What bank gives you the best exchange rate in Colombia??

Hey guys-

Just looked up Bank of Americas rates on the COP and it says they will give you 2100 to 1. They charge 1% of the total amount. I know Citibank will charge 3% but I don't know the rate they pay. Anyone have any imput on what bank is the best to pull money out down there?

That's an awful rate. Are you sure that's current? Most banks base their rate on the current TRM(representative market rate) which is currently at 2494. BofA should be close to that.

If you live in an area with Capital One branches, you should get an account with them. They don't charge any fees and they give you the TRM rate for your ATM withdrawals.

If you use a Colombian ATM, as far as I can tell, the exchange rates among Colombian banks are all the same.

What you should have is a favorable U.S. bank account that does not charge any international fees. Once again, Affinity Bank in Ventura, Ca. and National Interbank in Indianapolis offer free checking accounts with no international ATM fees, and they can be opened by mail.

Your comment on Bank of America's rate being 2100 to 1 probably means that if you want to buy Pesos in the U.S., that is their going rate. The rate at Colombian ATMs right now is around 2500 to the USD.

I need to check out what happened with the exchange rate my mother in law got yesterday. She went to the ATM yesterday and only got 2448. I was expecting it to be about 2500

Re: ATM/Debit card

You may withdraw funds at any of the over 300,000 NYCE or CIRRUS Terminal machines across the U.S. and abroad. Your daily limit for cash via the ATM is $400.00, the debit POS is $1500.00. We will reinburse $4.50 per month for any fees you are charged.

Affinity Bank in Ventura, CA has been closed. Here's a snippet from the FDIC website.
"On Friday, August 28, 2009, Affinity Bank, Ventura, CA was closed by the California Department of Financial Institutions, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was named Receiver. No advance notice is given to the public when a financial institution is closed. "

The FDIC website is http://www.fdic.gov/BANK/INDIVIDUAL/FAILED/affinity-ca.html

Hope this helps.

I have beeen withdrawing from different ATMs the last 4 weeks and the best I got was 2045 - most gave 2000 - so I don´t know where you can get better rates - I have used Davivienda, Bancolombia among others. Though I am happy that the rate is not 1900 as it was a few months ago when i sent a large chunk of change for renovations here!
