Where to Open Bank Account for a Company

I created a company and now I want to open a bank account for the company. I'm not Colombian and I don't have a cedula.

The idea is to fund the account with enough cash to qualify for the investor's visa. If they want a larger deposit, that's fine - all they need to do is offer higher interest.

I get a different excuse from every bank I visit . . . and I refuse to beg a bank for anything. The bank needs to establish why I should choose them, not the other way around.

Does anyone know a bank that will open a company account for me - without creating imaginary or artificial barriers? I'm in Bogota . . . but I could go anywhere.

........." The bank needs to establish why I should choose them, not the other way around."

Be sure and let us know how that approach works out for you...............,,,

And.....for the investors visa........you might want to do a little bit of research on how funds need to be transfered...............Hope everything works out...........you sound like you are really going to teach these Colombians a thing or two.......

I'd be happy to teach them how to shake off their widespread (and mildly inaccurate) image of a drug, militant and corruption infested, irrelevant paperwork-laden, murderous third-world hell hole of a country.

I may even consider waiving my usual feel for said teaching.

Alas, all I really want is to open a company account at a bank that actually wants a new customer.

I'll find that bank, it just takes time.

As for the transfer itself, I think I've figured out that part . . . and the form 4 vs form 5 issue.

But I'm always eager for more information. Is there something specific you are thinking?

Well............first, you seem to be of the impression that you can transfer these funds into any bank..........You really need to get some professional advice.............PBH is usally only good for a guideline on these things............

Ahh..........you have the right idea then.....send Robi a pm.....he knows a lot about this stuff............he's actually pretty stupid about everything else........but he has a lot of knowledge on the subject you ar inquiring about.............try and avoid meeting him in person.............smelly f**ker.......if you have to meet him.....stay upwind..

that's a bit of a wide open question....why don't you start with where you are and THEN ask where.

can only suggest places in medallo. had my account in oviedo for 19 years. it's THE place. talk to jimmy abdala there, he's a friend for many years.

oh, by the way, if you think they'll kiss your hand, you need to rethink your posture. they have depositors in the billions....qualifying for 'investor status' to them, is not big cheese.

anyway, good luck

"The bank needs to establish why I should choose them, not the other way around."

My cousin is married to a Paisa and has many dealing in Colombia.. I told him about your post and he laughed.. You are not in Kansas anymore in Colombia ,

I read him your sentence and he said you have to make a minor change to it... You need to establish why the bank should do business with you , not the other way around.. They don't really give a shit about any gringo business and they don't trust us..

You are not in North America anymore.. He said if you get arrogant , demanding , have an attitude , give them a hard time they will throw your butt out of the bank..

This sucks on how the banks will treat you but this is Colombia..

They are very leery of money laundering and you have to justify th source of your money before you can make a large deposit or transfer large amounts of cash into your colombian account. Well said Cman, Twm is not in Kansas anymore.

Yeah twmcm basically you are going to have to kiss their butt and hope they might consider doing business with you.. My cousin and his wife have a house and a successful small business in Medellin... It took him a long time to get an account , they don't care if you have a 100 million to deposit..

I hope you re-think your strategy for getting them to take your money..

when i first got my account at oviedo, they made me wait 14 months...i spent 350 grand u.s. there in my mfg activities, they didn't give a shit. because i was the only foreigner around, they were convinced it was a front and i was a capo. doin dope stuff like everyone else who had money. i finally took the bank pres to task and told him bluntly. if you don't give me an account, it ain't gonna be cause you think i'm dealin dope. i have my own business and it's not drugs. i envited him to our bodega--he never came--but the end result, was, i got my account. i could have got an account at bank de la republic in botero plaza, but that was exactly where i was tryin to get away from.

getting better says on Jun 21, 2008, 16:49:

Once you get an account with one bank it is easier to open an account with a bank that is convenient for your business, even if they have refused first time round. So if your company can open an account with a bank in Colombia that you have an relationship already, e.g. a Colombian subsidiary of an overseas bank that that you already have a relationsip, even if that bank does not offer the services you need in Colombia, then you will be well on the way.
