Western Union Comments solicited

Folks,

Is using Western Union to send modest amounts of money from Canada to Colombia a reliable means?

The intended recipient would be a Colombian citizen.

I priced it from Western Union Canada and the fee appears to be about $10 beaver pelts CDN to send approximately $100 CDN. Does the intended recipient suffer any additional fees when picking up the money?

The fee was slightly different on this end if I make the purchase in Pesos Colombianos which I thought would then deliver to the recipient a nice round number.

And finally, is anything other than a cedula needed by the recipient to pick up the funds at any of the Western Union "outlets" in Cali?

Thanks for your time.

woody

Think you also need to go by the Peso rate at the local office...which you really don't know until the recipient shows up..

dont do it, i had all kinds of trouble with western union, lots of people had problems with them, they cheated alot of people, there was even a big class action suit against them

go with money gram , cheaper and better service.

The site here in Canada, appears to allow me to purchase, say, 200,00 Pesos from this end. I am probably going to do this at least once just to experience it. Just trying to get a good wide angle sight picture on the situation before the C note or so vanishes into cyberspace.

I tell ya what woody, if you are sending money regularly then forget bloody western union and moneygram. They charge stupid amounts of money plus mess you around asking for ID and all that.

Set up a savings account with ur bank (without an overdraft facility). Get an ATM card for it and post the card to whoever you are sending money to. Then email them the PIN. Then just put enough money inthe account to cover the amount u want the person to withdraw, plus a bit extra to cover any bank charge. Simple.

The person on the recieving end just needs proper identification...you can also throw in a question if you like for the reciever to answer.....any question. If the reciever does not know the answer the funds are not released.

I would simply plant a "Genuine US Dollar Tree" in the Lady's backyard! Everytime she needs some $$$, all she has to do is give the Tree a Shake and down come the Dollars. No middleman Western Union,,,LOL

gringolondinense nailed it. If you must send via a western union type, use xoom.com.
But I've got a set-up at SkyBank of Indianapolis now. Just open two accounts, then transfer into the second account the amount you want the person in Colombia to have.(You send them an ATM card for the second account.) SkyBank charges no fees, so this way it doesn't cost you anything and you can do it from your computer.

I appreciate all the info. The sending of money to Colombia would be a onetime/rare thing for us to do. This is just to cover some ground work for us as we get nearer to arriving. And my impression is that any computer option is not feasible at this time. I have lots to link into today. Thanks.

1-time deal? Moneygram. The exchange rate is better than WU, but you can verify that on-line. Colombia does charge a .004% tax, and they round down to the nearest 100 pesos.

And Moneygrams can be picked up at Carullas in addition to a bunch of other places in Colombia. If you're just looking for a periodic transfer, I'd go with Moneygram instead of Western Union. One more thing: If the money can doesn't need to be there immediately, Moneygram has (or did have) an option where you can save a few bucks going the 'non-express' route. I think the non-express option is for three business day service.

If i has been really necessary to use a wire service we have used Moneygram with no problems. They have a ton of outlets to pickup the money and you can go to any of them for service.

These services are setup for emergencies and you have to pay for that Thank God they are there for emergencies..If its a normal transaction all the time then you need to rethink your setup..and have a bank with ATM card sent down..
