Volcanic Eruption In Colombia

Over Next 72 Hours 'High Probability'
by Mitch Marconi
Nov 12, 2005

The Galeras volcano could have an eruption at any moment according to Julian Villaruel, director of the Colombian Institute of Geology and Mines.
The spokesman for the Volcanoes and Seismologic Observatory of Pasto [1], Colombia, explained that the Galeras volcano has registered a level two activity in a scale of 1 to 4, which means that an eruption is likely to happen in days or weeks.

Villaruel indicated that while it is nearly impossible to predict the exact time of an eruption, "the probability is high" due to the information available.

Scientific organizations in the US have confirmed the probability and that some measurements in the Galeras "have been guaranteed." to produce this phenomenon.

The observatory and the local committee for the prevention and reduction of disasters (CREPAD) will reportedly continue to keep a watchful eye on the behavior of the volcano in order to instruct the residents about the risks and the evacuation routes in case of eruption and or pre-emptive evacuation.

The Galeras summit is 4276 meters above sea level. The last time it registered some activity was was in 2004. Pasto, at its base, is a city of about 400 thousand residents.

There are 5 other towns around the Galeras vicinity. 60.000 people live around the influence zone and about 9000 live in the area of highest risk, according to published reports.

media hype If you have ever been to the Pacific Northwest then you will know how often new eruptions of Mt. St.Helens or even Mt.Rainier are predicted. In the aftermath of the hurricanes WA news makers were full of comparisons and predictions ... according to them Seattle will vanish in a mix of earthquakes, volcanos, tsunamis, and hurricanes any day now.

My Cali friend has been telling me about the eruptions since I know her, but I agree, it seems that this current activity has a high chance of becoming real.

The goverement has orderered an evacuation of the regions in higher risk, but people are refusing to evecuate... it happenend all last week...Nobody believes the volcano is going to erupt because it has always been the same... it has made noise but nothing has happened. It`s the old Peter and the wolf....

The goverment has alocated funds to be given for housing to each family that has to evecuate. something like 100,000 pesos a month... (?)

It would be better if your girlfriend takes the necessary precautions...

Disaster in the making This volcano is going to blow and alot of people are going to die.

I wonder how much blame they can place on the government,

This is the problem when a government is trying to make a society proactive...cry wolf syndrome.

people will never learn.

I mean That unless this thing blows now...people will ignore what's going to happen. People have to learn the hard way.

This government is trying to get ahead of this thing and people are just blowing it off. What good is your farm if you're dead.

March 2006 Recent activity March 2006 bulletin

Talked with my GF yesterday. Colombian T.V. news said there are some leaving the Pasto area. Ha,, asked how they are leaving she said, on foot, carts, donkeys and trucks.

Wrong question. :)

She always was an alarmist.

Suppose the coffee region of Narino has more problems than guerillas. Gosh, I hope the other coffee regions aren't in trouble.

Not to worry,,, much My GF is truly an alarmist. She gets excited about rumors, gossip, hearsay or any unfounded and unsubstantiated report she hears, or THINKS she hears and facts are exaggerated. She believes in ghosts, haunted houses, witchcraft etc. She has the house,, “smoked”,, you got to see this,, old women boil “stuff” on the stove and walk through the house chanting and waving the smoking kettle. I kid you not. Tales of Crypt would be taken seriously.

However, there seems to be some type of evacuation around Pasto,, she usually doesn’t comment on the news but I guess there is some factual truth to the problem.

Honestly she will probably sleep under the bed to keep safe from falling objects.

Coffee growing regions I do believe Armenia in the department of Quindio is the most well known,, but it is TINY. Quindio is only 1/30 or less than the size of Antioquia.

Valle Del Cauca isn’t mentioned in the linked article,, but there are coffee plantations at the correct elevation, large numbers of people where I live, “sort and grade” coffee beans, part time work for those who want a few extra pesos. The street will be full of beans lying in the sun on tarps. The territory has large numbers of coffee bean roasting factories.

Colombia is a diverse group of coffee origins, with Northern and Southern regions staggered in the crop cycle. All told, we have come light years ahead in the last 5 years, offering micro-regional selections from small-holder coffee producing groups, and abandoning the senseless Supremo-Excelso size based grade system. Part of the current crop quality is this: we can wait for the good coffee, not just go out and buy Colombia when we need it. That's the whole way we operate anyway; we wait for the peak of the harvest. And if you cup a lot of these micro-regional lots, in particular the northern Bucaramangas, the South Huilas, the Cauca coffees and Narino, there is always a point where all factors converge, and the cup becomes exemplary.

Coffee is also grown in Cundinamarca,, GIB should know where that is,, might not be able to spell it,, but he knows the location.

No activity ? Calm before the storm? The part about volcanic rocks, at 500 degrees and 300 kilometers per hour.... NOW, THAT WOULD GET MY ATTENTION.

Yep,, so they think the cone is plugged and might result in an explosion? I’d hope this explosion is to the side or at least away from populated areas. Nice thing about Colombia is they do get the equipment and experts from all over the world to help monitor the situation. See there K62,, my compassion level is up,, but it’s early.

My GF just called me from Armenia and wanted to know how much “bamboo” (small guadua) she should purchase for some curtains she was making. I thought it better to not ask how she got the courage to go to there during volcanic activity.

She did say the cost per minute from Armenia to the U.S. was 200 pesos,, VERY CHEAP,, this is so unbelievable I think an email is required. A year ago you had to LOOK to find a charge of 1,000 pesos per minute. Things are getting better, survive the explosion and you can afford to call and talk about it.
