What does Canada have against pretty colombianas :))

The whys and wherefores of Canadian Immigration make as little sense, or even less, than the American ones. They refuse tourists and let in refugees, a few of whom have shady backgrounds but know the system better. Guess Stirling should sign the wedding papers?

The problems of Canada Immigration are manifold. One, they have local staff vet all visitor visa applications and often conduct preliminary interviews. If the local staff member is a little out of joint with the status of the visa applicant, they will not refer it on to the Senior Immigration Officer (SIO).

Two, if the visitor visa applicant is a woman, and she has been invited by an older male, many SIOs are of the opinion that she is trying to enter Canada for the purpose of entering into marriage or a long term relationship and apply in Canada, and thus avoid the 1 to 2 year waiting time that out of Canada spousal applicants face.

Finally, there are a number of unstated and undeclared factors that SIOs use to determine whether a visitor will get a visa. Has she worked at her present occupation for less than a year? If she has not, then she has insufficient ties to bring her back to Colombia. Same with respect to property and family (it is always a good idea for the woman, if she has a child, to leave the child behind in Colombia - SIOs beleive that the child back in the home country is an incentive to return).

I could go on, but the kicker is that while one, in theory, may make unlimited applications for visitor's visas, unless the unstated concerns of the SIO are addressed, they will be rejected time and time again.

Canada is also none too welcoming to U.S. businessmen. Have never had a problem entering Canada as a tourist but man did they grill me when I went up there for business recently. Others have reported receiving the same borderline-hostile treatment.

As for the beauty queen how did she manage to get a "diplomatic" visa for the USA? Beauty queens are afforded diplomatic status??? Better tell my novia to start winning pageants!

So very true.

Air Canada pilot gets beauty queen? Lucky devil!!!

What really pisses me off is that they allow free entry for Mexicans (I love Mexicans, and hope they continue to be able to walk our cold lands freely) but make it almost impossible for Colombians to visit.

That being said, I don't know a Colombian who has tried applying for a visitor's visa. You'd think they make an exception for the beauty queen! Hell, they would for soccer team.

I'm glad they didn't let her in. Just because she's a frigging beauty queen, she can wait like everybody else. She probably doesn't think her shit stinks either.

I don't care if this was a beauty queen or not... there is nothing new with this article, we colombians have to bear this cross on our shoulders...

my doctor in Toronto told me that at the AIDS conference recently held there, a huge number of 'delegates' applied for refugee status and were thus instantly eligible to all the free medical care they want. Many of them were now his patients. He estimated the cost of treatment at $30,000 each per year. Not including all their living expenses, housing etc of course.

Yet a colombian beauty queen can't even visit.

I think I hate bureaucrats even more than architects.

don't really know details manINred, but I assume they were mostly people with AIDS.

I'm not really saying they should not be allowed in on a humanitarian basis, but why them and not anyone else? Makes no sense to me...
