When to lend a helping hand?

I was driving the outskirts of Bogota today and came upon a rather bad accident on the highway. Two guys on a motorcycle had taken a spill. They were both in shock I believe as one was standing up trying to pick up the other one who's leg was very bad broken. It was an ugly site. I noticed that as they were flailing on the pavement, all the cars were going around them. I too went around. Not much I could do I guess. My Colombian buddy said you can't stop because you might get assigned responsibility. What do you people think about this? In the USA I would have stopped.

Try not to worry about it. Unless you know what to do and have some type of large trauma kit, you probably would be in the way and could cause another accident. Same holds true in the U.S. . Just parking your car, to stop, could cause an accident or at the very least, conjest traffic, slowing down the ambulance and policia.

This information is not a negative statement, it is the truth and I hope you consider it. You did nothing wrong.

Hi Doc, I agree with you. Still a part of yourself says to stop. My friend did call it in though there were many cars that probably did too. Just wierd seeing cars go around a really bad scene of suffering on the pavement.

hmm.. I dont think anyone in New York would've stopped....

Monpirri says on Feb 18, 2008, 18:03:

I don't know what to say, but it is always good to give a helping hand to the one who needs it, of course you have to take into consideration your safety in the scene of wreck.
If you feel confortable helping someone who is hurt in the street go ahead and help him or help her and don't worry someone will notice that you are the person who stoppped to help.

Thank you very much for sharing your story.

Well it all depends of situation, the timing and the country where the accident happened.
But I know what you mean about a possible lawsuit in the states.

Everyone has their own comfort zone. If I have the tools and the talent to help someone I couldn't sleep after passing them by.

They did a psychological experiment in New York with a person supposed be passed out on the sidewalk. Not drunk..just passed out from the heat or whatever. Lots and lots of people passed by and did not stop. But as soon as one person stopped to helped all kinds of other people stopped to help also. Nobody it seemed wanted to make a commitment. But when one person did the rest followed. We are a strange bunch lol.

By the way dwr, it was approximately 27 years ago when I first stopped at an accident. I stood around and watched helplessly. I still remember the woman in the car with a broken leg, bleeding. I too was very frustrated, but this ended up motivating me to go learn "what to do", and this has not stopped to this day.

So if it really tugs on you, maybe you will consider taking a first aid class or EMT. It may be your calling or it may just give you comfort to know these things. Good luck.

All I can say to those who would just ignore the situation, for whatever the reason, picture yourself on the street bleeding and how you would be feeling watching everyone drive around you as if you were nothing but a wounded animal.

I have always stopped to help people in need, no matter what country I am in. In the event that something negative comes out of it, I still did the right thing.

The problem with today's world is that people are so cynical and paranoid about reaching out to others, yet when nobody is there for them they bitch and complain that nobody cares, they don't have real friends, etc.

Do unto others as you would have them to unto you.

the thing here is that in many cases, the police had blamed the person who helped out the injured so when they took them to hospital...you, who assisted them..must pay the initial treatment plus there has been situations where all this accident is a fake and they want to steal your car.
