I live in the U.S. and in the Pacific northwest. I make no secret about that. But just because I live in the U.S. that doesn't make me an expert on what's going on in L.A, Miami, or even Seattle, for that matter. I could live here and have my head in the sand. By the same token, just living in Colombia doesn't make one an expert on Colombia.

I think the biggest difference in what people report is in how people report what they know or think they know. GIB, for all his warnings, simply reports what he sees and hears and reports them as just that--what he sees and hears. When it conflicts with other's observations, he points that out. That's about all you can ask from a random collection of people with varying qualifications.

What IS misleading is when someone comes to a place (be it Bogota, or East L.A.) and forms a general opinion of a place based on an isolated experience. e.g. when someone posts "I took a bus in Colombia from Bogota to Pasto and didn't have a problem."
O.K. so far, but when they go on to conclude "therefore anyone can go anywhere on a bus without a problem" they cross over the line. They have no idea whether such a claim is true or not, but speak on the authority of their one trip.

As an occasional visitor to Colombia, I can not argue the facts, but I can certainly argue the conclusions that are drawn from those facts.

Following GIB's logic I must have a clearer picture of the US than someone born and bred here because they are just being overly patriotic. Which now that I look at it that way I have to say he is right. The average American sees what he wants to whilst I constantly see the bad things as well as the good. I really see where GIB is coming from now.

Oh, all you Americans who live in other countries, don't argue with me about the US because I LIVE HERE and you don't.

platano says on Apr 19, 2006, 21:35:

Crazy4cali, I built a house in Cauca. I took the road from Cali to Popayan 134 times over a period of three years (living in Cali, building in Cauca on weekends). Nothing ever happened. My sister-in-law has done the same for the past five years. Now we are talking about eight years of regular trips to Popayan by bus or car, approximately 270 trips altogether (she doesn't travel *every* weekend. I'm talking about this past weekend, in case you think I'm talking about the situation years ago. My wife is making the trip next weekend from Cali to Popayan. That will make 271 trips (542 one-way trips, to be technical).

So my question is: how many freakin' trips have to be made without incident before someone can have the right to say: TRAVEL BY ROADS IN RURAL COLOMBIA FROM CALI TO POPAYAN IS NOT DANGEROUS! DON'T BE SO DAMN PARANOID; ENJOY COLOMBIA!plátano

I'm not picking on Popayan or Pasto WRT: "how many freakin' trips have to be made without incident before someone can have the right to say: TRAVEL BY ROADS IN RURAL COLOMBIA FROM CALI TO POPAYAN IS NOT DANGEROUS!"

It all depends. To some people if ANYTHING ever happened it's not safe while to others it can be safe even if they get stopped every now and then by the occasional, "un-official" roadblock.

Being "safe" is a lot like being "rich" in that it's all a matter of perspective and can never be measured by an absolute metric.

That's why all the "is this or that safe" questions are impossible to answer, although they occasionally provide some entertainment.

White powder I saw pictures from Cali or Medellin taken during celebrations of a soccer game. People are covered with a white powder on their faces and clothes. Does anyone know what that powder is and what is the significance?

BxUnika says on Apr 29, 2006, 22:06:

Just got Back from Colombia on Tuesday I posted several pictures on my profile. I visited Bogotá/Cundinamarca, Boyacá, and Antioquia (Medellín and several villages). I liked Bogotá as a city because of the size but Cundinamarca and Boyacá seem very gloomy. Anybody have that impression? Antioquia was much prettier weather wise and with all the tropical flora y fauna.

morphus says on Apr 29, 2006, 22:44:

BxUnika, nice pics! Glad to hear you finally went to Colombia. We're going to have a PBH meet up in New York City soon. So far we got me, Rubiazo, elmodefoque and his daughter. If you want to come, let us know. morphus_x at yahoo.com if anybody is interested.

ezwriter The powder is flour and it has no significance except a tradition of celebrating with something you can throw at each other without harm. We used to do that at elections also but not any more.

kernow62 says on May 1, 2006, 18:14:

The white powder is cocaine, it is so readily available that they toss it around as if it were ordinary flour.

kernow62 says on May 1, 2006, 18:22:

No, BxUnika I enjoyed the flora of Bogotá, the roses were spectacular. It must be the perfect climate for the queen of flowers. There were also beautiful bougainvilleas, ojos de susana, nile lillies, the yellow flowered trees the name escapes me at the moment....

Bogota's climate is ideal for a wide range of flora that won't grow in Medellin, and vice versa.

I even observed my favourite wild plant Ulex europaeus, which took me by surprise until I learned that its seed arrived in the wool of sheep that were imported from the British Isles.
