Where to stay in Cali

Will be going to Cali mid-Feb, would love to hear
your suggestions re: where to stay. Any reasonably
- not necessarily cheap - hospedaje downtown, or
will I have to go to the outskirts? Will I be able
to obtain a discount at local hostals if I pay them
