Depends on the airline. Call them and find out.

houstongal says on Dec 25, 2007, 12:59:

Yup, depends on the airlines. Go to their website and you should find their baggage policy. If you're a elite frequent flyer on the airline or their partners, you are allowed more carry-on and a higher weight limit on your checked bags.

Careful with gifts....better not to wrap them. And don't forget the rule on liquids. What a pain! Safe travels to you!

They never weigh my carry on bags. It was more of the size. I guess it is up to the airlines discretion. I used American.

I'm flying AA, I'll look it up, but thanks!
Last time I flew Avianca and they actually measured my carry-on!!
I think it's reverse discrimination! They saw my pasty white ass walk up and
they said "let's fuck with the stupid gringo!"......lol

miamimike says on Dec 25, 2007, 17:43:

NYB --They did the same thing to me on Avianca, after I boarded the plane, they made me go back and check my Carry on. Meanwhile, other passengers, mostly latinas(os) were allowed to carry on whatever they wanted. One lady brought a large boxed(3 ft by 4 ft) Crib set that the Flight Attendants stashed in the area where they prep food. I had to check my 1 ft-2 ft carry-on. No more Avianca. Left 45 minutes late. Another Latina passanger lugged aboard a Microwave-no problem either.

Yeah, it seemed a bit much when it happened to me.
I'm easy going and didn't think anything of it, but now that
you're telling me there's a pattern.... Can you say discrimination suit?

Straight from AA.com......Boring but useful.....
In anticipation of increased holiday travel to and from certain cities in Latin America, Mexico and the Caribbean, American Airlines and American Eagle are implementing policies limiting the size and number of checked bags, as well as prohibiting checked boxes.

To provide the best customer service possible and to consider the needs of all passengers, there are limits on the amount of baggage that can be carried in the cabin and cargo areas based on the size of the aircraft. The limits will be in effect between Dec. 1, 2007, and Jan. 10, 2008.

For the destinations identified below, boxes† and excess, overweight (more than 70lbs.), or oversized pieces will not be accepted for transportation.

Passengers will be allowed to check a maximum of two pieces which must be within the size and weight limits as follows (linear measurements calculated by adding the length, width and height of an item):
1st piece - up to 62 linear inches and 50 lbs.
2nd piece - up to 62 linear inches and 50 lbs.
Carry-on items may only be up to 45 linear inches and 40 lbs.
Bags weighing 51-70 lbs. will be accepted upon payment of $50 USD fee per bag.

In Sep. I flew LAN from MIA to BOG and not only did they measure the carry-on, they also weighed it.

nueva york bombero says on Dec 25, 2007, 19:00:

Do you look like a gringa?

adrimm says on Dec 25, 2007, 19:27:

I flew on Continental this last trip, and I think the measuring depends on what kind of carry-on you have.

My carry-on was measured one way (the larger roll-aboard type), and the other way I took a daypack, which was not measured.

The previous trip the US-Colombia legs were on Avianca, and I had my daypack both ways as a carry-on, it was not measured (edit: should note that it was stuffed full as it was my only luggage).

No liquids, nothing sharp.. I kept contents down to smaller but heavy gifts (ie. hard-cover books). My carry-on is often quite heavy, but I make great efforts to try to carry it lightly and no one weighed it.

nueva york bombero says on Dec 25, 2007, 19:41:

No one weighed it? You must look Colombian!!!
There's definitely a pattern here! I'm documenting!!!

sometimes I think there are no rules... when on every plane you see people shovin, compressin, smashin... everyone else's stuff in order to get theirs in the compartment too.

They need to make more stringent rules... then, it would speed up boarding and de-boarding de plane

and, thank you.

lpdiver says on Dec 25, 2007, 20:34:

You would think they would make a stringent universal aviation suitcase and require it for all flights.

Fly nekkid and eliminate the TSA lines works as well.

NYCB--No doubt Avianca uses SUBJECTIVE Criteria for who gets their Carry-on Luggage scrutinized and who doesn't! For the Gringo, bring out the Template to see if your luggage fits inside it! If it doesn't, go to the back of the line! LOL

donmia says on Dec 26, 2007, 10:31:

we just tried to ship a flat panel t.v. back to bogota on Avianca yesterday. don't even bother to take them to the planes. Avianca charges $80 for being overweight and then another $80 for being oversized. I called American Airlines (I'm flying them in a few more weeks to Bogota) and the deal was $100 for oversized and $50 for overweight.

After going round and round with all of them, both said "oh, and if we break it - tough, not out problem" So, I'm shipping separately with insurance and additional taxes door to door. it's a little more expensive, but it's better to actually have it get there.

I'm especially cautious because it's an LCD screen and they are supposedly extremely fragile. It's well packed, but why take a chance. Problem is I've been told the plasma won't work in Bogota's altitude.

Anybody got any better ideas? Or know of any tips?

orestesdd says on Dec 26, 2007, 13:48:

For instance, American Airlines allows only one carry-on luggage under 40 pounds, and two suitcases (no more than 50 pounds each) to be checked in.

goin_south says on Dec 26, 2007, 14:22:

I believe just last June, to Bogota, I brought two carry-ons on AA. no extra charge. and so did just about everybodyelse. maybe they've changed, just recently?

and, thank you.

I prefer to travel only with carry-on bags but want to bring some collapsible hiking poles on this trip. On the TSI site, they are not mentioned; the closest item is ski poles, which are prohibited from being carried-on. Does anyone have hiking pole experience in their carry-on luggage?

adrimm says on Dec 26, 2007, 18:26:

hiccup.

goin_south says on Dec 26, 2007, 18:35:

I'd say some people look at it the other way, adrimm. Liberated-carry-nothing-on-check-everything.
I've probably flown 50 to 60 times over this life so far, probably more.. and only two, maybe three times, did my luggage not arrive with me. I think it's one of the pityful sites of flying, watching all the old and slow out-of-shape people trying to jam and cram their carryons into the upper luggage compartment - especially when it's compressing mine into smitherines.

And, I feel better physically, too... not lugging that stuff around.
Small, light bags; not a problem. People with two that look like they SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHECKED... and can't find a place for em in the overhead... HOLDING THE PLANE FROM TAKING OFF... yeah, you got it... one of my pet peeves.

LIBERATE YOURSELF! CHECK EVERYTHING!

and, thank you.

houstongal says on Dec 26, 2007, 18:56:

What about the women who put so much in the carry-on roller bag that they can't lift it into the overhead bin?! That really gets me ticked, especially when there is no viable male to help her. Poor flight attendants end up helping.

houstongal says on Dec 28, 2007, 07:58:

C'mon lpdiver.....is it really their job to lift heavy bags, which the owner couldn't do herself, into the overhead bin? Usually these bags are also on the large end of the carry-on spectrum. I've repeatedly seen this happen.

now oversize is another thing. Of course as a gringo I am held to the strictest standards on weights and size. The airline has a right to enforce their own rules...no?

That's great lp! I always drag my suitcase to my bathroom scale before traveling as well. But then I also know that if I can't lift it, it's beyond the weight limit.
