Visa stamp question (90 day stamp)

The last time I was in Colombia I came in through Letica via boat from Peru. I asked the customs agent for the 90 stamp and he gave it to me. When I made it to Santa Marta I met some other Americans and they acted really surprised that I got a 90 stamp. They said they asked for 90 days and only got 30 days. Is there any trick to getting the longer stamp? It's kinda irritating when your making plans and you don't know in Advance how long your visa stamp will be. This time I'm flying in though Barranquilla. I would really like to get the 90 day stamp again and not have the hassle of going to DAS (by the way is it a big hassle it kinda sounds like it). Any suggestions about making sure you get the 90 day stamp? Discuss....

the default seems to be 60 days. To go to DAS in Medellin wasn't that much of a drama but I had my Colombiana doing the talking since my Spanish is a little ordinary

Expect Sixty have a good story and get Ninety. DAS is really no problem as long as you don't act like an Ugly American.

What happens if you want to stay longer. Like up to 6 months. Just go back to DAS. Now I understand that you can only stay 6 months out of a yr. Is that correct? Can you go to a border country. Venezuela/Ecuador and come back in for another 6 months. Or is it by the calendar year? Thanks

Its down to luck mostly, it depends on what the person wants to give you, being polite and friendly won't do you any harm.

When you get a visa extension it can be extended to 120 days and costs the same if you started with a 30 day stamp as it does for a 90 day stamp

Yeah..I just know I'm not going to be over 90 days. I just don't want to deal with the hassel of a new stamp if I don't have too. Just easier is all..thanks though.
