And older I enjoy seeing the number of cars and especially trucks that appear to be a combination of 2 or more different ones. Of course it is done more out of necessity rather than on purpose.

Land Rovers Where I live there are many people who own Land Rovers. Many are of the 1970 vintage and they prefer the ones assembled in Spain. I did not even know that Land Rover had an assembly plant in Spain.

Micriollo, youll find all kinds of cars except for many of the uber high end ones. There are No Jaguars, No Lincolns, a Porsche is a rare creature although there are Porsche dealerships, No MacLaren Mercedes, No Bugatti, I have never seen a Ferrari...That would be about it.
Renault is the most popular brand in Colombia, and no, not all of them are Renault 4s, I havent seen many of those anyway.

Cars in Colombia Colombia has 3 car assembly plants
1)GM Colmotores which really produces European, Korean and Japanese GM products all under the Chevrolet name. These include the German origin Opel Corsa (best selling car in Colombia up to last year), Zafira minivan, Japanese Suzuki Vitara, and Korean Daewoo Aveo (best selling car now), Optra, among others. Some of the versions of these cars are built in GM plant in Ecuador and Venezuela, this last plant builds the only car of US American origin, which is the Chevrolet Blazer. (The Tahoe will be introduced soon in the market). A few other cars come from the GM plant in Brazil. Chevrolet is the best selling car in Colombia by far, but most models are not of US American origin. Colmotores also produces Volvo double body buses and Chevrolet transport trucks and buses.
2) CCA which produces Mazda, Mitsubishi and Ford products including the Mazda 3, Mazda 5, Mazda 6, the older generation of Mazda 323 and the Ford Ranger. Ford Venezuela produces the Fiesta of British origin, the Ecosport and the Explorer. The free trade agreement with Mexico is bringing us new cars from that market via the CCA like the Ford Focus and Ford Fusion. CCA also produces Mitsubishi 4x4´s, other Mitsubishi come from the Venezuelan plant.
3) Sofasa produces Renault products like the Twingo (second best selling car in country) Clio, Megane and they bring other products from Brazil like the Scenic. Sofasa also produces the Toyota Prado and Highlux, other Toyota products like the Land Cruiser and the Corolla come from Venezuela. Sofasa also produces Japanese origin Hino trucks.

Other cars in the market include Peugeot (some French and some Argentinian built), Citroen (mostly French but some Brazilian built), Volkswagen (mostly either Mexican or Brazilian built), Skoda (Czech built), Daihatsu (Japanese built), Honda (some Mexican and some Japanese built), Hyundai (best selling imported car, mostly taxis and all Korean built), Kia (Korean built) and Subaru (Japanese built). Jeep and Chrysler products are available mostly built in Venezuela.

Luxury brands are rare outside Bogotá and maybe Medellín or Cali but those who have dealers in Colombia include Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, Land Rover, Porsche and Volvo.

Other high end cars are rare but can be seen although most people would associate cars brought into the country independently as drug laundering money. Many of these cars are sports vehicles as so unfortunatelly these type of cars would be considered locally as a tacky mafia car.

There is another assembly plant in Pereira which builds Mercedes Benz bendy buses.

You wanna see the biggest display of luxury cars in Latin America? Go to the movies at the big luxurious cineplex Saturday night in San Pedro Garza Garcia, the wealthiest city in Mexico. The Benzes, Porsches, Jags etc. - I'd never seen anything like it.

There are actually a fair number of old classic cars on the road down her.You will also see a lot of junk cars that amaze you they are even running. You have to pay attention if you are on the highway at night as it does,nt seem to be a major priority to have tail lights ..sometimes not even headlights.Made a day trip to rodadero from BQ yesterday and almost slammed into the ass end of a big truck in the dark that had no friggin lights at all .I don,t know how they allow that on there roads. To me it seems like a place where pedestrians have no rights and a lot of the drivers are loco...heavon knows if you stop to let an old lady or kids cross the street, people here will just lay on the horn.At most intersections its like who ever gets there first has the right of way.Id imagine mexico is much the same.

I liked the Twingos... ... I saw in Colombia this last time I went but I just couldn't believe how expensive cars are down there. It's insane, especially since most people can't afford to buy them. And don't get me started about gas prices. But I did miss having a car, not so much in the city since public transportation is great, but mainly to go out into the small towns outside Medellín. I wish there was a way to take my Jeep Wrangler to Colombia, that would make life a lot easier. =

I was a bit surprised to see a Porsche Cayman driving down Avenida 100 in Bogota. That car hadn't been out very long at that time and you don't even see a lot of them in Houston.

Manonoke28 I feel the same way I was thinking about buying a car once I moved down to Medellin but I think I might just save up a little more money and buy another apartment instead. Prices for cars in Colombia are truly outrages, for example a Jetta that is worth here in the States USD $19,000 will cost you in Colombia USD $25,000 and used. F&ck that!

Don,t know if its acurate or not, but a fellow here in BQ told me that the most the banks here will allow for financing a new car is 3 years. If thats the case its certainly for rich only.Bad enough that they are over priced to start with...renting one is no better and also way more exspensive than in the U.S.or Canada. It does,nt make sense,if anything they should be cheaper...

jinksmiester Banks in Colombia will finance a car up to 60 months in most cases (even used cars) and up to 72 months in certain models, this with 0% as downpayment if you want. Your income has to be over 3 times as much as the montly installment.

European, Asian and some North American cars It's a real international melange of cars, mostly leaning towards small and fuel efficient. Most noteably lots of cars (makes and models) that we don't have in North America.

I always notice tons and tons of Renaults - I believe that Renaults are assemebled in Colombia - you'll also see Peugots, Fiats, Citreons. Asian cars: Some I don't know, Toyotas that I've never seen at home, including some really cute little microvans(different to what is in North America), Nissans, Hyundais again different types, various GM vehicles, Jeeps, some SUVs, and a surprising number of older larger 1950/60s classic vehicles (obviously a healthy population of collectors).

What do you think a 2005 Lexus RX330 (the SUV) with 20,000 miles, all wheel drive, and every other option including remote starting (but no GPS) would go for in Cartagena? And yes, Clavo, I know you have some comment about it being free because it would be stolen - but let's pretend it cannot be stolen! Anyone have an idea?
