What spirits do you like to drink?

I am Scottish and thought until very recently that nothing could beat a Scottish Malt Whisky such as The Balvennie or Dalwhinnie. However I have recently tried Spanish brandy from Jerez - fantastic!!! Mellow, smooth and rich - beautiful. I have tried and liked the rum from Cali but for me, now, it has to be Spanish brandy.

What about you...?

I've had the worst hangover of my life on Colombian rum.

With regards to whiskey- I've always preffered Irish to Scotch.

bad hangovers? one only needs ONE tequila hangover to never touch the stuff again.

when it came to spirits, i liked clear ones...vodka,gin and after twenty years in colombia, of course, rum. kalder...i think it's a matter of quantity. i've pretty much always been a drinker, but not to drunk. now, as age takes over the driver's seat, i find a drink quite rarely. pity. it's not that i don't enjoy it, the desire seems to just have waned. ?? too, who like to drink alone.

i don't know if port is considered a wine or a spirit, but a fine old aged port 50-80 yrs is marvelous for sipping in front of the fireplace.

also, i never got too carried away at making price my reason for choice. just a good, drinkable spirit is good for me.
cheers, mates. bottoms up.

how many of you have actually had 'shine'? now there's an ass kicker. costs about a hundred a quart here. crystal clear and about 150 proof. now there's the devil's swill if ever there was some. it's available about once a year around here if you have contacts. comes in mason jars. wide mouth for fast drinking. the kiss of death.

kalder....don't know how you mix aged port with KP....kitchen duties. for me, it's gotta be the fireplace and the pooch i no longer have. had to leave his shaggy ass in colombia.

Doug I can tell you all about moonshiners. One side of my family were Scotts-Irish Orangemen that came over to the South many years back. My great grandfather was a moonshiner during the prohibition. My grandfather on that side is still living and told me tons of stories about his father and uncles as I was growing up.

Anyhow, I can still get shine pretty regularly (if I were so inclined) heading down to Southern Virginia and see some of the roots. Its good and not too costly. The best shine and most plentiful shine comes from that part of the world. Moonshine millionaires there are in those mountains. You have a steady supply of corn liquor that is popular in the older black communities in Baltimore and Philadelphia, still coming out of Franklin county, Floyd county and other rural parts of Southern VA.Several hundred gallons a week come out of there heading North. The blacks took the tradition from the South as they moved North looking for new lives and work.

I stick mainly to beer or Vodka shots...maybe the occasional Rum. Rare occasions are set asside for Moonshine as its too damn powerful.

Why would a person pay $100 for a quart of shine? You can buy a 5th of Everclear, 180 proof, for $15 to $20 dollars. Is it just the novelty of having illegal booze?

Douglas, Everclear actually might be illegal to sell in Florida? (like 40oz bottles of beer) But it is readily available in most states. We used it in my fraternity house in college. Beer for the guys, and one bottle of Everclear in a 5 gallon McDonalds orange drink cooler for the broads.

I have never heard of paying $100 for a quart of moonshine in my life. That is insane and someone got one broke off in their ass.

I could get probably a gallon and a half for that..but I guess once it makes it away from the source it gets watered down and prices go up. Like Cocaine in Colombia maybe?

Rocco81 says on Jul 8, 2009, 23:01:

Nah Doug the uncut is the best and only way to do it. It is best to run it back through the still a time or two to get a good mellow taste. Its still way stronger than you can get in a liquor store and its a different buzz (so I've heard) Now, If you get a batch right off the still, that shit will take your breath and get you drunk on a very tiny bit.

Run it back through a time or two and you have a nice smooth taste. Still stronger than anything in a store. Or, you can char the inside of an Oak Barrel and let the shine rest for a nice while and soak up the flavor and color and mwalah' you have Bourbon, but that takes longer to get good at.

Oh yeah and always light it before you drink it. Just a tad in a spoon or the cap of a bottle. If it burns a blue flame you have good moonshine. If it has lead (because some asshole used a radiator to cut costs and make 1 batch of shit liquor) then it will burn yellow or red. If it doesn't burn at all you got ripped off and someone cut it with water. Most guys now days are true moonshiners who do it as a hobby or as a family tradition. The old myths of moonshine blindness were back in the big $$ days when a rookie would make a quick batch using bad pipes or a radiator. This would cause temporary loss of sight and if someone was dumb enough to keep drinking it they would have a slew of other problems. Much like a drug dealer though moonshining was in the old days a business. So if you have a bad product or something that makes people sick you never get return customers.

now any of you coming back to florida, bring me a bottle of ron medallo. i'll gladly pay for all expenses. back in the late 80's when there was money, we looked into securing the u.s. licensing for licoreas antioqeno. interestingly, the license had been held for years by some cartel figures. and those butt holes to date, haven't brought one bottle of guaro or ron into the u.s. you figure. they probably figured some way to launder money by not making any. ?

It doesn't get much better, IMHO.

The bottles are pretty porcelain.

Douglas already knows, but for everybody else's information, ron Medallo is sold in Tampa. I bought 3 bottles last night and a bottle of Blanco guaro at a little Colombian liqour store and nightclub that eywed took me to. Suprisingly good prices also. $14.99 a bottle for both the ron and the guaro. They had Caldas also, Crystal, Antioqueno, and some brand of guaro called "Colombia" that I had never heard of. Judging by the condition of the bottles, the "Colombia" aguardiente must really suck - because they looked to have been sitting on the shelf for years.
