Warning....attending carnaval in Colombia can seriously damage your health, your camera, your clothes. etc

after experiencing notting hill, a bit of rio, panama city celebrations and the los diablos festival I decided to get a few snaps of my experience of a colombian carnaval in santa marta and thought i would be ready.....whats it all about this throwing flour and sawdust and stuff, it cant be solely down to the fact i was wearing an argentina football jersey or is it exclusive to the carribean coast this type of after celebrations craziness...

Several of my friends in Barranquilla stay away from a lot of Carnaval activities because of the flour throwing. Like it or not, it's part of the tradition.

It wasn't too bad when I was in the Barranquilla carnaval - one of the biggest in the country. Had lots of fun. Kept the camera lens covered - ja ja ja.

yep this was santa marta feb 2007....

kder, i wore that top a few times cos it helped with people speaking spanish to me first instead of english in places in central and latin america, with a sun tan and long hair i was trying to say no entiendo ingles papi , to have conversations in castellano, it was a psychological thing, i know english people generally have a bee in their bonnet about argentina.

Wouldn't Carnaval be the same time everywhere? It's related to Lent, which establishes its timing.

it was not, but I was not aware about the sawdust - that's why I ask - i remember eggs, water, flower - which are totally harmless - now sawdust or dirt in your eyes - yeah, that's probably bad for your eye health!

I wondered if anyone would post about this quite common custom (part of the culture?). Then again,, maybe they have?

This is a new years day event in the Rural areas and attended by huge crowds. One exception is the revelers are all young and riding motos.

Lots of water and flour.
