Goin South: EEUU The double letters represent plural use. Like FF.AA (Fuerzas Armadas) for Armed Forces.

Yellow fever required by USA or Colombia. Not not any more., I don't think so. But I would consider one if a visit to the Departmentos de Choco , Amazonas or a couple of the more "tropical" areas.

when you get any extra shots, it is cheaper to go to the colombian red cross building in bogota since the medical exam doctors will charge over double for the same required shots.

you can do this the same day you have the medical exam in bogota.

The only mandatory vaccination I had to get BEFORE I left for colombia was Yellow Fever. If I didn't get it before I left.....or if i got it within the final 3 months of my return, then I would have been locked in quarantine until three months after the date stated on my vaccination certificate.

The nice lady also strongly suggested I partake of Polio, hep a, hep b and maybe hep c if i was going to be living in crowded unsanitary conditions. I also had to get a Tetanus booster and an innoculation for Rhubella - which i thought only chicas had to worry about.

Turns out that 3 days before I'm supposed to fly back, I get EVIL WICKED BAD food poisoning from San Andreas. I get on the plane in Bogota with a fever, sweats, high temperature, vomiting and nausea.

I land in Sydney, the Customs guy takes one look at me and locks me up in medical quarantine anyway.

The one ray of sunshine would be that after 7 days of trying really hard not to fart or vomit, I'm released and I've lost 15 kilograms (33lbs)..........I have to admit......I look REALLY GOOD!!!! :D

Take care

ok.....the above web site lists Hep B as one of the requirements. Hep B is a series of 3 shots given over a span of 6 months ( initial, 30 days after the 1st, and 5 months after the 2nd). There is an excellerated schedule for the vaccine, but it still takes several months to complete and is usually only used for exposure cases. SO, does that mean the Colombiana's only need to have started the the vaccination series?..... they aren't actually required to FINISH the series before they get their visa are they?

Timeforachange: where do you live? Yellow Fever is not a requirement for Colombia unless you are arriving from an infected country.

Hi Azul,

Colombia is listed as a Yellow Fever affected area. If you travel there without a yellow fever vaccination, you are unable to enter this country without being quarantined.

The best place to find out more about this would be:

Ah...you live in Australia. It's different in the US, we aren't required to have any vaccines much less Yellow Fever when traveling to Colombia from here. But that's good to know if I ever head to Australia via Colombia (probably not going to happen).

Hey Goin-South. I assume you are asking this question, because you are anticipating the upcoming fun when your beloved gets her package 4 from the consulate. I don't know the specific shots or immunizations they give the beneficiaries. My wife has no idea what they were. But, it took only one visit for the actual shots, and she got one in one arm and two in the other. She was quite sick the next day. She was also warned not to get pregnant for 3 months after the immunizations. Anyway, when your beneficiary gets her paperwork for everything, including the shots, the doctor is designated (by the consulate) and will know what she needs to get. I don't know what all the immunizations were for, but hepatitis was one of them. Unless you are just curious, I wouldn't worry about what she will need to get - the doctor will know what is required.

when I worked at the Krome Detention Center, the Requirement there per US Public Health Service required us to Test the Adults only for TB. Children under 12 really got hammered with shots(including babies) got a TB test, Polio Vaccine, and TDP(tetnus, diptheria, pertussis) Vaccinations. Only way they could forego these Vaccines and TB test was if they had a Current Vaccination record from their home country with them and of course 99.999% of the time they did not. Any Female over 10 years old also was tested for Pregnancy via a Urine test. We had a 12 yr old who came in Pregnant so even though someone may not look old enough to get pregnant, the look test did not suffice. This way(if the immigrant came in already pregnant and was NOT tested) an Immigrant could not claim she got pregnant while in US Detention, not an uncommon ploy, to get released to the street by claiming a Detention officer got her pregnant.

Vaccinations required by the US Embassy, visa section, Bogotá:

Mumps, measles, rubella, polio, tetanus and diphtheria toxoids, pertussis, influenza type B (HIB), hepatitis B, varicella, pneumococcal, and influenza. An approved physician may certify that it is medically inappropriate for a visa applicant to receive one or more of the listed vaccinations. Only a physician can determine which of the listed vaccinations are medically appropriate or inappropriate.

BTW since a K-1 visa (fiancee visa) is not considered an immigrant visa I THINK vaccinations MIGHT not apply to a K-1 applicant. However, he/she WILL be required to have them when filing for an adjustment of status after marriage. IMHO it would be cheaper to get what is needed in Colombia rather that the USA. If the above requirements are current and have been met you can furnish the examining physician a certificate from the physician who administered the immunizations.

Neither the K-1 nor the K-3 are immigrant visas but the vaccinations are required for both. The good thing is that when you AOS you can use the same medical exam that she already had in Bogota.

I've gone to Colombia without extra vaccinations (yellow fever, etc), and wasn't hassled or asked for them at all upon entry.

I stayed in Bogota the whole time. This next trip I plan travel more extensively (Ie Amazonas )and will be getting the works prior to leaving.

Wonder why the disparity exists between goverment agencies? Add MMR(forgot) to my post of vaccines given but otherwise US Public Service gave no other vaccinations and the Adults recieved nothing but a TB Skin test and now only receive a chest xray. In many cases they are released to the street,,,No proof of vaccine,,,

Yesterday, in the mail, from the NVC, I got a copy of packet #4 with the date of my wife's interview. The vaccination requirements were listed thus;

Mumps, measles, rubella, polio, tetanus and diptheria toxoids, pertussis, influenzae type b (Hib), hepatitis B, varicella, pneumococcal, and influenza.

Hope this helps.

Respectfully, Gator. I don't understand, why a K-1 wouldn't be considered an IMMIGRANT VISA.

But, if we can get her this far without (the immunizations), then I think I can get her past the AOS, with same.

"WHY" is a whole 'nother discussion.
(Neither of my kids have ever been immunized; they miss less school than all the rest, as for sickness....They are almost NEVER SICK.)

Here is the deal, Goin South. The K visas are non-immigrant visas because they are for a limited duration and do not give the holder the right to reside in the US permanently. However everyone knows that someone going to the US on a K visa is eventually going to AOS in the US so they are processed by the Immigrant Visa Unit at the US embassy in Bogota. She won't have to have all the shots because she is an adult but if you think she's going to be able to get away with not having ANY of them, you're dreaming. It's either their way or the highway so if you want her here you better be prepared to play ball.

What a Setup--come legally to the US, you need all the Vaccines; Come Illegally to stay and US Immigration lets you out on the street even after a lenghty detention without even as much as a TB Skin Test(chest x ray only). Saw this happen thousands of times at the Krome detention in south Miami. What a nice setup this is! Healthy also,,,

I hear you Miamimike. And I would wager the illegal let out at Krome also works after being released. In 4 days, my wife will have been in the US 5 months; and still can't legally work, has no soc. sec. #, can't drive, is waiting on a state ID ... is basically stuck.
