Where would you take your dad to in Cali?

Hi there!

My dad, a very active, good looking, young - 61 years old man, is visiting Cali for a week to assist to some seminars. I have been in Cali for a few months but haven't really gone out too much. I need some suggestions about places to visit, restaurants, bars, strip clubs (nothing too explicit or gross) or things he can do to have a good time and feel comfortable. He is not very demanding, and he adapts to any situation. Any other suggestions are welcome..
Thanx

Hola!

If I was going to be a tour guide in Cali with my father and he was 61, I think first I would start with basic neighborhood or family activities. Visiting people makes the difference. I have found that exploring and looking for items back in the USA as gifts make for a nice adventure trip. Going to Los Ponchos night club is unique, but hopefully he will appreciate Salsa or have an open mind to music. Taking time to go to local NEW Auto Dealers will be an experience also. One of the best things would be to shop for a bunch of food and throw a BBQ for friends and family. I have done it a few times and you and your father would look ESPECIALLY good ambassadors of your own country!

I forgot to mention that Palmetto Mall will be having its 3rd year anniversary this month, so you could have him there to see the fashion show. Its a nice place to visit!

I am certainly no expert, but I was under the impression a strip club in Colombia generally was also a puteria / whiskeria. Basically, if you go to the nudy bar in Colombia, you can pay for a female companion (one of the dancers) if you desire. Many have little apartments or habitacions conveniently attached to the premises. I am just throwing this out there since you said, "strip clubs, nothing too explicit or gross." If you can make a purchase, and have carnal knowledge of the chick you just watched dance to ven bailalo - that might qualify as explicit.

It is all relative, is he from Perú as well?

He might like música de cuerda, watch some salsa shows or bellydance, a Peruvian restarurant.

As a father he might enjoy talking about women, family while going up el cerro de las 3 cruces with his son.

Tierra Mestiza in San Fernando might be just the right place to take him, if he's Peruvian...

Thank you for all your replies. Yeah, I don't think going to a strip club is a good idea then, if it is more like a puterio. What is Los Ponchos? I like the idea of going to a Peruvian restaurant but for me. My dad just came from Peru. he lives there. I am sure he'd like to go to a typical Colombian restaurant - or Caleno. Any suggestions?. Desideria, thanks for the offer, I need to check what's my dad schedule since he is here for some seminars. Is Tierra Mestiza a peruvian restaurant?

Desideria (Moderator) says on Nov 10, 2007, 12:05:

No, tuco, it's a Colombian restaurant, but it has the local culture and folklore as theme. They play traditional music, live music on weekends with trios and small groups and serve typically Colombian food. I love that place, just listen to Silvio Rodriguez or Garzon y Collazos, drink Chilean red and eat empanadas and papas chorreadas. It's a mixed crowd, mainly a little older people but especially people who appreciate the Mestizo culture and cuisine.

Morrongo .... jajaja Well, I have a buddy who is the stereotypical Colombiano, so I have been well educated book-wise, but never (God's honest truth) stepped foot in a whiskeria. So I just wanted to qualify that I was giving information based on hearsay and not actual first hand experience.

Hola!

Los Ponchos is the Salsa night club. I am not sure if its difficult to go into normally, but a local there took us it was a quiet night, since Shakira was visiting that weekeend and they had a Shakira dance contest that night downtown.

I have a few pics, if I could learn how to add pics to this comment.

The guy is 61. He hasn't got much time left. I'd take him to a different whorehouse every night so that he could die content.

Kilometro 18 is a nice half-day trip to see a little of the countryside. It's about 20 to 30 minutes drive. Bring a jacket, the climate is different to Cali and it gets chilly, even in the daytime. There's not much to do except eat lunch or have a drink at one of the restaurants.

Cali Zoo is very well done. A nice change of pace from the desorden of city centre Cali.

que nota!

I'd do the K18 thing like Pedro suggests. Jaja, Kat, good one about Chipi, but sadly the are some on here who think visiting a shopping center is a cultural experience in Cali.

Yeah, perhaps you shouldn't take me up on my offer. After all, my friends took me to pray the rosary the day after my arrival....(and I'm not even Catholic...or anything else either)

Colombiche says on Nov 12, 2007, 13:27:

Be careful, colombians love inviting people over for rosaries, novenas, mil Jesuses..... and any other form or prayer.

Not only will you be invited, you will be asked to lead the prayer at one point. If its' a rosary, they will hand you the beads and point to the bead you are supposed to pick up at. If it's a novena, they will hand you the little book so you can read off of it, then you have to sing "ven ven ven, ven a nuestras almas" while the kids in the room play flutes and panderetas. Don't worry too much, there is always an old lady and a drunk cousin in the room who sing louder than everybody else, they will drown out your voice.

Yes, it goes something like this "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus....". You stop every now and then to take a gasp of fresh air, say an hour father, and perhaps sip a tintico.

The first day was the rosary and everybody was dressed up and looked very nice and there was I, the gringa, in my shorts and tee (I had no idea we we're going to a social thingie). The topic of the day was los misterios dolorosos and it only got more painful and bloodier all the time. I was watching this little hummingbird at a birdfeeder in the patio....

the next occasion was an outdoor party when we all ate a lot of empanadas and everybody (the same group of friends) got extremely drunk on aguardiente and performed a mock wedding making coarse fun of religion and sacraments....

I don't mind the novenas, they are rather charming with all the panderetas and villancicos, but I guess I'm not heavy-duty at all...

I went

ave, ave, avena quaker
ave, ave, a veinte el vaso
