Desideria (Moderator) says on Nov 28, 2007, 08:39:

Yes, the answer is easy: the huge slum of Distrito de Aguablanca, in the east of the city. I don't go there, not even in daylight. It's like a city within a city and should be avoided. There are others, Siloé on the hillside, Terron Colorado too on western hills climbing up following the road to Buenaventura. Basically anything in the east of the city is unsafe, also some southeastern and northeastern barrios, like Mariano Ramos for example.

Also, there's an area very close to downtown Cali, called La Olla, Arthur can tell you about it. He rents apartments there, but the whole area is extremely unsafe.

The paras or whoever is in charge of Terron Colorado do make an effort to clean up and get rid of the shitbags. They issue a list of names every now and then. If your names on the list you either leave or die.
Two of my nephews made the shitlist about a year ago and fled to Bogota after the third person on the list had his throat cut as he answered a knock at the door. They have since returned to terron and I think its only a question of time before something nasty happens to them.
I go to terron quite often to visit in laws but would never go there on my own.

The Mall itself is not creepy at all, it very nice and to be honest, nowhere nearby these lugubrious low-life barrios the video shows...I'm just trying to keep the gringos away from my Cali.
(Except fudgis, he's welcome...hehehe...ho'w the house coming along? Oh woody and susan are welcome too:))) Some others too, but I can't be bothered to make a complete list right now,...)

Tio Gator, Ciudad Cordoba is not too bad, that's strata 3 (I spent some time there during my last visit) but it's surrounded by some very bad places, Mariano Ramos and others.
Aguablanca, yes, of course, except that it's a "district" a conglomeration of barrios, all of them dangerous.

There are horrible, dangerous barrios in every Colombian city I've seen. Certainly Bogota has a lot of places you wouldn't want to wander alone. When I first arrived in Bogota I was exploring around Plaza de Bolivar. As I wandered south a few blocks, almost within sight of the Palace, a cop stopped me and warned me I really shouldn't continue much further or I'd be at serious risk. And I don't look particularly gringo.

"Elmo, that's half of the population of Buenaventura that has taken refuge in Cali....and they're all in Aguablanca".

There's nothing racist about me saying that. It's just statistics. I was responding to Elmo who thought it looked like Haiti. I'm not saying it a bad place because half of Buenaventura has moved in there; just that there are lots of black people living there....in dismal conditions as most internally displaced people in Colombia are. Aguablanca was the pits long before the drug wars in Buenaventura even started.

There's NOBODY on this board who has spoken more about the plight of the population of Buenaventura and the Pacific coast than me.

People from Buenaventura live all over Cali...and many in Houston US too...lots left because of no work or the violence...you just implied by your statment that..hell its got to be the pits because people from BV live there.....and this is not correct, the poor sods always get a bad wrap even when they try to escape the problems, perhaps I read too much into your words?

Desideria (Moderator) says on Nov 30, 2007, 12:08:

Yeah, it was the "fokin'Haiti" in Elmo's post that brought the issue of race into it. I just remembered reading in El Pais about the high concentration of people from Buenaventura and the black communities of Cauca in Aguablanca.

Cali Viejo....mucho gusta.
Walked alot in El Centro..amongst the throngs and masses of people where you can't get into the stores, for the street vendors every step of the way... walked some up there, on the edge of Teresita, where the divide exists, between 'de good & de bad'.... westwardly away from the zoo. then, down... several blocks and along the river...We walked alot of Cali, this time. The weather was perfect the entire time. Unico. chipe chape? hell, yeah! Lookin for Desi, Mona, and Kat1.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Nov 30, 2007, 13:35:

Cali Viejo is one of the restaurants I always recommend to people; I don't do it a lot here because this crowd here does not go to Cali for local gourmet cooking...they've got other interests and being chased by trannies on the sexta is more like their style.

I almost never go downtown Cali except when I have to. I hang out in the south of the city, sometimes in the north too and I like the western neighbourhoods perhaps the best....the ones climbing gently on the hillside.

There are very nice neighbourhoods in Cali, some posh, some just cozy and comfy with little pretensions. I used to shun the north because of the bad air quality but the factories north of city have become better in controlling the pollution and the air does not stink as badly.

I used to love San Fernando Viejo and Tequendama Viejo before they were invaded by commercial establishments and clinics; it was big houses with huge backyard patios, fruit trees, night-flowering bushes and swimming pools, but in these days you can hardly find a family home in those areas. Even my lovely in-law relatives have moved away to places like barrio Bretaña...

Ok, so maybe "Caleño gourmet cooking" was a little misleading. Cali Viejo serves typical, old-fashioned Caleño food. If you grew up with empanadas, tamales and sancocho you'll love Cali Viejo. If it's the new French cuisine you prefer, then you'll be better somewhere else.

Me and my friends, we just pop in for some empanadas.

Then, Medellin. Nice. I liked that better.

Duckworth, that reminds me of the story of an Englishman who went to live in Colombia a long time ago and when taken to lunch by some colombian friends and ordering a bandeja paisa, he asks what the hell is that? When told it was chicharron, made out of fried pork skin, he exclaims, "what an uncivilized place, why in England we would have turned that pigskin into a fine pair of gloves", well after living in Colombia for about 20 years he goes back to visit the old country and while walking past a store he sees a pair of gloves in the window and the owner comes out and says " aren't they nice? made out of pigskin you know" and the visitor exclaims, " what an uncivilized place, why in Colombia we would have made a damn fine chicharron out that".

The cab waited for me and I pretended -while talking to him outside his cab- not to noticed a guy stealing the driver's knife in plain light at 11-something AM & taking away on his bmx. I have no specific issues with Americans, only with the pasty stereotype, which I deem pathetic, not because of the nationality (could be Finnish or German or whatever), but because of the self-deception and and the general, overall sadness of their condition, but everybody is entitled to live their lives as they best can, as long as you are not hurting somebody else.

I have no idea why you had to bring in reindeer products or Lasse Virén to this discussion, except to show me that you knew something about my country evenif ut had no relation to the matter discussed.
