con estremas llevaban
Carrusel de colores
Parecía una cumbiamba
Y de pronto surgió
Una reina estrellada
Era Marta la Reina
Que en mi mente sonaba
A sus pies vi la luna
Las estrellas las aguas
Y un himno de fiesta
Las palmeras cantaban
Era Marta la Reina
Que en mi mente sonaba
Carrusel de colores
Parecía la cumbiamba
Y de pronto surgió
Una reina estrellada
Era Marta la Reina
Que en mi mente sonaba
A sus pies vi la luna
Las estrellas las aguas
Y un himno de fiesta
Las palmeras cantaban
Era Marta la Reina
Que en mi mente sonaba
Carrusel de colores
Parecía la cumbiamba
Parecía la cumbiamba
Parecía la cumbiamba

Who was Rafel Mejia? RAFAEL MEJÃ?A

“Mientras me quieras tu:

one that gets me, and i'm not even colombian... it's a song that my wife asked them to play, the first time we danced together. it's a vallenato called cuando vuelvas by binomio de oro.

Aunque vuelvas pronto tu
no es lo mismo si no estás
solo a ti te quiero

Por ti mi amor, por ti es que vivo yo
y hasta que quieras por ti viviré
sabes que tengo un solo corazón
mi amor te quiero y siempre te amaré

Cuando vuelvas
yo te voy a regalar mil besos
una lluvia de ternura tengo
con la que tu te bañarás

Y cuando escampe
y se vaya apróximando el frío
yo seré tu sol seré tu abrigo
mi respiro tu serás

Di que ganas tu con demostrarme
que el tiempo pasa dándole su tiempo
dime, dime como hacer para esperarte
o escríbeme anunciando tu regreso

All music does the job. I have to admit, I like monpirri's video. Oddly enough, cruising around You Tube a week or so ago, I heard this video.

Here is my take on the whole thing. I am not a big fan of vallenatos. If I lived in Colombia, I would probably would go out of my way NOT to listen to it. On the other hand, being here, anything that reminds me of Colombia, kind of raises my emotions. Therefore, while I don't particularly admire vallenatos, it has its place. So in the end, I think all Colombian music stirs the emotions.

However, as I have said many times, when it comes to Salsa, most of the good stuff is Puerto Rican, so I cannot in any way associate that music with Colombia, since we are only talking about a handful of groups that can be counted by less than all the fingers on my hand, that made any contribution anyway. Or to put it another way, it is impossible to have a CD collection as large as mine, and say that any major portion of it consists of Colombian artists.

Monpirri.......I'll be happy to listen/watch more Honestly, I'm "coming around" to vallenatos. I would never deny that a lot of vallenatos is more like a story, or a commentary on a certain condition/situation. I guess that is good. But I have never been one to listen to music for the value of its lyrics. To me, it is strictly rythym, and instumentals.

I'll say this monpirii, and you sure would be proud of me. Only two days ago, a Mexican guy here told me that he liked the "sonido" of Colombian Cumbia better than Mexican cumbia. Well, you know me when it comes to my opinion on things. I told him, in spite of my Colombian heritage, I really get "irked" when I hear Mexican cumbia, because it is such a distortion from the real thing, that I almost hate for them to call it cumbia period. This is especially true when I would hear them play and sing songs that were clearly Colombian classics...like: Like Pollera Colora, He agreed. So he asked me if I had any CDs for him to burn...because he wanted the classic stuff.

Anyway, I burned a few discs for him and he was in "7th heaven". I could not believe how this Mexican guy, who is inundated with music that they call cumbia, would react in such an enthusiastic manner.
