Visiting a Foreign City: Tourist Suggestions

I have an opportunity to visit a foreign city in June I have never been to (other than a short layover at JFK airport). From reading posts from people here on PBH who actually live there, it seems like a very dangerous place to live or visit. I have read that the police there are corrupt and like to shoot and beat down its citizens and immigrants. Seems to happen almost everyday, according to the impression I get from reading the posts. Crime is rampant and almost unstoppable. I have read about shootings, muggings, assault/battery, pickpockets, perverts, child molesters, sexual assaults, terrorist attacks, buildings getting bombed, old ladies robbed, and the like. Sounds like a true 3rd World country in South America almost. I guess for those who live there it is business as usually every day. But for a tourist, it kind of makes a visitor select another destination much safer. I mean, I just want to visit the place, but I don’t want to get killed/mugged/punked/shot/shanked/molested/or forced to watch I Love Lucy reruns either, ya know. Is it really safe there????? Or, should I go to Colombia instead, where I have been many times, and survived each trip…?

Oh, the Foreign City????............New York City, of course! =P

i just dont get it i HAVE LIVED ALL MY LIFE IN COLOMBIA and i have never faced those EVENTS you just mention.

Let me tell you that a bad comment can be taken as a common way of life in here, but the fact is we are solving our problems.

Colombia its a great country but if you think that is not a good destination to come, then save your opinions 'cause we want people that help us to erase that kidn of publicity and elevate our spirits.

Don't worry, if you ever come to New York, you'll have Modefoque, Rubito, Rocinate and me to watch your back. We can all get drunk at "Wakamba" bar on 38th and 8th. The Colombiana bartenders love us there. Then theres the best Colombian restaurant in NYC, "Listo El Pollo" that can't be missed.

$50 bill? Why, what do you have planned? The only contact I really have with police is when they pull me over in my car for some bullshit traffic violation. They got me for tinted windows the other week. Shockingly, I did'nt get a ticket.

Every driver from NY that i have ever pulled over tried to bribe me with a $50 bill when he handed his license over to me....(3 in total)....took me by surprise at first, then the driver explained it to me..told him not to do that here in CA as its a felony....they figured it was the same all over the US....=)...he went on his merry way.....

Just my opinion...

Things usually happen in three's...lol

I think the percentage of NYPD cops that would take a $50 bribe is very small. I never tried bribing a public official. Not even in third world countries. I don't believe in it. People should have more integrity.
