what is there to do in Guatepe, Penol, Maranilla, llano grande?

I think I'm going out that way for the weekend. Anyone know of a nice, cheap hotel in Guatape? Or possibly llano grande. Even Maranilla?

What else is there to do there. Besides climbing the rock, or taking a boat ride.

At Guatapé you can swim in the lake, go boating, kayaking, water ski, eat at one of the restaurants by the shore, go up the Piedra del Peñol, go horseback riding, go camping, the possibilities are endless.

thanks mononoke. Horseback riding sounds good to me.

Anybody happen to know a good place to go horseback riding with some nice scenery? I don't want to be limited to riding circles in a field.

mr anderson. all around llano grande you can ride horses. have many friends that specialize in that. maranilla.....great place. need to be on your toes. best to go in the day and get to know the place before venturing out at night. too, go with friends. but like i said, it's great.

llano in general...that's my stompin grounds for many years. if you want to get to know the place, go to gualanday down at the san antonio/rio negro end of los llanos about 2 hundred yards before tutucan and hang out all day. i know everyone there, personally and for many years. there's a pizza parlor--the best in colombia--owned by jorge and mona (deborah) a market owned by ricardo also owns the panaderia. several artists, memo and the chick out back, upstairs, marcella , a couple of antiquarians, mario and mauricio (out back) and the owner of the whole show, gonzalo. everyone knows me personally and will gladly help you do what ever it is you'ld like to do. spend a day hanging out there, ask for the folks i've mentioned by name...tell them the gringo, douglas martin sent you and they'll all to the man/woman, help you. they are a wonderful group of folks and i gladly share them.

out in front of the airport at the rompoe (glorietta) as you go around to the left between the hotel santiago de armas and the estadero is a family (dona ema) and her daughters, who run a horse riding operation there. lucy, carmenza and the oldest...i forget her name...they're all wonderful old friends and will gladly help. i used to live on that finca. just tell carmenza or dona ema i sent you and take it from there. if you need tel numbers, e me or pm me.

Great!

I'm not sure I'm going to stick around llano grande. I was thinking of checking out piedra blanca in the morning, from there heading out to maranilla for lunch, then off to guatape. I'm only going to spend 1 night.

But plans may change. I haven't figured it out yet that's why I'm hoping to get more suggestions on what I can do in each town.

never heard of it.....i lived in my own place.

years ago, the mrs and i spent the weekend several times in an 'intellectual retreat' in llano grande...it's on the por venir road going from rionegro to the airport. damned if i can remember the name. it's a hoopie-poopie kinda place, where shit don't stink and the rich go and hang out. they even have a giant telescope in one of the typical telescope houses, ala mount palamar. they sport seminars in everything 'new age'. nice place, but the folks that went there were the ones i was getting away from in poblado.
