PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post

visiting the beaver palace..

Some of the bars in colombia make the movie coyote ugly look pretty tame.Back in aug /06 i had occation to visit one in Barranquilla. My wife to be was having a staget party ..ladys only , and a few friends ive come to know in BQ decided we should do a little party time as well.
We ended up in this bar witch had about 40 very hot ladys parading around in g-strings ...pantys..and nightys...i think the guys thought that bieng i was soon to be married mabee i should get a little last minite moo shoo..
in any event i passed on it as ive got a good lady and felt she deserved better than that. I did happen to notice however that manny of these ladys seemed to know my (married)colombian friends quite well...Go figure! The only down side to the night was when the policio showed up(8 of them)and patted everyone down and asked for i.d.
I gave them my saskatchewan fishing licence and i geuss as it said Canada they were okay with that.
Has anyone had any experience with other zany watering holes in colombia?...just curious

I once drank until dawn in a puteria in Cali. It was a warren of a place. It had drunks sleeping in the toilets, on the tables, on the floors. There were dogs running around. They were frying up empanadas in a backroom. The jovial barman had a submachine gun behind the bar. It was surreal. I remember staggering out of there in the early morning, reeling at the sunlight like Dracula.

my first night in bogotá I was alone, hardly spoke a word of spanish, and had no idea where to go or what to do. I think it was a Tuesday, not much going on.

After having a few drinks I caught a cab to go to back to my hotel, and he asked me if I wanted to go to a "nightcloob", and I thought, why not, Ã?'m not tired, I should explore, a disco isn't my thing but what the hell.

He took me to some hellish barrio, and on the way I was sure I was at very least going to get robbed, maybe worse. I had no idea where I was (still don't).

We get out of the cab (he decides to join me for a drink) and we walk through some trash on the street to a big metal door, knock and some guy lets us in.

We sit down and I notice we are the only 2 guys in the place. There are about 10 to 15 girls standing around staring at me. I realized pretty quickly what kind of place it was.

The doorman asks which girl I want. I stammer something like 'I just want to look', which confuses him and the taxi driver. They discuss it for a while then the doorman starts yammering at the girls to all line up, and they get in a long line and one by one walk up to my table and introduce themselves.

I don't know who was more embarrased, the girls or me. I guess they thought this was my idea of 'taking a look'.

I quickly downed my drink while everyone stared at me waiting for me to make a choice. It was not easy to explain I really was not interested and just wanted to go back to my hotel. I had to assure everyone that the girls really were not ugly (they were), but that there had been a misunderstanding.

Now I know what a nightclub means when you are in colombia. It ain't no disco.

podborski says on May 18, 2007, 09:39:

nope just have no need to pay for ugly women.

And if you need to pay for it in colombia you are either doing something very wrong or else you are 'paying them to leave' as the saying goes.

There are a lot better looking women outside of those places than in them, IMHO. I still prefer to pay indirectly, I like playing the games.

But then I haven't been to the famous Piscina, so maybe I'm missing out on something?

Strangely enough, the women in these kinds of clubs in Buenos Aires are astonishingly beautiful. They also put on great shows, they actually have strip shows and other acts, often tango or something like that.

Pod if the guy took you to some "hellish barrio" then he definately wasn't taking you to the "good" strip clubs in Bogota. There are probably a dozen of those in and around the Zona Rosa.

podborski says on May 19, 2007, 06:20:

honestly, I know a couple of those places near zona rosa. Touts drag me in now and again but I walk right back out. They just don't seem to have any decent looking women, they aren't really strip clubs (at least I've never seen any kind of 'show'), they tend to be a bit dingy.

Maybe it's because I have only gone at 1 or 2 AM?

Anyway, it seems to me the clubs here in BsAs are amazing but it's hard to meet a girl in a bar, for example, and it's the exact opposite in Bogotá.

podborski says on May 19, 2007, 06:27:

speaking of coyote ugly bars I have never really found a wild bar in Bogotá either. Lots of places where everyone dances and gets very drunk (kukuramakara, el sitio, andres), but nothing wild going on.

I even went to the primer de mayo (?) area once. It was crowded, loud and lots going on, but I have seen wilder bars in Tokyo.

Do you need to go to baranquilla to find these places, or am I just clueless? (probably the latter, I know. But if anyone knows of some places to go, let me know)

Yeah, here we go, I remember seeing these on flickr and that they were taken at a bar in Bogota--maybe you need to check out the goth scene? LOL

I think I'd get in trouble if I posted the photos, so I'm just going to put the links in and hope that's ok:

yeah, so I'd say that pretty much clears it up it isn't that Bogotá doesn't have wild bars, I'm just clueless. I figured as much.

Now we just have to find out where that bar is huh andrew?

Well, my Spanish is still shit, relatively speaking (I'm working on it, I really am), but from what I can tell in the comments for the first picture the name of the place is "Abnocto".

comments? what comments? jaja, I didn't see any comments, but I have heard or read about Abnocto bar somewhere.

If I recall it is actually some other bar that one night a week (Thursday?) they put on a show, like the ones in the photos.

I think if you bought that little plan b booklet (like Time Out) in Bogotá you'd probably find out more about it.

podborski I've this romantic image of BA being full of beautiful, elegant, Italian looking women. Any truth in this notion?

podborski says on May 20, 2007, 08:37:

ummm, SOME truth to it kalder Depends where you go. Right now I am in a popular café (Volta) and it is full of well dressed, elegant, italian looking women of all ages.

At least one looks like she is on her way to a photo shoot.

This is in one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in the city.

But there are also the usual gaggle of 40,50 and 60 somethings that are wearing way too much makeup and super tight jeans that might have suited them 25 years ago, maybe. So elegant just isn't a word I would use to describe them. (I am very critical though!)

Sometimes you can sit and watch an endless parade of gorgeous young women go by, but you don't see that many (gorgeous, elegant) older ones, not like I am used to in Paris or Florence.

I would say they just don't seem to have quite the sense of style that the french and italians have. Huge generalization and lots of exceptions, but in general, this isn't Paris (I don't know Rome).

But it's still pretty damn good and a whole lot cheaper!

(Just as I was about to hit the 'post comment' button a very elegant, attractive woman about 50 walked by, so they are here, just not as common as you might expect).

Thanks for getting back to me. Sounds like you're having a good time (as usual).

BTW: Rome can put Cali in the shade when it comes to attractive women.

Yeah, but how well do they take to Americans? If the attitude there towards us Yanks is anything like what it is in the rest of Europe at the moment, in general, I'm not sure you'd be doing much more than wasting your time...
