well behaved kids in colombia

Well, one thing for sure that I've noticed is how well behaved children are in Colombia compared to the US. I've seen families with 4 children all getting along and playing and speaking quietly. This is really refreshing compared to many experiences here in the US.

Parents in the US are overmedicating children and getting them diagnosed with ADD or ADHD or whatever those initials are. And it gets worse, check out the below story on yahoo news.

Here's what happened to American(US) kids! It's the sad truth SCHOOL 1976 vs 2006

Scenario: Jack goes quail hunting before school, pulls into school parking lot with shotgun in gun rack.

1976 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.

2006 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.

1976 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up best friends. Nobody goes to jail, nobody arrested, nobody expelled.

2006 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario: Jeffrey won't be still in class, disrupts other students.

1976 - Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by the Principal. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.

2006 - Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.

1976 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college, and becomes a successful businessman.

2006 - Billy's Dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. State psychologist tells Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their Dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has affair with psychologist.

Scenario: Pedro fails high school English.

1976 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college.

2006 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from 4th of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle, blows up a red ant bed.

1976 - Ants die.

2006 - BATF, Homeland Security, FBI called. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, FBI investigates parents, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Johnny's Dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario: Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.

1976 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.

2006 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

Good one 151 (is your name from the rum?) Though I think Colombia is more than 30 years behind the US, THANK GOD!! That is the best country on the planet (well, at least that i've been to).

Yep... 151 proof. Fortunately, I have learned to leave all that is rated that high alone in the last few years! That shit hurts!

Yeah, thankfully Colombian kids don't have the liberty to sue their parents for putting a belt across their ass! The US is more screwed up than ever with all of the idiot laws and lack of parenting today.

absolutely kids in Colombia and other SA countries are much better behaved than kids in USA. Kids in USA are damn close to being totally out of control.

What a hilarious thread. I could take you into many Colombian homes where the kids behave just the same way they do here. What matters are the parents where ever you are. Of course where would we be without these idiotic PBSH generalizations?

In the local public schools here, all children must address any adult as either Sir or Ma'am and corporal punishment is alive and well. The Yankees think such behavior is terribly old-fashioned and infringes on the rights of the poor children.

Hehehe... There is a big difference indeed... if a child is behaving badly, the response here would be more like: '"Jack, don't do that... stop it... I don't think that's very nice... stop it please... I'm taking your X-Box... I don't want to say it again... I'll count to three...". In Colombia a mother would be more like "Pedro, don't you even DARE make me get out of this chair!" and it stops instantly.

Out of control kids, with no discipline? Whiney little turds, with no respect for anything?

Seems like the UK has more in common with the States than the English language...All that kind of stuff Southern wrote about, goes on every day here too.

And I agree: Colombian kids are considerably more pleasant and polite than their counterparts in the 'First World'. It's one of the nicest things about the place. They put our brats to shame.

Kids I do see older kids wanting to take care of their younger siblings. There's not that seperation or distance here. Even teenage boys playing with babies. People her are also not afraid to be affectionate. Often you see people arm in arm that you don't see in the States. Mothers and sons, sister and sister.........

A quick swat on the butt is often used as an attention getter. "Voy a Pegar" comands a fair ammount of respect too. Kids play better here too. They have all sorts of street games that they play. They're not spoiled with parks, playgrounds...... The other month on a very hot day their was a big riot with the kids in the barrio. It was real ugly. Not one child was spared the attack. I've never seen such a water ballon fight in my life! Even after they ran out of ammo they turned to filling 2 liter bottles of water and chasing each other around. I laughed my ass off and still smile when I think about that day.

You hear a lot of si senor or senora, uniforms for school, door to school is locked once class begins. Kids at my sons school all wear ID cards, parent, teacher, student meetings. Do they still have PTA in the States?

Not to many kids talk back. Mostly for fear of getting smacked. Mine mostly for fear of losing allowance, toys, grounded...

Take my kid to live in the States. NOT! Take my family on vacation to the States. NOT! I can get twice the bang for my buck going somewhere else and also not have to go through all the security screening.

No security screening? The security screening while flying in Colombia far surpasses anything I have experienced in the US, even on Colombian domestic flights.

kids run wild here in BsAs (and even more so in Canada). Yesterday my colombian vistor mentioned she would have smacked the little 5 year old who was tearing around the restaurant yelling (if he was her kid). The parents did ask the kid to stop a few times but he ignored them and they didn't seem to care.

I don't think many Canadians dare say they would smack a kid anymore. in fact I think it's illegal now?

Fear my son will grow up a teen in UK I am really hoping to be away from here before my son starts secondary school. I worked in one for 3 months after coming back to live here from Medellin. Previously I had worked in a High School in Ecuador. Same age kids (14-16) but totally different experience. Found out not allowed to touch students after patting some on the back etc and they turned on me as if I had raped them in public. My students in Ecuador would touch me, kiss me on the cheeks, pat and stroke my belly when I was pregnant and were just lovely, kind, respectful, friendly and open. No bad language at all. After my first day at shool in the UK I sat in the car and cried, vowing never to go back but I needed the money. I also felt so sad that kids had got to be like that and just wished they could have spent a day at my school in Ecuador to see how good life could be. I am adamant my son will not go to secondary school in the UK. I know that it is down to the family but there is a lot f peer pressure here and that is what I fear.

That's because... ... we were slapped and punished for everything. And I thank my parents for that. I remember being punished for not saying "Sí, señora/señor" when I was asked a question. And if we had visit at home and I didn't say hi to them, that would be the end of a happy day for me. I would hear my mom say "Diana Patricia! Venga y salude no sea maleducada!" Boy she was tough!.

well behaving kids in colombia yeah..I think this is beacuase if I am correct, Colombia education includes some courses tht re required called "ettiquecy" and "respect". In america....schools do not teach that concept.

However..colombian parents complain way too much about how bad their kids are....when they really are not bad kids at all. Wait till they have a american raised child and then they'll shut their trap!!

I have seen lots of delinquent kids in the bad parts of town well the social level is the lowest...in BOGOTA, a large police truck picks up these kids out obn thge street past curfew and u see 12 yr olds drinking in public...so it can be worse there too. It all depends.

also colombian parents take respect a little too far...they believe that if you stick up for your rights.....you are talking back..when that is not tlaking back....i had that experince with my parents..but when my brothers got older..that crap was knocked out of their belief system...lol
