What's your favorite brand??

Just wondering...
I need to bring some coffee back for some junkies here in the states but i don't drink the stuff. They really want Colombian coffee but not sure which to bring them. I know i can go with Juan Valdez..but is that the best??? They can buy that here in the states so was hoping someone might give me some other options on the best Colombian coffee.
Thanks.

Sello Rojo On my last trip I brought back 6 pounds of Sello Rojo for my friends and they all seem to love it. I myself am not a coffee drinker either, but my friends in Colombia tell me that this is a favorite there. You can find it in most Super Markets.

Coffee Dito on OMA, served in better resturants & coffee houses and still a good price at any supermarket.

My favourite brand is Chinese Tie Guan Yin tea.
although Omas coffe is said to quite good, then you should also get a packet of chocolate covered coffe beans from omas which also are very tasty.
You find Oma coffee also in El Dorado, so no worries, you can buy your coffe even just before your departure.

Forget Sello Rojo!!--only Cafe Oma or nothing at all Sello Rojo is not very good at all. Their bean are stale, pre ground, and not any better than Hills brothers or Maxwell house.

Given the fact the most of Colombia's premium cool mountain grown arabica beans, are exported to markets where Colombian coffee exporters derive their greatest profits, there really is not much good coffee in Colombia itself--period. In other words, Colombia's best beans are right here in the US.

But if you want to buy quality Colombian coffee to say it's from Colombia...OMA is the only coffee to buy. All the other coffee sold in Colombia, is sub-standard, stale, pre-ground coffee beans. If you are from the states, and you want great coffee here are two places that also have mail order :

1. http://www.intelligentsiacoffee.com/
2. http://www.coffeeandtea.com/
Nothing in Colombia can match the variety of coffee that these stores offer. They have the variety of fresh beans that are freshly roasted, ground or whole bean, with the acidity levels and and body that matches your taste

But if you must bring a bag from Colombia, Café from OMA is the only one worth considering.

Narino Supreme Can't get the ~ over the n in Narino-darn, but to me this the best coffee but Daddy Starbucks(should call them $$TENBUCKS$$ for what they charge for coffee)commandeers most of this region's market. Saw some at our local taget store for around $10/500 grams bags. I wish the humble growers could get 1/2 this money as their cut is 50-70-cents per pound for their labors.Interesting facts about coffee, takes 4000 beans for an lb. of ground coffee. The World's most expensive brand is Kopi Luwek from Indonesia and this bean is consumed then excreted by a small Civet Cat then recollected from this cat's droppings and cleaned and processed. Sells for $300/lb. Not my cup of tea,er coffee.

real coffee I read in a different thread that there are a few stores in Colombia that sell the real beans that are exported. I can't find that thread anymore. It was more a side note there.

Also, somebody wrote that you can buy beans from the coffee growers when you visit them. Is that true? Did anybody else ever try that?

I currently buy Colombian beans here that are pitch black and oily, grind it espresso fine, and use in normal coffee maker. I can use the coffee pot then to view a solar eclipse. I drink black and straight. Now that is what I call coffee. I hope I can find these beans in Colombia too, or I will have to roast myself.

Good morning Gomez So far I have been able to find good coffee beans locally, buying them online seems wrong to me, since I enjoy smelling them as I buy. Like Emeril says on Food Network - we need Smell-o-Vision.

If it's a gift... Go to Maku or other artisan shop that sells the mini burlap coffee bags. They come in 3" and 6 or 8' sizes and say "Cafe Colombia" and/or Juan Valdez on them. Even if you put the crappiest coffee in them, it still makes a great gift. Otherwise, I'd just buy good Colombian coffee in the states and save the weight.

By the way, I got some really crappy coffee beans one time that actually included rocks, one of which trashed my coffee grinder. Now I just buy Oma when I'm living there for a while.

Well...will be real honest with you.... These two organizations above are so active, and their mail distribution is quite large, the beans that they roast are always really fresh. They are both based out of Chicago, but the beans that go through their mail order, are actually roasted more recently than the ones in their store. When I walk in their store, I go crazy from the aroma..Every roast you can imagine, with beans from every continent.

The Coffee and Tea exchange is particularly reasonably priced. My friend in little Decatur, Illinois always tells me how everyone in the post office knows what's in the package when he goes to pick the up. One clerk told him the aroma through the box was so strong, he was tempted to "lose" the package and take it home.....

Thank you Gomez Those are great links! I wish I could be there in person because I usually go to a specialty store here and fill my own bag with mostly espresso roast, french roast and some almost green beans (for caffeine kick). My coffee is incredibly dark, flavorful and is a kick...which probably explains why I'm up at this hour talking about coffee...hmm, defaf perhaps?

tomorrow is after I sleep So I guess I missed several days of my life ....

I checked the web sites you mentiond here. http://www.coffeeandtea.com/ is very reasonably priced, I must say, so I might give them a try. I cringe when I have to pay over $10 for a pound of good coffee. I admit, I am spoled from Seattle, and Starbucks is definitely not the best coffee that Seattle has to offer.

I like AC's idea for gifts from Colombia. And nobody will know ... which reminds me of the photo of that other burlap bag somebody posted here. I wonder if I would get into trouble making copies of those "M" bags ...

Lionheart and acb I really think you will like the coffee and tea exchange. The guy has two stores. But his roasting operations are many miles away from both, but still in Chicago. He is a really nice down to earth guy and he knows that he sells his coffee at well below market for specialty/custom roasted coffee. He really enjoys selling his coffee to other Java lovers.....

What I do is buy some dark and light roasts, and then mix them. He has a couple he mixes too. In that way, you get the rich, full body of a dark roast, and some of the acidity that the lighter and medium roasts have.

Let me know what you think Lionheart
