What is the availability of HDTV in Cartagena....?

I have been told that Direct TV in Colombia does not currently carry HDTV channels. Is this true? If so, is there a cable company in Cartagena that provides HDTV?

I am already discouraged by the scarcity of wi-fi connections. Then I read that Direct TV in Colombia is cutting the games on NFL Ticket in half. Am I really going to have to completely change my life? Ugh.

Your choice. If that is so important to you, maybe Colombia is not the place for you.

I have lived down here for five years now and I am really gettin sick of dip shit jerks making comments like this ....... " maybe Colombia is not the place for you... " ......" typical American.. "

A typical American is a hell of a guy compared to the pussy mama's boys who run the street and Govt. down here .. And up yours, cause I'll any where I want ..

Aaron21 says on Sep 25, 2007, 09:25:

The change in life comment was tongue-in-cheek. I actually posted it so I could get the question on the active list and possibly receive an answer. Thank you for your sanctimonious responses (sans Waterdawg - good one!). Hopefully after the rest of you remove your head from the sand and notice the changes coming to Colombia, you will not be so quick to hypocritically judge. The reason for my question is because I am (possibly) buying another HDTV this week before my move to Cartagena. I was trying to gauge the efficacy of this purchase.

Chelesupercono says on Sep 25, 2007, 09:30:

I don't disagree with you that the average American is a hell of a guy compared to the average low-life lazy do nothing Latino.....but get real dude......YOU ARE NOT IN AMERICA!!! Anyone just coming to Colombia should be more concerned about how to live safely then worried about the NFL games.....on HDTV.....

Aaron21 says on Sep 25, 2007, 09:40:

Chele, you seem to know a lot. Do you know anything about the availability of HDTV in Cartagena? That is the only reason for my post.

I already know how to protect myself and what living in Colombia is all about (except for a few subtleties such as HDTV availablity). I do not need any more self-righteous comments from blowhards who do not even appear to be Colombian. But maybe you are an expert at being a windbag and would like to instruct us on the nuances of the same.

Chelesupercono says on Sep 25, 2007, 09:50:

Aaron, I live in Cartagena and I have never known anyone that has a HDTV......I think you might find more info on the web......I love the self-rightous, blowhards, windbag comments!!! Now that we have your attention welcome to PBH!!!!!

Ah, thank you Chele. I have been here for a while, but usually post at night. I was told two different things by people who live in Bogota (about HDTV availability) so I was checking on Cartagena. I did not find much on the web and was hoping to hear from people who lived there - like you - thanks again.

I am headed back to Cartagena on the 4th of Oct. and will check around for more info...and let you know

I do not believe you can recieve commercial HDTV anywhere in Colombia, but that was last year,, who knows,, maybe. Direct TV does NOT offer HD but the signal is digital and at anytime it could be offered.

Probably satellite feeds will be the first to offer HDTV. I don't have HDTV in Colombia or the U.S. If I were to purchase a TV I'd suppose HDTV would be my choice. I think an xbox 360 and Halo 3 ranks higher on my list.

There are quite a few who have a belief that a person needs to LIVE LIKE A COLOMBIAN, which means on this site, doing w/o some perceived convenience. Like hot water.

Living like a Colombian means adopting their customs and culture and not depravation. It does NOT mean adopting the culture of poverty.

Plenty of Colombians have lots of money and live almost exactly like ANY person anywhere in the world that has the same set of skills. ie: they aren't incompetent and lazy.

Aaron21 I actually saw in the news a few days ago that Colombia is trying to open a new private channel to compete with Caracol and RCN. But one of the things agreed by both RCN and Caracol before the launch of the new private channel was that they must upgrade to HD programming starting next year. I don't know about Direct TV but I have 2 HDTV's with UNE cable in Medellin and all the channels look good although not High Defenition standards obviously... another story is my 360, looks awesome. Hope that helps!

Waterdawg says on Sep 25, 2007, 12:23:

Aaron , DirectvLa has become a sore spot for me and a few others , who still enjoy a few Gringo Bad Habits ! They Killed the Sunday ticket after 10 years of normalcy .. I had started to explore the possibility of a " Real Sports Bar " in Bogota .. Think I migh as well hang it up !

Absolutely correct, I've looked at HD games and DVD's in stores. The colors and crispness of the picture is WAY better than standard screens.

I might take a trip to Best Buy to see the new Halo game. Next thing you know I'll be buying one,, crap,, probably need two.

Maybe hook up the compter, get surround sound and listen to moanmyip.

Ok, thanks Chele, Coffee, Poco, and Dawg. It suprises me that Direct TV does not broadcast a HDTV signal. From what you all said though it sounds like Colombia will have HDTV shortly.

On the XBOX 360 note - you need to see it in 1080p through regular old component cables. It is unbelievable.

Thanks again.

I notice you're all talking about DirecTV...what about Dish Network? Is that an option or not? The HDTV picture is quite clear but I'm satisfied with the regular pic and saving a few bucks. And I understand the importance of getting the NFL to maintain a normalcy to one's life... :)

Aaron21 says on Sep 25, 2007, 18:36:

Does the Dish Network reach Colombia?

tomtom33 says on Sep 26, 2007, 05:43:

Dawg, thanks for the kind, sensitive remarks. I have lived here for 4 1/2 years now. I am from the US. I have nothing against the US, but Colombia is a lot more fun.

When you are in Rome, you are in Rome. I don't watch much TV anymore and gave up on pro sports a long time ago. If HDTV was very important to me, I would live where it was.

rhydewithdis says on Sep 26, 2007, 09:01:

best thing to do, IMO, is set up a media PC that is connected to your HDTV (720/1080) where you download games/tv shows, etc. in HD version (h.264) via bittorrent. Your media PC is connected to your HDTV via DVI (best). Just make sure the video card in your PC supports the resolution of your TV (you ideally want HDTV that supports 1080p and a compatible video card).

On the popular bittorrent sites (try to get into bitmetv.org), search for versions that are maked with h.264 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264) as they offer the best compression and quality from an HD perspective (for now).

They said I couldn't play football I was too small / They say I couldn't play basketball I wasn't tall / They say I couldn't play baseball at all / And now everyday of my life I ball.

Aaron21 says on Sep 26, 2007, 09:09:

Good advice Rhyde. That reminded me that I can DL HDTV shows and movies on my XBOX 360 for a fee. I will have to check the fees on bitmetv.org. Thanks again.

Waterdawg says on Sep 26, 2007, 11:09:

Tomtom ; To each his own ! .. I love Colombia , but lets not confuse it with Rome ! lol

Did not mean to offend you personally , but I am gettin tired to the " Slam America " crap day in and day out . Once again my apologies !
