it seems Colombian congress got nothing to do but bother the good things in Bogotá.
Although I haven´t been in Ciclovia for a while, I do believe the actual schedule is right, from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm. on sundays and holidays. I see lots of people enjoying walking, running, skating, running or just watching.
Nowdays an useless congresman sugessted to change the schedule to start at 5;00 am to midday. what a crap.
If approved, the new schedule will apply to all other cities as well.
They argue that there is some caos for the traffic of cars, and maybe because few rich people had to get out after 2:00 pm to go and have luch out the city.

adrimm says on Apr 28, 2008, 07:25: Ciclovia is one of the best things that Bogota has going for it.. I can't emphasize how much that enriches the quality of life for everyone... Bogota has managed alot of things that other cities haven't and wish they could, this is one of them. If anything the should set up secure bike parking around restaurants on sundays so people can bike to the restaurant then bike home.

Cerealkiller says on Apr 28, 2008, 07:58: I agree with Adrimm. I have never been to the Ciclovia as Im a gym person myself, but I do support the idea of it 100%. Ciclovias should go from 6 to 2 as usual...I can't help but think Mr. Congressman probably has some dealings with the transport union. I don't have the time to look him up but Im sure congreso visible has this person's background somewhere... I cannot begin to understand how anyone (without some interest behind it) can come up such an idea...seriously, the ciclovia is the best thing that could happen for people who cannot afford more expensive types of recreation. For starters, parks are full of prostitutes who leave their used condoms and needles lying there, who would want to take their kids to any park? Clean up the parks, offer better security in public recreation areas and then *maybe* think about ciclovia... dwr says on Apr 28, 2008, 09:19: Webmanco. I don't know if he is in danger. I doubt it. But would you want your photo in El Tiempo as a big Gringo protesting a Colombian affair? I wouldn't. I believe some things in this country are not for us Gringos to get involved with. I believe in low key. I believe that Colombia is a country that demands respect and caution when it comes to visiting or living here.

Cerealkiller says on Apr 28, 2008, 09:19: Alma I'm with you on your argument, but the article implied something to the effect that only poor people care about the ciclovia because they're the ones who use it. I never went out on Ciclovia sundays for various reasons (namely I cannot ride a bicycle and I usually spent sundays recovering from saturday nights or outside the city with family). However, that does not mean I don't appreciate the positive effects of ciclovia, its not just about sport, its about recreation (as I mentioned in my post) and well being. I just don't see how is it that any politician can come up with such a ridiculous proposal without even addressing other issues, it just irks me that people are denied their right to pursue healthier lifestyles because some ass in congress thinks there's too much traffic on sundays. Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives -John Stuart Mill |

dwr says on Apr 28, 2008, 09:21: I take back my comment "I could care less about ciclovia". I didn't mean to take the negative and if I had to vote I would say ciclovia is a very positive thing for Colombia.

webmanco says on Apr 28, 2008, 09:49: There are many unwelcomed participation from foreing countries thru politics, but in this case I am sure this guys iniciative it is welcome by at least 80% of colombians. If got the time I will go and support him. It is always good to support those who do the talk and do the walk, ride or whatever :-) But, I'm going to start making some assumptions here.... dwr says on Apr 28, 2008, 09:55: I agree with you that most people are in favor of his innitiative. Probably more than 80%. My point is public exposure. The innitiative aside, the public exposure in a country like Colombia is something I would recommend avoiding. People in politics ride in guarded caravans for a reason.

Noelito40 says on Apr 28, 2008, 09:56: When I talk to the folks back home about Colombia, one of the things I rave about is Ciclovia. The benefits of this scheme are incalculable, from the simple, more exercise for kids leads to less obesity in later years, to less cars on the roads so less pollution, etc, etc, I enjoy a walk on the novena every Sunday and love watching or playing a game of football while I´m there, so I say hands off our Ciclovia…!!!
