Where Can I Dance in Barranquilla?

So my Colombian friends, the ones who taught me how to dance like a true costenya (sorry, my com cant handle Spanish letters yet) in my frozen north European city say " Wow, youre on the coast, you must be dancing 29 hours a day) forgetting one very important thing. I'm a girl who doesnt know anyone here. Which means that I am kind of reluctant to brave the wilds of the BAQ nightlife.

But I'm starting to get withdrawl symptoms for salsa. WHERE can I go to dance here (needs to be safe). Or better still, where are there dance CLASSES where I can go? Music classes too? Someone must know something.

They say a woman is better off alone than badly accompanied, but desperate times etc. I've been stuck in the house since I got here, and am now ready to marry anyone just so that I do not have to spend my Friday nights reading moronic posts on PBH from immigrant phobic sexual tourists. I have my own teeth and an EU passport, what say you?

Please do not tell me to move to Medellin. I have to stay here for the time being. Carita.

Not if the roqueros have anything to do with it. But I will settle for learning new dances. I dance merengue, bachata, vallanato and cumbia too. I tried to learn Bolivian diablada as well, but the leaps were too much.

And I want to start with tango. Its not a Colombian thing. I look for places to dance everywhere I go. :)

Rey: of course you would lead. The dancefloor is no place for feminism.

The learn the Tejano style cumbia I might even let Mario and Miguel_Nail cut in.
Except they might be slow dancing togather or
out hunting for mejicanos and brujas.

Haha, CM! Let me watch you dance with Carita...i want to see how a Gringo Dances Froggy-Style......remember, Carita, you are known by who you dance with.......dont let anyone see you with El Elvis Presley de PBH....you will never live that down....and thats Vicente Fernandes, Senor Froggy!....speaking of frogs, go to Frogs Legs in BAQ, VC (Villa Country mall second floor) or a place called Barullo (spelling?)...music varies....but expect to bribe the door man to get in, unless you are a mamacita, of course....

Just my opinion...

ps...lots of smiles at the club entrances, but money will get you in.....the doormen get all the action they want from inside, but that doesnt buy aguardiente....=)

The Palacio de Salsa in Leon, is more "Palacio de Cumbia" I learned my salsa and merengue from the Cubans.
I learned my bachata from the puerto ricas.
I learned my cumbia from the colombians.

When I landed in mexico in the grubbiest town in the centre of the country, they were asking me

"WHERE are you from?"

To be sure, they were CRAZY for cumbia there, I dont know whether it was just a local thing or not, I wasnt there for long enough. But I never danced so much cumbia in my life.

Yeah, they dance cumbia there. In a very wierd kind of way. However, I only went to dance ONCE becasue I soon learned that a girl just can't go alone to dance, the way we can in Europe. Not if you don't want to be shark-food.

And by first-order approximation, I assume it is the same here.

places to dance salsa Well, I would say that if you wanted to dance salsa, your choice is quite limited in the north of the city.

I would recommend Charanga79 for a decent place in the north--- its on calle 93 near Mcdonalds.

Rico Melao is a cool place..its on the corner opposite "la troja"---famous salsa bar in B´quilla (although sometimes it can be a bit dodgy safety wise)

There are also lots of places down on the Murillo like Alcatraz and Maria Mulata.......Also there are some salsa places like Taboga---excellent music but not places to take a girl dancing!

I have some phones number of dance teachers if you are still interested in classes...........

So if mamacita = "hot chick" I thought it was spelled mamasita.

What is papasito then?

Miguel_Clavo says on Apr 30, 2007, 13:34:

KG....that is what you want the mamacitas calling you... sort of like the idea behind the response to Whos your daddy?...your response should be "Im your daddy.." jajjaa...althoug i am sure some of the PBH female posters will also educate you in what papasito means ..btw.....the spelling is similar to the s or z in a word like authoriZe or authoriSe....in the US it is with a Z, and say, Australia, i believe (??), the correct spelling is with an S.....but Harper Collins SP dictionary has it mamacita, but defines it as "mum" or "mummy"...????....mom or mommy?

Elmo, you're such a sweet talker Thats what I LOVE about latinos. Poetry with every word.

Elmo, I feel honoured, but I dont think I'm your type ... I've only got two legs you see. As for taking my ass dancing, well, I do hear you have this thing for donkeys.

I was well trained in La Habana on the ancient art of the cockblock, the special dance move which basically means you can look, oh yes, but you can't touch, oh no. It was one of the first Rueda de Casino moves I learned. Works like a dream to. So if you think you can do those octopus moves on me, you are welcome to try. The Cubanos were not successful, and I hear that they are the Masters.

As for drinking. For that, elmocito, you would have to come to MY country. In my country, the beer is twice as strong as that cat's urine you drink in the USA, but the girls prefer vodka or tequilla. I will never drank aguardiente again. Forget the other delights of Colombia, aguardiente should be banned under chemical weapons conventions and is on Carita's list of Class A Substances, along with that crap the Cubans drink when they don't know the guy who knows a guy in the Havana Club factory.

But, I don't drink with strange men, and they tell me they don't come much stranger than you, papacito. But thanks for the info.

I think you have your words mixed up. You can't be a cockblock...only Elmo's buddy can be one of those. What you are referring to is being a tease. The best way to deal with those is move on to the next. You missed your opportunity with me. :)

CaritadeAngel says on May 2, 2007, 10:19:

Greg, don't worry, your age will catch up with you eventually, I hope you discover the wonder of love eventually. You should read "Memorias"...

Anyway I might as Gabito to write a sequal "Memories of My Daft Gringos" or somthing like that.

As for blocking, IMHO you can block alone, you can block in groups, guys can block, and girls can block, and this instance, the block is the dance move, not a person. (it involves spining out just as as the "Deed" is about to be done). Women have being doing this, I imagine, since dancing was first invented as a vertical expression of a horizontal desire.

Ha ha...your description sounds more like "Dissing" than blocking. Blocking is when someone takes or attempts to take who you have your eye on. Can be a male or female.

Only as old as you look and act. I am 34 and don't look it. Sometimes act it.

CaritadeAngel says on May 2, 2007, 20:23:

Nope, I'm a lady, no disrespect intended and
...its part of the game. Your description implies some kind of nastiness or malintent.

I once saw a dance (I think it was a kind of cumbia, but it was long ago and I can't remember) where the men tried to "tag" the women, and it was her move to get out of the way before he got her ... kind of cool, and a kind of ritualised expression of what normally happens anyway. You should spend a good hour watching people dance, you can tell a lot about someone from the way they dance.

I'm always respectful unless he's drunk (in which case I dont dance with him, but there is nothing worse than dancing with someone who is smashed when you are sober, and, in Colombia at least, I am always sober) or goes to far (very rare this ever happens). A man has to try. In all fairnes you can't blame a guy for trying his luck. You propose, we dispose. But we all should mind our manners, no?

Only 34? Lovely. I hope you find your true love soon, if you haven't already found her, and then you need fear neither dissing nor blocks, of whatever kind.
