You should definately check our Santa Fe De Antioquia. I would hire someone to drive you, and pick you up on the first trip atleast. The main road is guarded by the military, but taking the wrong road out there could be dangerous.

Santafe de Antioquia: this is a beautifully preserved colonial town located one hour from Medellin, the scenery along the road is fantastic, you get to go through the 2nd largest tunnel in South America.

The Oriental Circuit: this is a day long ride that will take you to Rionegro, El Retiro, the Llanogrande area. It's a beautiful area with different towns and stops along the road. This whole area is around the airport.

I suggest that you hire a taxi to do the Oriental Circuit and just take a bus to Santafe de Antioquia

If you are going during a puente, arrange your taxi at least a week in advance. Consider paying for all three seats if you want a "private" cab

You guys forgot to mention San Antonio de Pereira. This is along the same route as Rionegro..Great town to visit during the day or on a fri or sat night to have dinner and partying and there is a shop that specializes in desserts(at least 30-40 different types) .....Although they are not pueblos, I think it is worthwile to visit Envigado and la sabaneta...I remember having an arepa and a awesome tasting pure hot chocolate drink in la sabaneta(tons of little restaurants)..As far as driving, if you know where you a going you'll be alright...Santa fe de antioquia might be better by bus or taxi.... I love Antiouquia

Guatape is a very nice lakeside pueblo. Pretty setting. Lots to do. Bus ride to there from Medellin's Terminal Norte was about 2 hours. Close to El Peñol which is worth climbing for awesome panaromic views.
