Which country has a higher crime rate? Saint Vincent and the Grenadines or Colombia?

They actually have the same crime rate. Colombia does not look so bad anymore in comparison to some neighboring countries.

"Crime

In the 1990s, Bogotá was considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world. At one point it had a homicide rate of 80 per 100,000 people. Since then, however, Bogotá has gone to great lengths to change its crime rate and its image. The change was the result of a participatory and integrated security policy that was first adopted in 1995. Because of its success, this security policy has continued to be implemented ever since. In 2005, Bogotá had a murder rate of 23 persons per 100,000 inhabitants, a 71% drop from what it had 10 years ago. Interestingly, by the way of comparison, the city today has a lower murder rate than Washington, D.C., Caracas, São Paulo, Mexico City, Panama City, Detroit, Chicago and Rio de Janeiro. The situation in Bogotá seems to be greatly improved in terms of security and public safety from five years ago, and the atmosphere is much more relaxed", said Marshall Louis, a spokesman for the United States Embassy.[3]"

I am originally from ST Vincent and go back annually to visit my family. It only has a population of 130 000 or so ... including Grenadines. The per capita murder rate is pretty damn high there so its not saying much to compare the two ... although I understand that things have gotten better in Colombia. and that's great cuz I should be visiting soon.
SVG is one of the largest marijuana producers in the Caribbean and this leads to law and order (and hence crime) issues.
Funny to see ST Vincent on here!!!!!!!!!!1

Crime rate includes jay walking or just the murder rate? I'll assume just murders. But should we take into consideration tourists or non-tourists? Usually this rate unscrupulously factors in deaths due to organized crime, guerilla and other armed conflict bloodshed. None of which takes place in the larger cities in Colombia. These figures can be very misleading.

In a population that tiny even an couple murders in a single year make a big difference. So you 'd really have to look at SV&G over about 10 years to get significant perspective.

FWIW, the Grenadines are, in this sailor's opinion, the best sailing in the Caribbean. Magnificent area.

It's a bit strange that the Economist is counting El Salvador as a Caribbean nation, given that it has no coast on that sea. And also Guatemala, which has a tiny sliver of Caribean but is so not a part of that culture.

Honduras is the most scary place i've been in, and i've been to Cali, Sata Marta, Casrtagena in Colombia, all over Peru.

Trinidad was probably no. 2, and I lived ther for 6 months. But eveyone new- all he locals told us "Don't go tp Levunthill- they'll break into your car pull you out and shoot you" so I never went there.

Shymkent in Kazakhstan also had a high murder rate. Ony visited for 2 days though.
I am moving to Maracaibo Ven. soon. I hear it's safer than Caracas, but not by much. Have to be careful, like I am when I am in the mountains doing extrem sports.

There is a new study out from a research firm in Brazil comparing all the homicide rates in Latin America and comparing Latin America with most other places in the world. Latin America has the highest homicide rate for youngsters 15 to 24. El Salvador was the highest but Colombia was the second highest. Guatemala and Venezuela have very high rates too.

Larry in Seattle for the moment.
