video from Leticia, Amazonas

A quickie video I did to accompany my wife's thesis project that she did while we lived in Leticia - what a blast. It was shot in Leticia, Tabatinga, Puerto Nariño; the indigenous are Ticunas, Yaguas and Huitotos; some of the interesting "wildlife" were found in the house we were living in (only one on the military base without screens on the windows!); most of the shots that aren't of the open river, as in if you see vegetation or houses, were dried up when we got there and under several feet of water when I shot this; I'm the pasty white guy, wife's in the canoe with us and the semi-pasty white little girl that appears twice is our daughter.

Great place to go, enjoy (hopefully):

Thanks all, the spider kept ending up in our bathroom (never leave a wet mop around), the jaguar's buddy came after me (noone else told me there was a second one in the cage, I just got pushed), and I had to go into the anaconda cage for those shots too. Some was part of a job I did for the national university there, most was home video.

Sounds like a great trip he did kat1, we didn't get to do that, but hope to at one point. Furthest we got was Puerto Nariño (dolphins).

Adrimm, November from what I remember should be a bit of a dry month. There's still plenty of canoeing though, and the good thing is that you can walk to a lot more places. Remember, walk the main street toward the airport. Left at the gas station (maybe abandoned by now) one block until you can't walk anymore. You'll be next to part of the military base. Smack dab in front of you should be a path, yes, that crappy little path. You take that and it goes upriver passing several indigenous communities. Depending the time of day you may see monkeys, iguanas and dolphins. You could technically walk all the way to Puerto Nariño from there if you want (I didn't, and it is really long I imagine).

I also believe that November should be Poma Rosa season. They are everyfreakingwhere (yet tourists still buy them in the market). Streets are pink all over, like the pink flower in the video-that you can eat too.

Oh, and by then the zoo should be opened. It was closed when I was there, but got in due to the filming. - have fun!

jaguars don't eat humans ! In Brazil they are reaching seriuosly low numbers because of cull by rancheros who claim they eat up to 1000 sheep/yr per jaguar. They are amazing animals and worth going to Leticia to see

bufalo says on Jul 18, 2007, 13:39:

wow, 1000 sheep/yr per jaguar? I can't see them eating 3 a day (ok, get it that's the inflated excuse to kill them). I just got pushed a bit, not even a scratch. The only ones in Leticia that I saw were in the zoo, but I wanted to walk to Tarapacá, supposedly on the trail you might run into one...

I'll take you up on that offer real soon! I may have a short coming up that I'm filming here and it's about 75% music.

bufalo says on Jul 23, 2007, 08:40:

no, we didn't get any vaccines. However, if you want to go deeper into Brazil, a US citizen needs to get a 100 dollar visa, and a colombian needs to get a Yellow Fever vaccine. Why do the colombians need it? because colombia has some of the Amazon in its territory (but doesn't Brazil have most???) Anyway, while there in Leticia, Tabatinga, Peru and such, you don't need any vaccines nor visas. Just if you go WAY up or down river.
