Where can I buy a decent dog in cali( Not a hot dog)

I am planning on buying another dog here in Cali however does anyone know of anyplace that would be reputable? I bought a so called schnauzer for my mother in law last year near Chipechapee mall and it was perfect. I mean they had the haircut down and the beard and the eyebrows trimmed to perfection. I was really convinced that I was getting a schnauzer however with time, it turned into something else. No harm done because he is a great dog and he was really cheap but I still don't want to make that mistake again. I am looking to buy something with a temper but small like a mini pinscher.Not one of the frail looking ones but one like what tried to attack me weeks ago. It has to be able to destroy the Cucaracha and an occasional rat unlike the other two pussy dogs we have.
