Gotta ask Not trying to make enemies here, I'm an ex-jarhead myself, but how are you asking how much to live in Medellin and in another post saying you have a house for sale in Medellin?

Anyway, I've been putting the budget together myself as I am moving to the land of milk and honey in December. A lot of posts on this site with budget info. It depends on how high your expectations of living well are. I'm looking at between $1400 and $1800 for my interpretation of the good life. Fixed costs from my estimates(rent, internet, cell phone, utilities, taxis and el metro, food, and a bit for miscellaneous) usually comes out to about $950. Add in another $500-$600 for entertainment and dating and I think you'd be fairly close.

In defense of Paisas. Although I have a weakness for hookers and do indulge myself on occasion, I have dated a Paisa for over 2 years now. And I tell her no lies about my fidelity.

She is a social worker who supports 5 kids and her grandmother. She very rarely asks me for anything other than my presence. Her idea of a good time is whatever makes me happy. And she wants more sex than I do. If I wanted to marry, she would be my first choice. But she knows that I have no intention of marrying.

I have known a lot of Paisa, Colombiana, and Gringa golddiggers. They aren't all like that.

When in Rome ! It is all relative on where and how you party. I have been partying all over Colombia for the last 2 years. Relatively every 4-5 months staying in Colombia and back to Austin. I bought my place in Poblado and Laureles 3 years ago with a fraternity buddy of mine. I am impulsive like that. But, if you don't pull the trigger - you would miss a lot of opportunity, not just in Colombia, but in the U.S. altogether. That is another story all by itself. I would make my permanent move to Medalo in February. Let us just say I am taking a sabbatical for 2 years.
If you take them to Lleras, Clubs and other Restaurants in Calle 10-10a in Poblado, Las Palmas, every other freaking night, get ready to spend as you are training the legions of wanna be Natalia Paris that you are not afraid to let go of your mighty Dolares. The true beauty of Colombia and not just Medellin, is being able to venture out to what I call day to day living. Just sit back one of these days in any given park, centro commercial, local clubs in 70, La Ochenta, 33, San Juan, La Doctora in Sabaneta/Parque Sabaneta. If your Spanish is good enough - you can even venture out to Buenos Aires, Prado Centro, Villa Hermosa, Boston - and really have a lot of fun for the cheap. You will see hordes of young beautiful women with so-so guys. The fact of the matter is this guys know how to play the game and you should adapt with your environments. Control the situation, and take them to places that you and your company can enjoy meals, drinks and the company of other Rumberas for cheap. There are meals that you can get for $5k pesos each, $800 pesos for cervesas, $2500 for a litre of Chilean wine or Argentine wine. You can buy everyone drinks all around and not break the bank. As much as I love reading Elmos comments - which I love he can attest to going to Ave Murillo in Baq and do the same thing, and not hang out in Baranquilla del Norte and pay American Prices. Same strategy I employ in Austin. It is a college town with a lot of opportunities. I am 32, but I can still pass for 19-20 yr old. So, it does help for meeting the local talent. Hey, it is your money and you can do whatever you want. You can really have a lot of fun with US $600-($1200month-really high end). The average rent for a 2-3 bedroom place in Strata 4-6 is ranging between $550k to ($1.5 million pesos high end) With those prices you can get by with US.$239-$650 high end. Even if you stay in the high end places, you can get a room mate and sub-lease the other bedrooms. If you are a foreigner - good luck - as the mother fu__ers in the Propiedad Raiz will show you great apartments - that you won't qualify for. You will need co-signers with property and a great paying job to co-sign for you. If you are Joe Blow coming in, you probably won't know anyone - Like I said good luck. There are ways around it - I've learned and compiling information for my book. I got so pissed off, that I just bought a property. A lot easier, with a lot less hassle.

now just a minute elmo and sr med.... my wife is 105% paisa, and i can count on one hand, all the times she has ever asked me for money, and still have fingers left over, and this is over a period of over 5 years now. matter of fact, she gets very embarrassed to ask me for money, and a couple of times that attitude cost her healthwise, because she didn't want to tell me she was sick, because she didn't want me to worry, and she was embarrassed to ask me for money for doctor visits and medicine. now i may have wound up with the genuine, down to earth paisa, and not some high maintenance parakeet, that can't pass up a mirror without primping and preening, constantly asking for money for the latest trinket that will keep her happy for the moment, or as ron white's suggestion for debeers, diamonds, that will shut her up, for a minute.

Hey Famsearch Elmo is just being Elmo and Sr. Med is just warning. My wife is also 105% Paisa. She is never has asked me for money and even when I try to get her to take some money for things we need around the house she takes less and gives the rest back to me. She works in the USA for about $7 a hour. Not because we have to as I do very well but because she wants to make money to help out. I keep telling her to just go to school and study but that does not work. She wants to help me with the bills. Now the tiny amount of money she makes I refuse to take and then she saves up to buy things for us (not her). She is amazing and I love her so much. HOWEVER I also have a lot of Colombian friends that have gotten involved with a bad Paisa. Their stories are pretty scary. So like anywhere there are good and bad. However it does seem that I have met my fair share of Paisas that are great actresses and great manipulators. So you do have to be careful. I have seen some guys get dragged through the mud.

My two cents This year I had my first experience with one of those Black Holes...and I'm not talking about a nympho here... I'm talking about those who want the most expensive item at the most expensive restaurant, the most expensive jeans at the most expensive store, the most expensive drink at the most expensive club, those that look at you like you tried to kill their mother just because you suggested a mid-priced restaurant or club, those who have the nerve to ask you for weekly or monthly gifts just because "you love me, don't you?" and then you start inquiring about their family, where they live and you find out that... this ho comes from a low class neighborhood and suddenly anything below Parque Lleras is not good enough?
There's a very appropriate name for those in Colombia, it's time you guys start learning that term

No PBSH poster worth his or her salt lets that stop them. Knowing what you're talking about is strictly optional.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Grillas That's what my Paisa calls them. She knows that I have a weakness for them. Me encantan las grillas. They get what they want and I get what I want. What could be more honest and fulfilling? Of course it is always a very good idea to negotiate the price first.

Hey tom, how about more pictures of your grillas. I too have a fondness for grilla girls.
Last time in Quilla they tried to hook me up with this university broad, she was studying leyes. First, she showed up dressed from head to toe and then spent most of the time talking about her cases. WTF, never mind all that lawyer lingo crap, show me what you got. When I meet a broad for the first time I gotta see some tetas and ass first to see if she’s worth the meal and drinks she’s gonna shove down her throat on my dime. Secondly, she’s gotta put out the first date or else no call back.
Grillas are cool, they show the merchandize and then they put out, thus you don’t feel like a jerk.

Caranga A Caranga is a tiny insect that lives in mud, when peasants walk barefoot that little insect bores a tunnel up their feet or toes and then it's difficult to remove, it's somehow related to lice.

People call Carangas those people who come from very low class areas and pretend that they have the highest taste in everything. It's different from people who work hard to make a living and eventually can afford a better life, the "caranga" is someone who's rather a bloodsucker, they try to find someone with money to get the "lifestyle I deserve". They put on airs and usually treat people badly, specially those who come from the same area. Nothing's good enough for them, they demand always the most expensive stuff wherever they are and tend to complain about everything. They seem to think that they "deserve" everything in life, but of course they don't give much in return.

"Resuscitada" means resuscitated, but people can call them just "caranga".
