Whats with all the Chinese

Have seen hordes of Chinese in the casinos in Medellin - anyone know why they are here (out of intrerest) Isf this is to do with Petroleum industry or is it that the new rich have put medellin on the tourist map? Some spoke basic spanish so im guessing they are working here, and dscounted the chinese version of a Conitiki tour.

My businessmen nephews from Cali import goods from China and have made several visits there. There appears to be a big boom in trading with the chinese at the moment. It´s basically cheaper to buy and import stuff from there than the US, depending on the goods.
Lots of Chinese businessmen are now making stronger links with Colombians for future business. Maybe this has something to do with it - or maybe they all own Chinese Take Aways?

Brit .................it's a combination of both.........future business.....and.....yes....restaurants..

Anywere around the world where you begin to see an uptick in a country's fortunes.......you will see an influx of Chinese before everybody else cops on to what is happening.

The casinos give a somewhat unbalanced picture...........when you see a lot of them in casinos..........it make you think there are are lot in the city.........................you are probably actually seeing ALL of them..........

Brit.......what sort of stuff are your nephews bringing in.................I'm doing the same........and I'm also consolidating containers.........which is unusual...........maybe I could do something with them........................assuming they are not Brits also......of course.

Do the Chinese learn and speak Spanish? They (a lot of them) don't speak English here in Florida; and many of the ones who do are unintelligble to me anyway. The Thais and Vietnamese seem to really try and learn the language. The wife has 4 Thai Buddhist monks in her English class.

Morning Raaaaaaaaaay,

They import electrical stuff mainly - from the US and Panama too.
Last time they went to China it was mainly furniture and ornaments they came back with, then they knocked them out to the local shops.
One of them has an import/export business in Cali and Bogota and exports flowers and wrought iron stuff.
And, no you´ll be quite safe, they´re both Caleños.
Monpirri, yeah, all that lead can´t be good for the body. I fancy one of those womens fur-lined crutch..er clutch purses though.

Very true! In Ecuador the "migracion and extranjeria" used to be packed with 90% Colombians. Nowadays you see mostly Chinese in those offices. Small shops like we have been seeing the first ones in Colombia, 1 Dollar-Shops, popping up in every corner. Also some bigger ventures like oil-companies etc. And yes, in Quito at least 50% of customers at the casinos are Chinese.

The other side to those Reuters stories, when American buyers want to pay $0.25 for something that costs $0.35 to make.....or else, well, something has to give. With all those stories, Walmart, Costco, Lowes, Home Depot etc has'nt slowed any of their buying from there.

China has a problem - no women. For a long time residents of China only have one child - many females are being aborted. This imbalance was first noticed in 1980. I'm not getting into details as I am tired. The Chinese are here for the same reason as many others. Get your internet bride fast - with the Chinese swooping in and the Colombian economy on the up (unemployement here gets lower almost every day) the days of the desperate Colombiana looking to make a sacrifice for her kids by relocating to a foreign country away from her family to be with a much older guy who doesn't share her culture or speak her langauge are numbered. You can count on that more than you can count on the peso at 1400.

Get an amigos.com account fast and hit 3000 miles radius search (by accident of course) and grab her while you can. Don't forget the visa process takes a year and she could change her mind. It's probably better to line up three brides just in case. Get in while you still can!

You are also correct about the women shortage in China. I wouldn't worry too much about them snapping up girls in Colombia though. I will get flamed big time for this - and probably deservedly so, but I don't think many Chinamen are considered good looking anywhere in the world. They also have a reputation for .... being small physically. Of course, with over a billion countrymen, there will be exceptions. How about that 7 footer playing NBA? But he is still uglier than spit.

"I cannot say I am happy now," says Lim, 29. "Sometimes I think I want to go back to the Philippines."

Culture clashes are frequent, says Fe Gimarino-Kim, a Filipina who married a South Korean in 1996.

In the Philippines, women often run the household and enjoy their own careers. In South Korea, "the man runs things. If you're a Korean wife, you must serve your husband."

Money is often a problem, too: Many foreign brides want to send money to their parents and siblings back home; if their husbands refuse, they sometimes do so surreptitiously. "They keep secrets and send money to their families," Gimarino-Kim says

Article 4 years ago: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5953508/

"Only seven of China's 29 provinces are within the world's average sex ratio. Zhang Qing's report cited eight "disaster provinces" from North to South China, where there were 26 to 38 percent more boys than girls.

The hint of "serious" problems ahead can be seen in the increasing cases of human trafficking as bachelors try to "purchase" their wives.

According to one estimate, over the next decade, some 40 million Chinese men will be unable to find wives due to the "scarcity" of females, thus the growing number of so-called "bachelors' villages" in various parts of China."

The Chinese already speak the language and are hooking up via the web for Colombian brides (other poor countries as well). The women are open to marriage with all types of foreigners. Not just US, Europe and Australia. They can't all get Spain so they settle for bachelors in other countries.
