What you won't hear in the media...

70 people were killed (murdered) during this years Feria de las Flores.

Source: My attorney belongs to a large association of other attorney's in Medellin and was given this information from very reliable sources within their association while attending a conference.

In addition to the above my attorney told me a dear friend, a fellow attorney, was murdered last Saturday. The attorney who was murdered was a very likable guy with no apparent ties to anything sketchy. My attorney also states crime has risen significantly in the last year and advises all to take precautions.

That is absolutely true, in reality crime has risen 50% over last year in most of Colombia, according to people that I have talk to and reliable sources are saying, Uribe created a calm before the storm, the band aid that he put over the gash can no longer do, it has become infected. The same problem that existed before his terms are evident now and have gotten worst, you can't sweep have of the disfranchised population under the rug, four million internal refugees and growing and the military complex keeps on growing along with the power elite getting richer. and you want four more years of the same?

Well whenever an attorney is whacked in Colombia the first thing the other attorneys tell other people is the guy apparently did not doing anything wrong.

The reality in Colombia is that most attorneys are very adept at stealing more money with their coats and briefcases than many crooks do with guns. And they are all "nice" guys.

My father is an attorney and a good one, plus honest, and I cannot tell you the number of times he has been offered huge payoffs by the opposing legal staff when in cases. Especially those of the wealthy factory owner who has screwed someone out of a pension.

I see a lot of positive changes in Colombia but I see poverty has increased and there are more petty crooks wandering the streets, even here in Manizales.

Rikito says on Aug 12, 2009, 05:45:

I saw this in Colombia Reports this morning, but 70 people and it is not reported all over the world? Please.

From the article.

Following the appearance of alleged paramilitary pamphlets, 97 people have been killed and two disappeared in acts of "social cleansing" throughout Colombia, independent investigation center CINEP has announced.

According to investigators, pamphlets threatening to kill prostitutes, drug users and "weirdos" appeared in almost three-quarters of the country. In regions where the pamphlets were most widely distributed - the capital Bogota and the departments of Norte de Santander, Cordoba and Boyaca - the pamphlets were followed by higher numbers of reports of disappeared or murdered teenagers, prostitutes and people from the GLBT community.

The study showed that people from poor neighborhoods are most vulnerable to threats, forced disappearance and murder by the alleged paramilitary groups.

"We are very concerned that the use of fear and threats has become a tool for social control," CINEP executive Jorge Julio Mejía told Caracol Radio.

The threatening pamphlets appeared first in Medellin and appeared later in dozens of other Colombian cities. Authorities previously blamed the FARC for spreading the threats, but NGOs say paramilitary groups are responsible.

Colombia Reports is looking at this and has some problems with the numbers and who is reporting them. They were told was told 80 were murdered. But there is no confirmation anywhere. For now it is just consider it "chismes".

Haddeman says on Aug 12, 2009, 08:13:

Things are indeed getting more violent here in Envigado and Medellin but the reasons are more complex than Mr Ferran alludes to.Recently many leaders of the Oficina de Envigado have been apprehended and are comtemplating their crimes in Itagui prison. This has left a power vacuum and various groups are using extreme violence to wrest control of the said lucrative organisation.
Sure poverty and unemployment play a big part in crime but it is not the only factor.Do all unemployed people go around stealing and killing,do all poor people rob and deal in drugs,of course not.Do richer people not commit crime,of course they do.
It is easy to blame all on one problem but there are desperately poor societies where crime barely exists,as some indiginous societies or those with a strict moral or belief system.
To rob, kill or steal from somebody there is no excuse ,to blame poverty per se is a weak willed, lily livered cop out.

guy goes to the dentist to have a tooth extracted. it's a molar and it's hurting like hell.

the patient is in the dentist's chair writhing in pain and the dentist pulls out his syringe and starts to inject novocain and the buy freaks...'no no no...no needles, i can't handle them.' ok the dentist says.

then the dentist gets out his gas mask and starts to put it on the guy to give him some 'funny gas'...again, the guy freaks out...no no no...i'm clostrophobic, i can't put on a mask. again the dentist concedes. but he tells the patient that the tooth is really impacted and all infected and extraction is gonna hurt like hell. the patient says to the doc, i'm afraid of needles and i'm clostrophobic, what can i do.

finally, the dentist says, wait a minute.....he goes out of the room and comes back with a pill............can you handle taking a pill, he asks the patient. sure, he replies, what is it? it's viagra, replies the dentist. that's interesting, i didn't know that viagra was used for pain, the patient replied.

it's not, said the dentist, but it'll give you something to hold on to when i pull out that tooth.
