whats with all the bombings lately??

several of them in a row now. We are going to Cartagena for Miss Colombia event and we are a little concerned now.

do you think it's possible the city of Cartagena might specifically be targeted during the festivities or (as one would hope) they'll leave it alone being the most important event in the country and all.

thanks in advance for your thoughts.

DANGEROUS IN MANY PLACES - 4 people including two innocent children were killed execution style here in South Florida several weeks ago alongside Florida's turnpike. It most likely was drug related.

- On Monday a Boeing 757 from Orlando landed on a taxiway at Newark instead of the runway. Could have been disastrous. Could also been drug or alcohol related.

- 101 U.S. troops were killed by enemy action last month in Iraq.

- 3,000 more Iraqis (Sunni, Shiite, Kurd) were slaughtered last month.

What's this all have to do with Colombia? It can be dangerous anywhere. You are smart to read and poll before going down to a potentially dangerous changing situation. I pray for Colombia since it seems the violence is on an upswing. Hasn't Uribe already had like 7 close calls?

Be vigilant wherever you go!

get down, get down. are you afraid of the boogie monster?

Yeah, the FARC is not too strong along the coast which is a shame because I'd love to see them scare the bejesus out of all the gringos there. A few dead gringos and then we'd see how few posts there would be from gringo carpetbaggers hoping to make their fortunes in Colombia. I still think a good business in Colombia would be to befriend gringos and then sell their asses to the FARC.

You guys are scary. I know you are being sarcastic ... but crap. Amtico has a good point. Doesn't matter where you are. You run a risk anywhere. I personally feel much more in danger in Miami than I do in Bogota or Villavicencio ... and Villovo just had a bomb go off last Saturday in front of the 7th Brigade, a few hundred meters from my favorite carne' de llano restaraunt. It sucks though.

Why? Why the f*** did they have to hit Tierradentro? I love that tiny place and the people there...quiet, friendly, peaceful. Nothing up there but some old tombs. To think of them getting bombed all night...I just cannot comprehend. And they were just starting to get some foriegn visitors in there.

Please people, read carefully... it's NOT the Tierradentro with the archeological sites in southern Colombia. It was a corregimiento of a town somewhere in the Cordoba province.

Robert Jorge While Miami is Dangerous in certain Areas I have yet to see any massive car bombs exploded in Miami like the one that went off a few weeks at that Military school in Bogota or any Large Bombs that were exploded like the one that went off in the Zona Rosa or that Real Exclusive Club in Bogota maybe 3 Years ago where many were killed or wounded. We(miami) have shootings and homocides like any large city but not the scale of Violence (car bombings)seen in Colombia. Many Homocides in Miami are Drug Related and take place in Overtown, Liberty City and Opa Locka. Most of us Miami residents know enough to stay out of these areas after Dark. Not to say we don't have Murders in other areas also like South Beach(where a few years ago a 19 yr old colombian girl was raped and murdered), Coconut Grove, Coral Gables and Kendall because we certainly do but in Smaller numbers and for different reasons(jealous husbands and boyfriends, Domestic Violence, carjacking and Rollex Watch Hijackings(coral gables especially). I also could catch a Cab in Miami with 99.9% certainity I would get to my destination safe and unsequestered, my biggest problem being a Miami Taxi driver may run a long route to up the meter. I feel safer here in Miami without a doubt. BTW, a Year ago or so when Bush visited Cartagena there were so many active threat warnings they practically had to encase him a Bubble on the Waterfront to minimize risk exposure. It looked like the 6th fleet off the port of Cartegena during his visit--more Navy Ships then Fish in the Bay! LOL! I doubt if any US Politician was at such a High risk as Bush was when he visited Colombia. I'll bet its his last Colombian visit! LOL

Cartagena doesn't seem to be a target Like Peter has said, that would be extremely rare indeed, but it's not impossible for visitors to face any other risks there.

Bombings in general are overall still rather rare though, and most of the recent ones have been far too small to cause significant damage (in lives or property, though obviously all life is valuable and any amount of property damage is still an expense). At least thus far.

As for the crime situation in Colombia compared to that in the States...I'm in relative agreement, in that the dangers that occur in Miami and elsewhere *tend* to be lesser than those here, and obviously the police response times and available manpower can't be compared at all (some people criticize "militarizing" urban areas, but there's still a huge deficit of policemen per capita in Colombian cities, by first world standards. If anything, much more presence is still needed).

If *maximum* security is your only concern, then the answer is simple: don't come to Colombia and stay in your first world country or, if you do, then stay put.

roofus That is sometimes true, but it varies vastly depending on the Colombians involved, the crime involved, the police involved, and obviously the criminals themselves. There's no universal rule such as that.

Miss Colombia is different then a Bush Visit remember The Miss Colombia pagent is one of the most beloved events in Colombia whereas a visit by Bush(one of the most unloved), probably in Contemporary times, the most disliked American President(in the americas, per the news polls, not my opinion) are two different horses. One generated immense controversy whereas Miss Colombia won't. Not to say some of the Looney Tooners wouldn't like to disrupt the event for attention knowing many Politcians and Business leaders will be in the Audience.

the average time response for police is around 30 minutes if the that is not so much different than in the USA. I have witnessed much longer response times. Remember: the job of the police in the USA is not "TO PROTECT AND SERVE" as advertised on their squad cars, but their job more usually is cleaning up, beginning the chase, taking statements, etc.

Peter Miami I didn't have to do "research", I lived in Miami before ... actually Homestead. I had only 3 friends when I lived there. 2 are now dead because they were murdered. One was killed when his gun store in Naranja was strong armed robbed, and the other was murdered in his house on News Years Eve 1997 / 1998 by a house guest.
Nowhere in my post did I claim "Miami was more dangerous than Colombia". I would personally feel much more comfortable walking at 2am on a regular street in Villavicencio than in a lot of places in Miami. I wasn't referring to terrorism or kidnappings. Just street crime ... beatings, robbery, car jacking, etc. If you require names of areas in Miami where I don't feel safe walking at night; no problem: Naranja, parts of Florida City, Cutler Ridge, Goulds, South Miami Heights, parts of the Grove, parts of Perrine, etc. I have had guns pulled on me while stopped on US 1 near Univ. Miami because I honked at somebody. Anyway, I was just expressing the way I feel, not rattling off statistics. I am not stupid, and of course really bad things can and do happen in Colombia. From the way your post was written, I would interpret it as you making fun of me. I wonder why more people don't post comments? I am glad it is so funny. Hope my response "was good." Talk to you later. Rob
