What is the age limit for Moto Passengers?

Here in Armenia it is routine to see young children riding on a Moto and it gives me the creeps. The part I hate to see, but see it all of the time is the father driving and the baby sandwiched in between them with no safety gear at all. Armenia has a very high rate of Moto accidents and most of the accidents end in death. Where my wife works there have four Moto accidents this year involving employees. All were killed. It is amazing to see these people drive on the road and if you do not do as they want they yell at you, "Give me respect man." Yeah, right.

Is there an age limit in the states?? I´ve even seen toddlers sitting up front on the tank. One reason is probably becuase it´s cheaper for them then all 3 or 4 taking a bus or taxi.

I think most deaths occur from lack of safety gear. Most people do not wear certified helmets and helmets that are just way to big for their head. (helmet should be very snug) Also, I never see anyone with gloves or a proper riding jacket. Unfortunately, proper riding gear is very expensive here.

I'm not sure what the age requirment is, if any.

But, I have often seen gringoloid riding his 50cc moto down Av Poblado with Robi(elsapo) on the back. There may be a law, that says the driver must secure his passanger, as gringoloid and Robi(elsapo) always seem to be holding hands as they zip along.

I have seen families of 4 or more on a single bike. In Giradot, this is very common.

But there has to be some kind of age restriction. It is hard for me to fathom seeing a family of 4 riding down the road for a sunday drive somewhere. If it were me on the moto I would be pissing in my pants all the way home.

...and so it goes

mranderson says on Apr 21, 2009, 12:25:

It´s part of the culture here, they grew up riding on motos with the family since not many have cars here. Maybe you wouldn´t piss your pants if you grew up on a moto.

Look at the last pic. When a truck drives over them like a dried leaf on the road who will they blame? The truck driver? They sure won't except any resonsibility for thier own actions. The people on this Moto have less than a 50% chance of living a full life.

(the picture it shows is not the accident, the accident was on la calle 5 near the parque de las banderas. ive seen the video on youtube of all of them laying there dead, lots of blood, pretty grusome and sad, i also teached at a nearby institue, one of my students was a nurse at the hospital universitario where they took the woman, girl and baby, she said they were all dead on arrival)

Yes..........In the beginning, I believe Robi(elsapo) used to ride on the handlebars and gringoloid was able to secure him in place, by gently holding his trouser belt. Apparently they had to stop this as Robi's(elsapo) long, flowing, bright pink scarf used to blow into gringoloid's face.

Robi(elsapo) looks much happier now, as they zip along on the 50cc moto, him on the back, holding hands with gringoloid, and the long pink scarf just flutters glenty behind them. So cute.

AFTER THIS ACCIDENT last may, Cali has a local law NO KIDS ON MOTOS under 12.. It is being strictly enforced and now when my cunada brings my niece and nephew I must front for a cab (15mil each way) or they take the bus to visit. It has caused a lot of headache for alot of people but added safety for the children.

PCL, it is 10 years old, not 12.....but its not strickly enforced, and if you say it is then you're lying. the helmet thing is more enforced than the child parrilleros. any kid riding on the back of a bike at that age or younger will most likely not have there tarjeta identidad on them so its hard to tell, you can always lie.....the guardas are dicks at there retenes but unless its not a child of 7-8 or younger then you're clear.
also go to Pance, ride with 3 on your bike and 1 without helmet, i'll bet you that they wont even stop you to hassle you and there are always guardas there on sunday or lunes festival......

Paisa/Calena/Luver says on Apr 22, 2009, 16:55:

ahhh then its 10... you are right.. But my cunado will not ride with the kids on the moto anymore. and I AM SAYING that it s strictly enforced because my family will not ride with the kids because of all the transito and road blocks or check points.. If the kids looks young and is on the moto you can bet that the transito and policia is going to give you a hard time. Though I did see a few but not many kids on back of motos but im sure that it was because the parents have no other choice.

Piling the entire family on a moto definitely should be outlawed - especially with the crazy traffic, but not being allowed on a moto until you are 12? : (

I haven't been on a moto since, but when I was 6 years old I had a blast riding on the back with my little 5 year old boyfriend's dad. It was also a bit scary even though he was a very good driver.

Never thought to ask my parents for permission. Now the dad would have to get a release of liability form signed.

An emergency room doctor I knew in my previous digs in Boulder, Colorado says that the best thing that can happen to someone who is involved in a moto accident is to not come out alive. He had seen many moto accidents in the Colorado area and he told me that before nayone buys a moto they should be required to view a clip showing the results of moto accidents. It ain't perty!

Rikito, you are correct. I saw a dude that looked like he was skinned alive from a dropped bike. The crushed heads with brains spilled out are a little disturbing to look at too. Wear gear!

Well divorce ain't perty either. But most of us have married at least once. I did twice! I enjoy my moto and ride it almost exclusively. Luckily in South Louisiana it doesn't ice or snow much, I alternate driving my trucks just to keep the batteries charged.

I am seriously considering riding the bike to Colombia soon.

First, you cannot drive your bike all the way to Colombia. Look up Panama's Darien Gap. Second, what on earth would posses you to ride through Mexico and not think you will get killed or robbed or both? Why not just shoot yourself before you go. It will be cheaper and less emotional on your family. Third, what does divorce have to do with the age limit for riding on a moto in Colombia?

...and so it goes

lpdiver says on Apr 24, 2009, 08:44:

It's not purty either. Can you not comprehende?

I have ridden Mexico with no problems.

Well yes you have to boat or fly your moto from Panama to Colombia.

Additonally the Darien Gap is not Panama's anymore than the Rio Grande is Mexico's.

Excuse me, but the Darien Gap is own by Panama on one side and Colombia on another. No common ground is shared. the Rio Grand is a river shared by both Mexico and the U.S. There is no sole or partial ownership with the river other than the shore line.

Yesterday on the way to the local Mercado I saw an accident that had happened about one minute before I came by. The moto was trying to pass on the right hand shoulder and the car driver didn't see him when the car turned. The Moto crashed and a Tinto bus drove right over his head. The guy had no safety gear that could be seen other than the useless jacket with numbers on it. Well, the good thing is he was the only one killed.
