Where is the best SUSHI in MDE in your opinion?

Next time I go, I might want to give it a whirl, I know you dont go to Colombia for SUSHI but in case I get sick of the arroz con pollo and the bandejas and sancochos.. Is it good compared to Lima, Miami, LA, NYC? or whats your take? How are the prices? Cheers and TIA

I had fresh Bunuelos right there fried fresh on a way home from a club 500 pesos each.. but where fantastic... in sandiego,, the lady was frying them right there in front of my eyes.. and boy where they good! Then I had fresh fried papas criollos with the option of salchichas or not.. with some salsa rosada.. quite tasty!

"And good sushi has to be fresh...That is why you will never get good sushi en Colombia."

Well I am 1/2 Japanese and sushi is very dear to my heart, so when my friend wanted to try it,, I wanted to be absolutely sure that it was up to par, or I knew I would be disappointed and it would most likely be a huge waste of money, LIKE THAICO!! Where everything is about aesthetics and the food takes a far away back seat! lol

Yeah , Mako,,, anytime you start mixing cultures food like Chinese/Japanese or Thai/Chinese etc etc,, I find this seems to "cheapen the quality of the food to a rather large extent of one or the other and any normal sushi conaceer will know you just cant mess around with sushi.... Just my opinion.. thanks for the link..

But CaptL I wonder what kind of fish is being used and where they get the Tuna and Salmon? Or whatever? Maybe they use Mackeral from Peru? Who knows?

Sushi in Colombia is generally bastardised and often contains cream cheese.

In my experience, Japanese and other ethnic restaurants have not succeded in Medellin. The Paisas do not have a desire to try different foods. there have been a couple of semi-decent Japanese restaurants, such as Sakurana and Otori, but, they failed, Sushi light, as mentioned above, is not bad. I know of two locations at El Tesoro and La Strada and have tried both. Chinese, Italian and Mexican are almost impossible to find and never good. You need to go to Bogota or Cali.

Try the restaurant above portafino casino - same company as the one in Tesoro. Tuesday night is 2 for 1 - you need to go up 2 sets of escalators. There is a line after aroudn 8 normally. Also; there is one down past Park Poblado as you head down to Patio Bonito - sposed to be good although I have not personally eaten there yet.

Investment Strategy - buying when others are crying!! Offloading when others are gloating!!!

I have not had great sushi in Colombia. It's like Argentina or Mexico in this regard.

Sushi can be a crapshoot anywhere. I went to a place in my neighborhood and it was decent. I went there again recently and they gave me some big pieces of fish, but from the taste of it it was old and they were trying to get rid of it. This is a five minute walk from where dozens of fishing boats are docked so proximity to the ocean is no guarantee. I will go someplace else next time, there are no shortage of sushi places here.

Medellin is a pleasant city but not really cosmopolitan- a bit sleepy, you might even say- and if you want good foreign food you will probably need to get out of town. But hey, no place has everything.

Sushi to Go on at the top of the hill on Calle 1 is where we used to eat a couple of times a week. Never any problems and we would eat just about everything on the menu.

Sushi to Go is great. The guys who prepare it know what they're doing, and they are very creative. I'm no expert either, but before going to that place, I didn't care for sushi. Now I like it, and have not really had sushi that was quite like it since.

There's also another great sushi place that I went to in Medellin, a bit upscale for my liking, but I forget the name and location, so it's pretty useless of me to even mention it.
