Where to buy exotic fruit in medellin, like mangostinos (mangosteens)

Yo quiero exotic fruit. I know that mangostinos are native to southeast asia but that in colombia they are grown in the town of Mariquita in the state of Tolima. Where can I buy these fruits in medellin? Any ideas?

In Cali, I get them from the women selling them on the street, just as you would aguacates, mangos etc....ask around.

I'm not in Cali right now, but i last bought them in May, on La Guadalupe as a matter of fact. They are very tasty, but, like guamas, you have to work for the meager "meat' you get out of them. But like Peter suggests, there are dozens of native fruits you should try first. Some of my favorites are mamonsillo, zapote, the above mentioned guama, guayaba and its bitter cousin guayaba agrida....... and then there are the juices like jugo de lulo, guanabana, maracuya...............

hi guys, thanks for the responses.

billyb, if you bought them in may then i doubt it it still mangosteen season but i will into it. are they as tasty as people say? I dont mind working for the meager meat if the meat is good :)

Peter, im sure i have tried just about everything by now, including mamoncillo (the poor mans lychee, as far as im concerned), zapote (pretty decent, had these in peru), guayaba, feijoa, lulo juice, guanabana, maracuya, etc.

In peru i had too many fruits to name, including chirimoya, dragon fruit (pitahaya), anona, rambutan (another asian fruit growing nicely in the south american jungles), uchuva, kiwis, pacae, etc etc.

All the fruit coming into Medellín goes to Plaza La Mayorista in Itagüí. Take the metro and get off at Ayurá stop. From here you can walk, it takes about 10 minutes to get there from the station. Once at the Mayorista ask for Las Malvinas, it's a huge warehouse type place with all of the freshest fruits and vegetables in Medellín. You're going to love it. The also have the cheapest prices!
