What made you start writing in PBH, and keeps you going?

Did you want information about Colombia? or Colombians?
Do you like to share info or give it? or you like to argue and insult or show you are better. Do you often think you know so much about Colombia and post the wrong thing?. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND HERE?.
I am curious to know your stories. thank you.

I started writing here about two years ago. I was looking for information, and I found it to be very interesting and I kept going on because I like to see how others think about my country.
I would like it if you can share your experiences with me and the readers.

christobeldawg says on Dec 12, 2007, 18:21:

Well, I was always interested in seeing Colombia, because of all that talk telling me I should not go there. So I went, of course, for the first time, in February, and have been back 3 times. I discovered PBH, looking for more info, in July, and since then, have learned much, and made many great friends on the site.

admittedly, arriving can feel great too

Found PBH on a Google Search like 3 years ago. I've been to Colombia many times since 1994, have had medical procedures performed there. I traveled extensively around Colombia by Bus in the 90s. My Colombian Fiancee, who Died of Breast Cancer in Colombia in 2000, was from Fusa, so I enjoy keeping up on news/politics from/of the Country. I met her while she was living here in the US, in St. Petersburg, Florida. As a US Taxpayer, I contribute money(albeit a small share) to Plan Colombia, so I like to se what happens to my money. I have referred several posters from PBH to my Bogota Dentist, saving them Megabucks on their work. These referrals were Gratis, I was not payed for it, just trying to help other PBH Posters out. Same with shipping referrals to Servientrega ; when posters ask for a Good reliable service with whom to send packages to Colombia, I recommend this service based in Miami. I have also met a few of the PBH members personally when they traveled through Miami. I enjoy reading the Good as well as the not so Good concerning the Country. This is true of the USA also, of which I am a Citizen. I do a limited amount of small business for profit with Colombia also. I enjoy the Spirited discussions that take place on PBH though as of lately, that doesnt happen often since my Buddy Gomezman doesn't come here much anymore.

I do not write much because I'm a man of love jajjajaja. I just do not have the skills to write but one day I will spend the rest of my life writing poetry for pbh aficionados.
I post here back then and still today because I noticed long time ago the amount of information posted here was humongously misleading because most people are egocentric in nature and they wanted to post or write about what they like or don’t like or about their own personal stuff and unfortunately most of the time they were posting the wrong or false info about Colombia, so I decided to stay here and continue posting to give myself a very hard time during the process. I tell you it’s hard not being political correct, but then again I do not like political correct marimondas.

It's sunny and beautiful outdoors but it's funny and some times educational for some to be here on a sunny day. Guess what? I learned how to spell Colombia in pbh.

I used to travel all over Mexico. Then at work I started to support all of Latin America. This got me very interested in going to these countries. I first started by going to Argentina. I then went to Brazil. I started to hear great things about Colombia and this site was recommended. After some research and reading some post, I went to Colombia during Christmas. That was four years ago. After that I was hooked.

There would have been no way I would have gone to Colombia if this site was not here. Some of the information can only be found here. My Colombian travel plans are based on information found on here.

Peace and Merry Christmas.

I've been writing to Peter's Colombia sites closer to 10 years now. I don't even remember how I came across the first one that I actively participated in, ColombiaExperts...perhaps by accident? I hang out on several Colombia forums and discussion groups, but it's mainly on this one and on Cblog that I spend most of my time. At times it can be several hours a day, or night, since I write from home, not from work, but I take breaks too...
WHY?
Because I'm hooked!
Seriously, it's my lifelong commitment with Colombia that motivates my participation.

I stil have a house in Cali and travel there every so often I can.

Coming up on two years now. I almost invested in Panama back then before I met some fine folk from Colombia. On a suggestion, I made a trip to Medellin. After that I started sourcing information on the internet about Colombia (Medellin in particular) and found PBH. There is alot of good information that is shared here if you can weed through the nonsense. But then again, I guess the nonsense is entertainment for some and this is afterall an open forum.

I find time to visit this site because I am behind my computer several hours a day. With my 21st story office window open, I work as daily life bustles by in front of me. I can see the traffic on Las Vegas and the autopista as well as the Metro Aguacatala. From time to time interruptions occur as an occassional transformer blows out, or the pair of red macaws fly around my building screaching in delight. The scenery is spectacular, the air is polluted and I am content to spend my time here in paisaland........

LORD, lisa, you've pressed my button. about eight years ago, i was holding hands with maarit on 'colombia experts' and some how, i/we, ended up here on pbh and i made my firsts posts then. i think peter was living over somewhere on the santa elena route from medallo to the airport. idon't remember exactly which post of mine it was, but for sure, as all the early ones, it was long and possibly verbose. peter e'd me back and made a comment along the lines of ....."so you know a little about that place" for some reason i think it was something about carmen de viboral or san antonio or llano grande????? hell,i'm old and don't remember, all of the early posts were still reasonably fresh in memory, but unfortunately, due to server changes or what ever, peter tells me they've been lost to posterity. pity. so in answer to why do i come/post here, it's because after 19 years in colombia, it's far more in my heart and mind than my actual birth place. too, my elders are now gone and all that's left is my family and it's extensions in colombia. all of whom i love as my own father/mother and sister/brother.

i entered in the late 80's when medallo was the ok corral and gunfire and bombs, murder and mehem went on 24/7, literally. an hour wouldn't pass without the sounds of gunfire, motos racing away from or to a shooting, people living in fear, the rio medellin a wash with bodies every morning for all to see, from caldas in the south east, to down town. robberies in banks and shootouts from cars, motorcycle riders not permitted to wear helmets and absolutely everyone on edge, not knowing what was gonna go down next, to whom and where.

as the years passed, the trafficos, warloards, corrupted and involved slowly moved their fighting out of the cities and away from the populated areas. not completely, there would still be a bombing in commercial centers, with no one ever expecting it. churches became targets, priests became targets, politicans became targets and the police and military remained targets. it was roughly up to '95 before the worst of the chaos began to subside. and by 97 when i was living in the mountains, alone, the only problem was the economic depression which had eclipsed the country. rich and poor alike were in the same boat. dying , financially, loosing what they had and discovering that there really never was a difference between them--the rich and poor--only imaginary ones. now, all were chokingon the situation and finding themselves together around camp fires--literally--drinking and eating together and finding commaderie together in the tightest financial time colombia ever experienced. in/on a personal level, it was great, being with the previously haves and have nots, sitting around fires with families, children, drinking all night, forgetting the class barriers and all that bull shit and just enjoying each others company and support...each reminding the other that it would change and things would get better....all the time, maybe not realizing it, but enjoying the fact that it had changed, they were on a level playing field and joining together in mutual support.

well, after living through all this, going through hell in my own marriage, separating, divorcing, getting back together, remarrying and after burying my first born on the mountain side of the las palmas road to el retiro...he died in my hands in clinica prado, because the dr. was asleep. and no one came to assist my wife...GOD, after all that, and much, much, more, how could i not be moved to share the REAL REALITY OF COLOMBIA with others. having been given so much from mother colombia's breast, being sustained by her generosity and caring...how could i keep it to myself. the truth is, i'm forced to share the truth and give as i have been given...freely.

yes, i love colombia, deeply and truly and will support her til my last breath. and if it is GOD'S will, i will draw that last breath there, wherein lies my family, my heart and my longing.

Thanks everyone, I love this post. I started the site when I was living in medellin in 1998. I wanted to make a website, and since I was living in Colombia I figured I'd make one about colombia. I wrote a bunch of articles on it and stuff.. a lot of them are still here, if you go back in time:
http://poorbuthappy.com/peter/posts/?page=56

The website changed a few times over the next years, and then at some point (200x) I added a forum, and others started to post. And that's when it got really interesting :)

That's the short story. There are some historical posts you can find in the archives, like this one, when I was thinking of opening up the site:

Archive.org also has older versions of the site archived:

I discovered PBH about the same time I went to Colombia the first time. I lurked for a while and then started posting. I haven't been around for a while due to a myraid of reasons, but have found myself being drawn back. Is the pull from all of you missing me so much? jajajajjaaj. I have had the chance to meet, in one way or another, several PBH's over the last couple of years and appreciate the contributions they have made to my life on various levels.

Because my wife is from Colombia, I have a special affinity for the place. It really feels like a home away from home. When I'm with her family, it's like being with my family. I'm looking forward to retiring there. I may do it when I'm 50. Even though my pension will be a joke, I will have many opportunities to put my teaching skills into action or even do some photography on the side so that we can have a simple, but full life surrounded by family and friends.

I can hardly wait.

Mine is pretty simple.... Colombian mother, I used to go to Colombia every year, but it was always with mom and where she wanted to go... Which was fine, since we always ended up going to different parts of Colombia...

This last trip, I was doing some google searches I think for eye doctors in Colombia... I couldn't contact the family and ask for a doctor, since it was supposed to be a surprise visit... Anyway, one of the searches landed me on PBH and I've been hooked ever since.... I ended up finding out more information about Colombia and am always more up to date with current events then my mom, which really bugs her... But, it's because valueable info is published on PBH...

And my time in Colombia was enjoyable, although it ended badly (my fault), I will always have great memories of my time there, of course tinged with some sadness. Wonderful people and culture, although a little over sensitive by nature.

well, GIB, at least you're not alone....even mierda runs down hill and the best we can do is try and out run it.

I joined yesterday in an attempt to self educate on everything and anything that is Colombia. I visited for 8 days last month and loved it! Mostly in Espinal y Ibague. Purchased my ticket for a 90 day stay beginning Feb. 2008. For me, I want to learn as much as I can to ensure my second stay is as good as the first.

I joined because I was so dam bored....and after 5 years still bored...PBH bring a little excitement to my miserable life....and I only hang around to argue and fight with other posters....never adding something of value

listo

I think I joined last summer (2007). The brother of some girl I dated while I visited Medellin told me about this site. Didnt pay much attention but remembered the name and the whole idea. When I got back to NY I was looking up for sale properties in Colombia and came upon this page somehow.

Im glad I did. Ive chatted with a lot of really interesting people. Plus you get to learn about others and how they see my beautiful colombia from a tourists perspective.

Thanks Peter!!

Just stop deleting my posts about good looking females. jajaja we were getting a litlte crazy there.

I "discovered" PBH as I was navigating the immigrations maze in 2002. I have found good info here, been flamed and told my future bride was a whore, maybe flamed back a few times.

It is my intention to move to Colombia after my wife gets her US Citizenship. I don't mind sifting through the BS for the good stuff.

I intend to be around awhile. I tend to drift in and out depending on my free time. I have a lot more free time when working nights.

I have only ever posted under LPDIVER.

I get great information here. I laugh, get angry at posters and don`t feel like writing any more, I give info, I love watching videos and beautiful pictures of Colombia, I don`t like when people are rude or use foul language.

I have made some friends here. Overall I like PHB very much.
