what sports in Colombia?

Well, besides football - or what the non-Latin world calls soccer - what else is there?

Do women play football, or any other sports?

Specifically, can I find some squash courts over there? In which cities?

Yes you can find squash courts in Medellin and I am sure Bogota, perhaps elsewhere. Of course you can find golf courses, tennis courts, the sport of cycling is very popular. Equestrian activities are also popular. Baseball is popular on the north coast. Locals will be able to fill you in on other sports.

By the way it is only the US that uses soccer I believe, well perhaps Canada. The rest of the world Latin or not uses football or the local word for football.

sports galore Aside from fútbol, there is tennis, basketball, baseball (on the coast mostly), squash, vollyball, bolos, skiing, and parapente. Como se dice parapente en ingles? Para Gliding I imagine.

Squash is played pretty much everywhere...or at least in all major cities.

I played high school and club soccer in Canada and it is called soccer there to distinquish it from what we call football. Of course Canadian football is played with 12 players, only 3 downs and a bigger field. Along with a few other small variations it is very similar to American football.

In Colombia apparently women don't play soccer because my stepdaughter's family (grandparents, aunts, uncles etc) in Colombia is scandalized that she is playing here on a club team for 10 year olds.

Soccer for a reason It's called soccer because when people use the word football, people only think American style football....and that is the obvious reason why in the US, it is called soccer.

While soccer has grown in popularity in the US, it is no where near as popular, and will NEVER be any where near as popular as American style football.

American tend to like games where there is a lot of scoring. And soccer, will never qualify as a game of that caliber.

Real football 'what the non-latin world call soccer'...?!!?
It is only the North Americans who call it soccer, because they have their own game which they call football (don't know why, they don't use their feet much!!). If you say 'football/futbol' anywhere in the world outside of North America people will think you are talking about real football, the most popular sport in the world (by far), and the one which predominantly requires the use of 'feet' and a 'ball'. The other game is called 'American football' basically because it is not really played anywhere else except the States and probably never will be. So there.

Hello! There is also a version of the game played in Canada called Canadian football. In fact the first college football game took place between Harvard and McGill University in Montreal.

Last week a high school football team from Monterrey, Mexico came to Texas to play a local high school team. They won 27-24 on a last minute touchdown.

Actually it is played elsewhere I´ll concede it´s no where near the popularity worldwide of fútbol but American Football is played elsewhere than the USA. Canada, Europe (NFL Europe), Mexico (ONEFA) and I have not yet been to a country where I couldn´t find some interest in the sport. There´s flag football teams in Medellín, Manizales and Cali as well.

Volleyball I played volleyball all through highschool and it seemed like all the hispanic chicas always played better and were more natural at it. It seemed to me like volleyball was pretty popular outside the U.S. The only thing I don't like is when I go to the park and see all the hispanic men playing, because when you know how to play "regulation" volleyball, you can't stand to see someone PUSH a volleyball past the net and call it a SPIKE or CARRY a ball in a set up for a spike and call it a "SET" That, plus the fact that any time I played with any kind of guys, they could be the most horrible players, but would not give me the ball thinking I wouldn't make the point. I hate that ish... but when it was my turn to serve or I finally got a chance to spike... they new the real deal...

Futbol, fotbol, football is played all over the world, the most popular sport globally, no doubt. Nobody calls it 'soccer' except the gringos. American football...isn't that the game where all big sissies run across a field with a papaya in their hands and kick each other instead of the 'ball'?

kat1 Cinco huecos was a street game played with coins (money) each hole had a number and when you threw the coins into the hole (about one inch deep by 1 inch in diameter--and there were five holes) you multiplied the amount of coins that went into the hole by that hole number until you reached the number that was previously agreed and whoever got that number first kept the money but it had many rules which after so many years are not clear to me anymore.

utopiacowboy says on Sep 23, 2005, 17:51:

You're right, Tinto. The question is how much did these early games resemble football? Both McGill and Harvard on their web sites claim the first college football games occurred between their respective schools. Here is what Wilkipedia says about it:

"The first match generally said to have occurred under English FA (soccer) rules in the USA was a game between Princeton and Rutgers in 1869. Many people consider this to be the first US college football game. However, the rules under which they played have changed substantially since 1869. In fact, at the time, most US university teams used rules which were closer to the soccer rules, although this was soon to change.

Modern American football grew out of a series of matches between McGill University of Montreal, and Harvard University in 1874. At the time, Harvard was distinguished by the fact that it played the "Boston Game" — a running code — rather than the kicking games favored by the other US universities. This made it easy for Harvard to adapt to the rugby-based game played by McGill and the two teams alternated between their respective sets of rules. Within a few years, however, Harvard had both adopted rules closely resembling rugby and had persuaded other US universities to do the same. In 1876, at the Massasoit Convention, it was agreed by these universities to adopt most of the Rugby Football Union rules. However, a touch-down (as it was also known in rugby football at the time) only counted toward the score if neither side kicked a field goal. The convention decided that, in the US game, four touchdowns would be worth one goal; in the event of a tied score, a goal converted from a touchdown would take precedence over four touch-downs."

So it sounds like Princeton and Rutgers played football (soccer) and McGill and Harvard played a modified form of rugby which was perhaps the basis for American football. Interesting, very interesting.
