Vonage in Bogota?

I've been here for a couple of months now and I can definitely say I love it. The one exception is my latin looking GF, who also bears a latin name, but speaks absolutely NO SPANISH, is still living in the states (she's planning on coming over for a couple of months during the summer). Calling her is a pain in the ass, my ETB bill almost knocked me off my feet and I'm using up all my Movistar minutes in about 2 days... Yeah, in spite of the local stunners you could pretty much say I've been juicioso.

Soooo, after the superfluous introduction comes the question. Would it be smart to have her get a vonage account in the states? In other words, would I be able to use it in Bogota? I currently have ETB's 200k DSL and it does okay with video and audio streaming. Are there any additional issues I should consider? Does connecting from a Colombian server modify anything in the service?

I'd love to know whether anyone has been able to use this or any other VOIP service while in Bogota.

Thanks in advance for all the helpful tips.

I know several users of Vonage in Bogotá with the ETB I help them set up when they got trouble with the ETB modems and their locked configuration. There is another provider I work with, it will give you a USA number and all incoming calls will be free, outgoing calls will be aroun 0.003 USD cents, or $69 pesos per minute.

To keep the USA number you have to pay 8 USD monthly.
If you just want to do outbound calls you can get prepaid cards to call any landline or mobile phone, anywhere in the world.

Try Skype Instead You should try Skype instead. If your not familiar, it's a free VIOP software that enables you to talk to someone through your computer. All you need is a computor, speakers, microphone, & an internet connection. All the calls are free and you can also chat as well, although I can't figure out why you would type so much to chat if you can talk to the person directly. The quality is pretty good and again... it's free.

We use it to talk to my wife's family in Colombia all the time!

Vonage Vonagi works in Colombia (I know it works with EPM Banda Ancha en Medellin) Vonage only requires 90k to work properly and the total costs is about 26Dlls a month. you can get your GF to get a vonage account in the states and get the travel phone adaptor, it will be sent to her already programmed by Vonage and set up to be a travel adapter meaning you can use it anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection.

Skype just announced about a week ago that all calls made to the US will be free, I use Skype sometimes and I don't get charged when calling to US numbers.

I agree with JohnAH , SKYPE is the best sollution, thats what i use...its computer to computer talk or of you want to call land lines you can purchase a 10 dollar credit and talk like 3 hours (i think even more) ..anyways if you have any question about it.. you know you can just give me a call...
