Where is this girl now? (The Girl That Sells Roses)

I was sad to read that the actress from The Girl That Sells Roses was sent to jail.

Does anybody know if she's out now?

I haven't heard anything about her in quite awhile. Here's an article from 2004:

Wonder if this is true? "But the money she made from the film and some acting work that came afterwards was soon spent on drugs and partying, and Tabares returned to the streets from where she had been plucked, making small amounts of money charging journalists for interviews"

Always hard to tell with this kind of stuff

ooops! ....Did I say that?

"The film heroine is also unable to sell any of her wares to buy food and starves to death in a city where life is cheap."

She's stabbed - not starves to death. A brilliant ending the way it is filmed. Hats off to Gaviria. He did a good job with this film - of course on a shoe string budget. A lot of people are negative towards this film but I think it's brilliant and a great acheivement - especially if you have spent time here.

Correction: It was el zarco that was murdered.

So, she is not claiming to be innocent. Anyway, I thought the maximum jail sentence in Colombia was 15 years.

What other Colombia films are noteworthy... specifically about Medellin?

Usher: Rosario Tejeras

Lcacique says on Mar 17, 2008, 11:31:

beisbollover: What are you talking about? The actress in question was in La Vendedora de Rosas.

Rocinante: I thought Gaviria did a great job of adapting "The little matchstick girl," La Vendedora de Rosas is a gripping film.

Lauthra: Rocinante was talking about Lady Tabares character in the film, she is stabbed to death at the end of the film. You're right, however, about the actor that played El Zarco, Giovanni Quiroz.

rocinante says on Mar 17, 2008, 11:48:

Zarco con ojos claros is a fucker in that movie. He actually attended Cannes with Tabares.

The images of her grandmother are haunting and with cheap filming equipment Gaviria was able to create some awesome atmospheric effects. I love the globos in the beginning and how arepas are translated into "Rice Cakes" in the subtitles. That's like translating Tacos to "meat filled crispy tortillas"

Usher I HATE this movie and I saw it last night and I really can't stand it - yet I popo it in once every few months. But the filming and language is sensational. "La Virgen de los Sicarios". What makes the filming so good is that you see some awesome shots of Medellín - in barrio Boston and Centro, Avenida Oriental. They go to the Cathedral Metropolitana and Sabanetta at one point near the beginning. They stroll through La Playa and Junin for quite a few scenes - past the Astor Desert place's competition, and there is a near killing 2 blocks from my apartment. Also a nice shot of "Super Muebles" on Oriental and 57-Argentina. I love the name of that place.

But the movie story line is tough and cannot work in a non homosexual context. If you can get past that you may like it.

But really the only reason is for tons of on location filming and the message works.

So, this picture below is not taken from a film... just a random picture in the street... apparently Roblado...

Lauthra says on Mar 17, 2008, 17:03:

Yeah, I know it's about the actress, for some reason I thought I was told she was dead, but apparently I'm wrong, cos cant seem to find anything online about that.

Lcacique says on Mar 17, 2008, 17:21:

Most everyone in the film is dead. I heard the young actress that the film begins with was taken in by Gaviria, but I have no idea if that is still the case.

Usher - yes. I sent you a PM a few days ago. Did you get it? It's not a random shot but a professional photo from National Geographic. It IS Robledo and I would bet large sums of cash on that.

Tabares was interviewed and photographed at her home 2 years ago and she was not in prison. She looked very different but still impovershed. Her room looked like it did in the film with exposed brick holes used as shelving for small items.

rocinante, I didn't get it, it's not even in my junk mail. Weird.

I knew there was something good about that photo.

You live in Robledo... What's it like?

droble77 says on Mar 18, 2008, 10:42:

Man, that is some f***ed up shit, had no idea this woman's life was that messed up.

I believe in the film "Rodrigo D No Futuro" many of the actors also ended up dead or in jail.

I can see though why these films might be resented by many Colombians, it does portray the grimy underbelly of Colombia and makes it seem like a vast majority live like that.

I must say I had very mixed feelings about "La Sierra" being that it's a documentary filmed by non-Colombians. Remember that one of the key figures they interview gets killed by the military police a little over half-way through the film. The gringo directors sort of portray him in a sympathetic light, but I can't help think that their mucking about in that rough neighborhood with cameras ended up helping to get that guy killed in the first place. Those gringos must have attracted a LOT of attention from other parraco groups and the military police.

So this guy's death, which they may have inadvertently or indirectly caused, ends up getting them all kinds of media attention and a career boost. Maybe I'm too idealistic but I'm not exactly comfortable with that!

Roci, I also found "Vendedora de Rosas" a moving film despite the fact that the plot and premise is admittedly somewhat corny. And call me a sicko but I found some of the dialogue and situations the gamines found themselves in very funny.
