I'm an experienced teacher looking to move to Cartagena from the UK where I am now living. I want to find and work with/for an organisation that works with poor children and families.
Obviously paid work would be ideal but if there are voluntary organisations that are about, I'd certainly consider them. I figure I can always teach a little English to get by while i gave my time to an organisation.
Does anyone know of such organisations in or near Cartagena?

Roncita says on Aug 24, 2004, 07:51: voluntary work in Colombia I don't know of any in Cartagena as I only went there on holidays, but I know of a charity in Medellin that rehabilitates street children, especially those addicted to glue. It's called Brazos Abiertos - run by an American missionary. There's also an NGO called Vamos Mujer that looks after women (and their children) who've been displaced by the war. But they are in Medellin, not Cartagena. Or check out Children of the Andes (www.children-of-the-andes.org) - a charity based in London for street children in Colombia; they may be able to help you.

Roncita says on Aug 24, 2004, 09:33: Yes - it's very depressing - don't know how well you know Colombian cities but if you go to the city centres and you see kids hanging around on street corners etc many times they will be sniffing glue - usually discreetly, under their clothes. It relieves their hunger apparently.
