He thought his port-a-potty scam would leave him flush with cash. Instead, it got him thrown in the can.

An accountant for Tishman Construction will be indisposed in prison for the next seven years after pleading guilty yesterday to embezzling $2.8 million.

He altered checks payable to Mr. John, a company that deals in portable bathrooms, and made them payable to himself - Mr. John Hoeffner.

Hoeffner, 47, of Beechhurst, Queens, pleaded guilty to grand larceny in Manhattan Supreme Court. Prosecutors said he began stealing from Tishman in 2006 while on probation for embezzling $371,000 from Bovis Lend Lease, another of the city's major construction firms.

Hoeffner was Tishman's accountant on a multimillion-dollar dormitory project at Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine, handling invoices from subcontractors and vendors and preparing payment checks to be signed by managers.

As with many construction projects, one of the more vital vendors was the port-a-potty provider. Hoeffner created eight bogus checks made out to Mr. John, got his bosses to sign them, added his last name and then cashed them himself.

Prosecutors said the suddenly-wealthy Hoeffner then blew hundreds of thousands of dollars on a girlfriend in Cali, Colombia.
