What are the general things to know about life in Bogota?

ı'm a Turkish girl living in Istanbul,i'm offered an internship by an international company in Bogota, when i first heard about it,i was really excited and didn't hesitate to accept,i told to my parents that i really wanted to go and everyone is so supportive about it,i'll be there probably about in a month and for eight months,i heard about the issues about safety in Colombia but i'm not feeling scared cause i'm familiar with the situation,Istanbul is a big big city too and if you don't have common sense, you may not survive,it is something you have to know in every big city i would believe in nothing without seeing somewhere myself cause people love to make up stories! So I'm just not worried about my safety in Bogota, but there are other things i really want to know,so please the people who know Bogota very well help me out with my questions...First of all,is it easy to date in Bogota,i already met some Colombian guys, they were cool but i really want to know if they are generally to trust and if they can be real machos...The other thing ,are there so many foreigners living in Bogota, and how about the weather, what kind of clothes should i take with me?Is it ok to be well dressed when going to work(since some say it can be dangerous to be in good clothes but i'm gonna be working in a good company)and what about the food? The last thing i would like to know is if i can find any job for the weekend,i speak very well spanish, french and italian as well i need to support my family so could i find a job in tourism for the weekends?

cool Bogota is great. It is a little cool, but a super city. There is much to do and you will enjoy the experience. I have often thought of moving there.

hmmmm...
i'm scared now!..lol
yes,i know i have to be careful but i'm not scared, cause some stories are the kind that would make people so,what i meant was that putting in people's minds this kind of things makes nonsense, that would just make them paranoids and not enjoy their stayings...but of course it's requiered to be aware of the facts and be careful, that's all i'm saying

I was just there. I was born in Bogota but moved to the states when i was 2. And all my family is still there. I went there in Oct '04 to do a project for my dad. It lasted longer that expected and ended up staying for 5 months.
Bogota is an amazing place. It like a NYC. You can pretty much do whatever interests you because it's all available. Your friends will take care of you as to where and where not to go. Like all big cities, you have to be careful. I was also scared from all the stories i heard but i soon found out you pretty just hear the bad things coming out of Colombia. I promise you you will love it. I even though when i was there "if only i found a good job here i would definatly stay for a while". People there migh not be well off $ but you are very humble and happy, and also know how to have a good time. You'll see. If you need and recomendations on nightlife spots let me know.

From one girl to another Hi,
I am a girl and am living in bogota.
What to wear?
Work stuff, nice is fine, just no flashy jewllery. The women here wear a lot of pretty stuff make of beads ect.

Casual: Jeans, pants, nice tops, bring some longsleeved stuff, singlets are not worth bringing, you can buy them here, but youll only wear them occasionally. Some great jakets are a good idea, a denium one, and maybe a cord one, bring a longer one for cold nights. I have a hooded knee length jacket with a bit of fake fur around the hood...its army green, I wear it with jeans all the time.
Shoues, a pair of flat knee high or ankle black leather boots will work for casual and for work. Some fashion sneakers-(puma and desil are popular here). A pair of nice going out shoues, think comfortable because the streets can be a bit uneven for high high heels, although it does not stop the colombian girls.
Bring lots of bras if you are big boobed, the largest size here is a c cup, and lots of undies if you like breathable undies made of cotton, most of the undies here are made of man made fibres.

As far as dating goes ive been with the same guy for 3 years but if your foriegn its pretty easy to get interest from what ive seen with my friends, its just up to you to pick the right type of guy. There are visa sharks here, and i have seen some girls get taken for a ride by guys that did not really love them. So you have to be aware of that type of character, but there are also really sweet guys here as well.
goodluck, if you want private message me and maybe when you come over to Bogota we can go for coffee.

i totally understand what you mean,i can have fun anywhere besides i have always wanted to see that continent and i may not have the chance again ,so i'm definitely going...I love to joke and take the piss with myself so there is no problem about that too and another thing is that i love freaks or freaky places, they are just better than ordinary, there are so many of them in Istanbul too and it makes it more attractive to me so i guess i will be very happy in Bogota too!

Lovely Turkish people I had a Turkish roomate when I was in school in Miami, where I live now. That was quite a long time ago. He was the best roommate that I had. We got along very well each other. He loved Colombian women in Miami. I am sure that Turkish culture can adopt Colombian very well. Myself go to Colombia almost every 50 days for business and pleasure. Bogota is pretty safer than before. You know the big city, where to go, where not to go. Wherever you go, it is up to you. Here many people like Sidneygirl gives you very practical advise for you. They are good people there. You will love that city like Instanbul that is a pearl of south Europe. As a matter of facts, I am going over there on Oct. 13th. This is my 5th trips to Bogota this year. Adopt yourself into the city and enjoy yourself and learn different culture. You are the choosen one to go there from your country. Good luck and let me know how things are going in the future.

Finally, a chick who posts her pics on the site. Damm. Not just yeah but hell yeah. Wait until Elmo sees these. You are truly a Turkish Delight. Are a lot of the Turkish chicks as attractive as you?

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

well thanks... i guess turkish chicks are good looking but some of them unfortunately until they become a mother cause the society gives them a status of being only a "mother" and a "wife" so they feel that it wouldn't be ok being sexual...

more advices As I red in your post, you speak spanish. I hope you read spanish as well.

I hope this could be a good information for you! Good Luck

OK First, can you trust the Colombian guys that you date? Maybe, like anywhere else. Some of my young Colombian friends are players, some aren't. Some claim that it's culturally normal here to fool around and lie, some say no. Your mileage may vary.

Lots of foreigners? No, not really, but it seems like there are more all the time.

As far as finding a job... DO NOT count on it! Odds are, no, you won't find a job working weekends to support yourself, and you certainly won't make enough working weekends to send money back to your family. Anything is possible, but do not think this will be easy.

Like the others have said, it's a little cold here, but you will have a great time.

One thing I noticed is that there are actually TONS of immigrants in Bogota, but most of them are from other South American countries, and are really hard to spot because they don't dress really any differently, every now and again you just catch a bit of a different accent.

The excpetion to that are the Cubans who stick out like sore thumbs, in looks, dress, mannerisms AND accent :)

Everyone complains about the weather in Bogota, but no-one does anything about it!

Is blue sky the rule, or the exception? This I would love to know.

Blue Sky is rather the exception, and if you get a glimps of it enjoy it, as it would not last very long.

Enjoy it? I usually run indoors when that happens. It may be nice and cool out but that sun is STRONG! I wonder if I could be outside at all in places like Cartagena and Barranquilla.

Crazy Eagle, I'm SURE you wouldn't complain about Bogota weather after Winnipeg weather!
