How would Colombians take to Mexican resturant? I take it that most Colombians do not like spicy / hot foods.

I think a Indian resturant may work out better. Then again I am guessing here.

Mmm. .. yes, an Indian restaurant! And a Thai restaurant.

Wait, even better a real Bar B Que rib joint; a real one, with the meat falling off the bones (pork or beef ribs and I mean 'smoked' ribs), some Hot Links, potato salad, genuine American drippin-from-your-lips Bar BQ sauce and with some pumpkin pie for desert and an ice cold Sam Adams to wash it down.

Take me home....

I know what you mean. I wanted to take a friend to a Mexican resturant to taste some real hot salsa, but could not find one. I told them that I would make them some mole the next time I go.

Actually the Thai resturant would be good.

I am actually thinking a Korean BBQ would be a hit. They have them all over Japan.

You are correct. Not all has to be spicy, but what do you put on all the stuff you just mention. If you go to most Mexican's house for dinner you will find fresh salsa and chillies on the table.

I think the tortilla vs arepa war was already brought up. I am pro flour tortillas. Thanks, now I have a serious craving for one.

Maybe, but I don't think so, they generally don't like spicy food in Medellin and the average person eats nothing but variations of Bandeja Paisa. A good antioqueno restaurant will do well.

To echo what Medellín Traveler said earlier: "Medellin is full of Mexican restaurants?". And I'm not making fun.

I also thought that a good Mexican restaurant would to well in Colombia, especially in Medellín but my husband made very good points:

1. Most Colombians do not like spicy food. It takes a lot to convince them to try it and after they do, they still hate it.
2. Colombians do not like to try "new" stuff.
3. Colombians do not like to spend money on food they don't know and may not like vs. a typical meal with Colombian style beans and rice.

with all due respect I don't think most restaurants in Bogota (at least) that pretend to sell mexican food is "real" mexican food but tex-mex food. Yes indeed as Medellin Traveler said not all mexican food has to be spicy but spicy food and tortillas are the most famous, you can eat a fish with tortilla but it is not necessary to eat with tortilla all the time (ask houstongal, maybe she can give you further details on pescado a la veracruzana).

Please guys, burritos is not mexican food but "american".

I personally hate Bimbo flour tortillas, they suck. =)

That reminds of a story my uncle told me.

My grandfather is old school from the ranch and used to make his own toliet paper from paper he would get here and there. He would always carry small cut out paper in his back pocket. He would use it when he had to go. One day he makes his little stack of toilet paper he got from my grandmother and about an hour later he starts to jump up and down screaming. It turns out old grandma went shopping for chillies, sure enough grand pops used that bag.

That is some nasty shit.

It just opened. Owner was a nice guy, wife from Calí. He was asking the patrons to write a note on the wall with a marker to wish him luck. I wrote "best Mexican food south of Canada" ;) -- Seemed reasonably popular when I was there with the pre-dancing, after-drinking crowd, it's not a pretentious place. I asked them to make my meal as spicy as they could. They didn't have El Yucateco Habanero Sauce, but put together a reasonably spicy meal with lots of jalapeno peppers and ?San Luis sauce, plus excellent pico de gallo. Extremely tasty food.

Not exactly true...maybe in some areas but there are some areas far into the country that eat extreemly spicy. I am speaking from experience. I lived in Mexico as an exchange student when I was 15 years old. I lived with a Mexican family and had many Mexican friends that I made while there. The food was spicier than any Tex-mex that I have ever had. (I was born and raised in TX and lived there untill I moved here last year.) In Mexico the food was often too spicy for me to handle, mainly it was the beans that are extreemly HOT.

Not all Mexicans like spicy food, but many people in most regions of Mexico do. Hola, habanero. To me, Tex Mex just means certain dishes that lend themselves well to fast food joints and borrow much from Mexican antojitos. It's hard to get a "Big Bell Cheesy Beefy Melt" in Mexico under that name. I rarely eat at Taco Bell, but always regret it when I do.

Off topic a little, but if you are in Miami, and want GOOD, authentic Mexican food ... take Krome Ave south into Homestead. There are several mom and pop Mexican restaurants in downtown Homestead. My favorite was La Cabradita. I don't know if it is still there.
