What are the toppings on Colombian hot dogs (perros)?

Man, since I got thinking about how great the hot dogs were in Colombia and wanting to make some here, I forgot what the toppings were. The trouble is, I usually had one of these delicacies after inbibing just a little bit too much so my memory is a bit foggy on the culinary side. I know there were some crunchy onion bits and then some sweet sauce that I can't remember....anyone?

Don't forget the apple sauce !! At least in Bogota.

These people put more strange things on hot dogs than....

GIB is right about the chips. Then there is onion, catcup, tomatoe, and then it start to ge funky with things like mayo and
APPLE SAUCE -- at least I think it is. I looks like it. It has the texture of it and it is sweet. So if it's not apple sauce, than what is it? If you don't believe me, there are a few place near zona rosa and on CR. 15 near---82 or so that sell them in this way.

a real nice topping would be pineapple, i put fried caramelised onions, salsa rosada (ketchup + mayo), ketchup, mustard, pineapple and some potato chips on top

Redundancy I always thought it was kind of redundant putting ketchup, mayo AND salsa rosada. I mean, salsa rosada is ketchup and mayo mixed together, so why put all three on the same thing. I would have to agree with Don Negro, Colombian hot dogs are pretty bad. With all those weird toppings. Can't wait till I get back to the states so I can get some hot dogs with normal toppings (mustard, onion, relish, saurkraut, chili). Mmmm....

salad, melted cheese, bacon, pink sauce, mayonaise, crunched up potato chips or crisps, pineapple sauce and quail eggs (one or two on top).

Say...how do I make salsa cucaracha? That sounds good! Oh man, thank you all. I remember the potato bits now or papas but there was some sweet sauce kinda fruity in taste...orangish...not sure. I don't eat the 2 perros/1000 peso deals on the street...they're awful but some places sell these jumbo dogs with some pretty good toppings. At 4 a.m., it's all good.

Well, I think colombian toppings are the best! I find them much more creative and delicious than anything I've ever had here in the US. I can't wait till I get back to Colombia to have me one of those tasty one-of-a-kind hot dogs!

"The women are the most beautiful in the world there! Sorry Colombia it is true."

GringoinBogota,

Can you ever write a post where you DON'T put down something about Colombia? I, and many people on this board, happen to believe that our colombian women are the most beautiful. If Iceland's women are so much more beautiful, then why don't you go live there?

PERROS……. I don’t usually get involved in these “who is the best BUT, having grownup in New York there is really no contest as to which Hot Dogs are best. Sabretts, the ones sold by the Hot Dog Vendors on the streets of Manhattan with onion sauce, a taste of heaven in the Big Apple. A close second is the Nathan’s Famous Coney Island Hot Dog with freshly made lemonade, on a hot summers day in New York you can’t beat it.

As far as the girls are concerned, Colombia has the best looking ladies in the world, in my humble opinion.

Normal?? William Andrew What is so normal about American style hotdog toppings?? WA. Colombian hotdogs with crushed chips, grated cheese, pinaple, salsa golf etc. are fantastic, although chili and cheese ones in the US are also good. Anything simpler is not good enough for me.

That is really funny I was just commenting the other day on how my friend from Canada always wanted for the 2 of us go to backpacking in Iceland. I don't think I'd find the women beautiful though- I don't like other blondes.
ColX, maybe GIB is not there for the women. Maybe there is actually something else that keeps him there.
I've lived 8 years in NYC and really never have developed a taste for the hot dogs. I don't like em steamed at all, I prefer mine grilled.
I'm not super wild about Colombian style hotdogs either, although the quail eggs are ace! :) But I don't like the sweet stuff. Colombian pineapples seem to be soo sweet their flavor just overpowers everything else. I had the same problem with the pizza down there. I usually went for pincho, chorizo or suiza myself.
If i have a hotdog, I like it grilled over an open flame with mustard, relish, and raw onions. Or possibly instead of relish, cut up bread and butter pickles.
Colombians seem to put mayo on EVERYTHING. To me it goes perfect with turkey, tuna, and some pork products. But I'd never put it on roast beef or pastrami or salami or hotdogs like I see Latinos doing all the time here. In Canada we used to put mayo on fries (as they do in Colombia as well) but I always preferred mine with salt and vinegar.

Mayo on fries?!!!! Ewwwwww, that is *not* a national Canadian thing - maybe local to some provinces. Vinegar and salt, or even gravy (with or without curds) are nation-wide.... but not mayo (*ugh*).

I'm boring, I just like heinz ketchup on fries.

Hey so what happened to Alex anyhow? Wasn't he US navy? Ex navy? Called back in maybe? (oh look, a rhyme!)

Yes Kernow I know salt and vinegar came from you guys. Chips ARE french fries, although I imagine they are much better over there.

I would like to point out also that there IS mayo in a chip butty :)

kernow62 says on Nov 5, 2005, 05:50:

Sacralidge! Mayo on a chip butty, now I know you are mad, butter or nowt.

To make chips you must use potatoes that aren't frozen, that is why most french fries taste different to chips.

Unfortunately the chips in England aren't as good as days of yore because the beef lard isn't used for cooking them. Nothing like going down the chippies on a cold evening with a load of old newspapers and trading them for a heaping helping of chips to munch on the way home. The lard congeals on the inside of your cheeks mmmm! Those days are gone, damn politicians meddling in the affairs of its citizenry!
