What is the U.S. or Europe, etc. missing that Colombia already has?

Lancer´s post made me wonder what people wish they could have available in their locale, (besides the obvious chicas, of course).

I´d like to see Andres Carne de Res become a franchise, with the first one in Houston! Have you seen their website? Really has a lot of the character of the restaurant, and very well done. The most creative menu page I've seen anywhere also.

Another thing would be a Transmillenio-like mass transit system instead of the so -called ¨High Occupancy Vehicle¨ (HOV) lanes which stop dead if somebody breaks down and doesn´t pull over to the point that the side of their vehicle is just about scraping the barrier wall. Engineers anywhere, anyone? ¨Well, we´ll just build a single lane road and isolate it in the middle of the freeway; run it one direction in the morning and another in the afternoon, huh, Bubba?¨ Jesus...

And let´s not forget some friggin´ bank security like the electronic detection turnstiles that spit you back out into the bank foyer where the armed guard is standing if you don´t pass the exam. Much like the machines in airports except you´re locked in during the process.

I believe they can lock you in when exiting as well, if the teller should choose. Gotta love it.

We've been through this before. En la costa, la palabra es chucha.

Desi1 (Moderator) says on Jan 24, 2008, 04:26:

It's just a local dialect word; the coastal Spanish is uncomprehensible for the majority of Colombians. For 90% Colombians it's either that disgusting animal or armpit BO. I'm doing the gringos a favour so that they won't be making fools of themselves in Colombia.

No, kalder, if you refer to Valle del Cauca, The vulgar word is not chucha, but the very Iberian "chocha". The people on the coast are just mispronouncing it, like they do with so many other perfectly good words....

My hubby and all his family and all their relatives are caleños and all my hundreds of caleño friends and people I know say "chocha", I'm absolutely positive about this. All the years I lived in Colombia and the first time I heard anybody say"chucha" referring to female anatomy was here, on PBH.
But whatever, it's not worth a discussion.

pedro says on Jan 24, 2008, 08:35:

I'd say it's worth a discussion or two.

Though restating the same discussion 20 times among the same participants is probably stretching the point.

ColombianoGringo says on Jan 24, 2008, 09:38:

In central and southern Colombia, chucha usually means armpit odor. Haven't we discussed this ad nauseum?

Yes, it's the same animal or at least very close cousin to the gringo opossum. It's called "chucha" all over central and southern Colombia at least, even if it's official name is zarigueya.

You know, opossums in real life are kind of cute. The garbage can really doesn't do a lot for it.

Robert Jorge says on Jan 24, 2008, 18:45:

I gotta go with Desi on the chucha thing. I had never heard of chucha referring to a vagina until I read Elmo's posts. Then, it seemed to catch on like a trend. When I lived in Miami, it was always chocha. This was used by Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, Venezuelans, Colombians, you name it. My inlaws, one from Valledupar, use chucha as the word to describe an opossum, or slang for body odor - particularly armpit stank or nether-region stank.

To my mind one of the problems with Spanish is the absence of a common linguistic reference point on the important words like cock, pussy and fuck.

Robert Jorge says on Jan 24, 2008, 20:44:

Us English speakers have our words too. Fanny in the US is a cute name for a person's butt. Fanny in the UK is chocha.

Por supuesto every place has its own words but on the basics we agree. If I say, "Nice ass on that chick" I'm understood everywhere in the English speaking world.

Yeah, but how many americans knew what shag means? Well, before Austin Powers that is.

john_stark says on Jan 24, 2008, 21:02:

Like I said there are all sorts of regional specialities but we all agree on fuck. In Spanish you don't even have that. Name me the one words in Spanish that would correspond to cock, pussy and fuck and would be understood everywhere in the Spanish speaking world. It can't be done.

Everything was straightened out after my mom was able to stop laughing.

"the first time I heard anybody say"chucha" referring to female anatomy was here, on PBH"

That's surprising. I've only ever heard 'chucha' refer to that very private female anatomy. In fact, after consulting with a paisa friend of mine over msn just now, he confirmed the spelling of chucha with the 'u', but in Medellin they don't use that, they use chimba or other words, and chucha is more used in that part as 'smelly' rather than, as he explained, other parts where it is female anatomy.

chucha, they use it in ecuador, some of colombia, as well, what Kalder says...

Robert Jorge says on Jan 24, 2008, 22:52:

I have heard chimba also used. Bogota and Villavicencio. Also here in the US by non-Mexican Latinos.
