Quickly off the top of my head, this is what I can think of.

Advantages of getting married in Colombia:
- She gets to invite all her friends and family to her wedding.
- You can have a great wedding at a fraction of what it would cost in the United States.
- You don't have to worry about the US embassy denying her visa application. I never heard of a spouse being denied although I am sure that it has happened.

Disadvantages of getting married in Colombia:
- You have to go through the paperwork of getting the Colombian visa to marry.
- You have to leave your spouse in Colombia while you return to the United States to start the paperwork. Time for the web cams!
- The waiting time for a spousal visa has increased to about 6 months.

Advantages of getting married in the United States:
- All your family and friends can be there.
- You do not have to separate after you get married.
- The processing time for a K-1 visa is fairly quick depending on the service center which services where you live in the US. It could be as quick as 2 weeks.

Disadvantages of getting married in the United States:
- Unless they have a tourist visa, none of her friends or family are going to be at her wedding. Tourist visas are almost impossible to get for Colombians.
- If there are issues, large age difference, prior K-1 visa applications etc., the fiance visa may be denied at the embassy.

Hola Utopia First of all, I want to compliment and thank you for your HELPFULL input on this board. It's great to hear your comments and then check out Elmo's perspective. The Internet is a wonderful thing, ¿verdad?

Here is my question for you. I have been involved with a colombiana for six months now. I was introduced to her by a colombiana in my city, and through the net we began exchanging messages. I went to Colombia to meet her, and to make a long story short, it was un exito. WOW. I was accepted by her family, and at the end of the visit, we made plans to get together as soon as possible. In short, hay quimica entre nosotros and we are talking about a life together. She could care less about living in the EEUU, but out of respect to my lineage, is open to being able to spend some time here, and the long range plan is to marry and live in Colombia. You mentioned problems getting a visa because of age difference, and that is my question...How do we deal with that? ...Gracias por tu ayuda, Utopiavaquero.

Miquel, unless the age difference is very large, I would not worry about it. The only thing I would recommend in that case is making sure that you go to her interview with her.

my thoughts Get married in Colombia...And whatever someone suggests the amount of booze to purchase, double that..My mother and brother flew down to BAQ and had a fabulous trip. My mother is blue eyed and blond haired and speaks no Spanish, but she had the best time. And my brother, really did not see him to much because he was busy in Barranquilla on 74th street dancing and drinking...But, in reality, I do believe that the wedding is for the womans family..So, I suggest a wedding in Colombia..

Gracias UtopiaVaquero The difference by US standards is a little bit big, but by the standards I have experienced in Latin America is not. Believe me, if it is a potential problem, I will be right next to her en vivo. Thanks, amigo.
